: Author Dave Matthews has a new book called Ace Of Spades where he tells the story of how he "passed" as White for nearly 20 years. Here's a synopsis of the book:
When David Matthewss mother abandoned him as an infant, she left him with white skin and the rumor that he might be half Jewish. For the next twenty years, he remained torn between his actual life in the ghetto of 1980s Baltimore and the world of white privilege he imagined. While his father, a black activist who counted Malcolm X among his friends, worked long hours as a managing editor at the Baltimore Afro-American, Matthews spent his early years escaping his fathers new wifea blond, blue-eyed young hippie with leftist leaning and a mean right hookand nursing an eleven-hour-a-day TV habit alongside his grandmother at the old folks home.Wow, you can barely see the Black in him...Forced to choose between black and white, he took what seemed to him the path of least resistance: he adopted the snarky persona of his well-to-do Jewish classmates, whose lives seemed so much easier than his own. Trouble was, outside of Woody Allen films and The Ten Commandments, he had no idea what being Jewish meant. And when his father moved them into a dilapidated house in the heart of the ghetto, Matthewss light skin was no longer an easy way out: it was a liability. Just because he don't look black doesn't mean he's not. My mother in law had two black parents, one was light skinned. Her and her siblings can pass for white. I personally am half black/filipino(hence my screen name) and I look like both my parents. My son on the other hand seems to be mistaken for being the mixed kid, even though my husband is black. Never judge what's on the surface. That's the wonderful thing about DNA.

My nieces and nephews are mixed as well but some are darker and they are beautiful! Am I the only one who paid attention in biology class. What color a child is and eye color and those things are based on DOMINANT & RECESSIVE genes. Look at Victoria Rowell's daughter, she has blond hair and blue eyes, obviously her father's genes dominated(because Victoria's first husband was White). I know a couple that both of them are bi-racial(half Black and half Caucasian) and the child looks very Causasian. I can't stand when I hear black people say such ignorant things.
A lot of you must be really really young and inexperienