: MediaTakeOut.com has learned that Beyonce and Kelly Rowland have generously contributed millions of dollars towards developing affordable housing in Houston. Here's an excerpt from a press release that Beyonce's camp is sending around.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, efforts began to construct Phase I of the $4 million "Knowles-Rowland Temenos Place Apartments." Last month Temenos CDC received the final funding needed for construction. The housing development is the result of a collaboration with House of Deréon founders Tina Knowles and Beyonce Knowles, Survivor Foundation, Inc., the City of Houston, and St. John's Downtown (Church Home of the Knowles Family).The project is a 43 unit, single room occupancy supportive housing facility for at-risk populations designed to provide permanent living accommodations for women and men who are taking significant steps in improving their lives after the traumatic effects of personal and natural disasters.
The apartments will provide "a safe place to live" for all residents. Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, Solange, Mathew and Tina Knowles have pledged 1 million dollars to the "Knowles-Rowland Temenos Place Apartments" project. Wal-Mart and American Express are major contributors to Temenos CDC and the Survivor Foundation's overall initiatives. Giorgo Armani and Loreal have also made commitments to support this project.
Thanks to a generous donation from Kelly Rowland and Beyoncé Knowles, located on the same block as the "Knowles-Rowland Temenos Place Apartments," is a 1.2 million Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth which is an exciting, multipurpose recreational complex for youth and a youth HIV education and risk reduction program called "Breaking The Silence."
This isn't getting a whole lotta news attention. But we bet the media will be right there when the first person gets shot in front of Beyonce's projects...
Well, that's good that they did this....unfortunately, I'd say within the next 5-10 years, this "project" will become like all the other projects across America....rat infested, drug infested, too many dumb baby momma's allowing their baby daddy to freeload, while he brings over his other woman while she's at work, etc. Will Beyonce and Kelly want recognition as having build this project then? I wonder. A better idea would have been to create a *** home with STRINGENT rules to insure that violence, drugs, etc. will stay out, but if this is open-door for anybody...beware. I'm glad to see they are doing something to "give back" to the community..especially to those who REALLY need it. You see so much negative press and nonsense news about celebrities, this is DEFINITELY A GOOD THING. Why haven't we heard about this in other media forums!!! If they were partyin' hard, we definitely would have heard about that!

"Too little, too late"...there is no such thing "Why does her name have to be on it"...Who cares?? They call the projects I work near the pork and Beans, for christs sake! "Why are they single housing units"...Obviously there is a need for them or i doubt they would have built them as such. Beyonce is one person and she can't right all the wrongs in the world but this is a huge step in the right direction. She didn't have to do any of this. Um actually I have never bought any brand name label unless you call the gap name brand! I am not a child and therefore I do not equate my self worth with a label! I may not have a lot of money, but I do give my 10% every week, and I always volunteer my time, I have been delivering meals for Meals on Wheels once a week for the past 6 years, so please don't tell me I don't do things for my community. If I had more money I would be doing a lot more. If I had endless supplies of money like Beyonce, Id do far more than what she has done. I def. would not have a 14 bedroom mansion and a 100+ thousand dollar car! It looks like a very nice building and dignified and respectable looking housing that people could take pride in.
Maybe if public housing looked comparable to private owned apartments people would take a little more pride in its upkeep.
And they should encourage its upkeep and if you cant at least keep the building clean then the tenants should be removed. ITs time for some tough love in our black family. Time to stop being apologists.
Beyonce don't owe people ***. Its nice someone wants to put some of your broke azzes into somewhere decent that probably don't have rodents and roaches in it (atleast until you move your *** into there, then they'll come too, like always). Be grateful that someone is thinking about your *** ***'en azzz. My only concern is why put the housing into the hood knowing *** well that it will just spiral downhill in terms of conditions. Put it on the outskirts of the city where people kids can get a chance at good suburban educations, safe neighborhoods, less crime infested. Take people out of the ghetto and that will be the best thing you can do for a person that doesn't know life exist outside of their comfort zone.
Black people are the only group in this country always talking about somebody "need" to do more for their community. Successful black people choose their causes and the organizations they want to support, just like you choose whether or not youre going to give the *** a dollar or not. Wouldnt it be great if we built our own community, stop having kids out of wedlock (which almost guarantees low income status), get degrees, and build our own communities. yea its great if people who have already achieved weath contribute but what does it mean if as a whole our people cant create and pass down wealth if we always waiting for someone else to help...?

But I lost my patience a year or so afterward. I'm normally not rude, and value my job, love getting my paycheck, but I just had to tell this guy off one ***. He called upset because they wouldn't give him any more assistance, talking about what people NEED to and SHOULD give him. And had the nerve to have a nasty attitude. They had already provided him a temporary home for two years, some get started money, the bus passes right through the Fema park, so all that's left for him to do was get a damned job. He NEED the Red Cross/Fema to give him more money to make it through since he lost everything, and has 3 kids to take care of. My reply to him: You should be responsible for you and yours. If you had been handling your biz correctly before the storm, you would have had adequate money in the bank to ensure your own family's survival in the event of an emergency. It's not up to the world to give you anything, you go out and make your own way, and take care of you and yours. Not wait on anyone else to do it for you. And waiting on handouts. And when you get them, you're unappreciative. It was a blessing to be able to eat and have a dry place to live, and now you're mad because people won't do more? That's the reason some people don't share the wealth in the first place. It won't matter because no one will appreciate it, certainly not your own people. I can guarantee you that if something bad happens at the project Beyonce helped build, it will all fall on her because she is prominent. Never mind the fact that many other people donated to that cause, like Wal Mart, Amex or Armani. She will be made the focus of it, because some of us suffer from the crab in a bucket syndrome.

Do you live in Houston? You can't...not thinking that downtown is (as you said) a sh!thole. Or perhaps you haven't been downtown lately...it has changed. And another thing (which really lets me know you aren't here in the H) they placed most Katrina victims on the Southwest part of town and on the North side. Also,if you did live here, you would know that there is other things that the Knowles family has done. I'm not trying to call you out, but I just like for people to be well informed.
nowadays you do not want 100% full-on low income housing! especially if you spent millions on fixing it up. you would really want mixed income housing these days cuz the low income/section 8 n*ggaz are just gonna come in & tear the *** up & in no time it will end up looking like garbage. make a portion of it low income & the larger part medium/upper income housing. here in california thats how they do it & it works better. & have security!!!

kimkelmor Back in the day it was a mess, but back before Houston hosted the SuperBowl they fixed it up.(plus Houston was trying to win an Olympic bid) So now mainly there are businesses, clubs, wine bars and nice lofts.
I really think that is so wonderful that these beautiful young women would donate money out of their own pocket to build affordable housing in city they grew up in,very commendable and respectable. Lord knows ..certain celebrities would even give second thought to giving back to their community..Beyonce is so gorgeous to me...

The fact is that MANY of the Katrina victims wee poor and lived in public housing due to choice that they made. I mean, they chose to have 5 kids knowing that they couldn’t support them because they lacked the education and know how to get a job and/or establish a career for themselves. But they are right – it’s your fault Beyonce because you made better choices, not to have 5 kids by 5 men, however you chose to pursue your dreams to be a star. Oh no, it doesn’t stop there, MANY of the Katrina victims DID NOT work and MANY have been on WELFARE well since they were BORN. But they are right; it’s your fault because you made better decisions. And to top it all off, because I made the wrong decisions in life you and the rest of America need to pay for it.

Yeah, I guess they could do that, but unless everyone gets jet air packs, they won't be able to navigate the city. Oh, wait...I forgot they will place them on the Metro Rail. Yes the rail runs into cars quite a bit, but Metro has assured us that it is totally safe and that the accidents are all of the drivers' faults.
Another reason we won't get a Summer Game...HELLO!!! and this is a biggie: HURRICANE SEASON! Even with moderate rain it floods here and don't try to leave; it will take you 22 hours to make a 4 hour trip.
Other than the extreme heat, awful traffic, flooding, tropical storms, hurricanes, West Nile Virus and white women who snap and kill their hubbies; Houston is a great place to host a major event!I love my city!

But as far as this "project" goes, where are they building it? Like I said in an earlier post: it can't be in the downtown area, rent will be too high for them to afford. The Lofts are taking over 3rd Ward off Clinton Dr. so it can't be over here in the "hood". And Oprah made her neighborhood on Angle Lane and I'm sure Oprah doesn't want to be upstaged by our own Bey and Kelly.
@ tiaje I am looking outside right now and the skies have "that look" so I will be in all day. And about this "project"...I'm with you because we all know Perry Homes is all over the place with lofts in downtown and none of that stuff is cheap. There are also some really nice lofts off of (I think) Elgin not too far from the two universities in the tre.
Some of these comments make me sick. First and foremost she doesnt have to do a dang thing for anyone truthfully. She is not obligated to support anyone. She should be a good person and treat the people who support her with kindness and respect, period. She doesn't have to spend her money on anyone anymore than you or I. The best way to see Baltimore is passing it on I-95, looking at it over the guardrails without slowing down. Have you ever entered a city and before you get to the off-ramp, [wondering] "what the helll am I doing here"? If you ever wanted to know how 'REAL' poor people live, Baltimore won't disappoint you. But I have to be fair, Like all major cities, the 'GOOD' part in the inner harbor area. Inner Harbor is beautiful with shops, restaurants, ***, boats, boardwalks, its a real comfortable area. Go a few block west and you hit porn central, stripclubs, ***, peepshows, real back alley ***. Then a lil' after that street, *** just basically goes downhill from there. Its just amazing to see how many people choose to be stuck in a cesspool. Hell, they even have a prison(that's right, a prison) right in the middle of the hood. If that ain't wake-up for your azz I don't know what isn't.
Nothing compares to giving. theres no better feeling in the world. Every has an opportunity to give and they should. Of course we don't have their money, but we do have enough to give to Save The Children. St. Judes Children's Hospital, HIV recovery sources, UNCF,Unicef Foundation., Ronald McDonald House, etc. There are so many and it doesn't cost anymore than $25. per month. Give it's a wonderful thing.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Wednesday on the Knowles-Rowland Temenos Place apartments on Gray at Chenevert. It will eventually be a $4 million, 43 unit complex. The Survivor's Foundation donated $1 million. The city of Houston is providing the bulk of the funding, community development and housing.
Beyonce, who is on tour, was represented at the groundbreaking by her family. The project is located in midtown next to St John's church. ------------------------------------------------

Last time i checked, SHE WORKED for HER MONEY, so how she spends it is between her and the charity she picks. And she has given to other charities, sorry she hasn't sent you a portfolio of it as yet for you to determine if it's good enough. And the woman in my family do have those expensive bags, sunglasses, clothes, etc and they worked for the money, so they buy whatever the hell they want too with the money that they worked for. If someone wants to buy a million dollar shoe, bag or whatever and they worked their behinds off for it, so let them be. Some people are just never satisfied.

Single room? Does that mean that these are all studio apartments?
Although it's still a great help. I would think it would be more beneficial to build a facility for low income "families".
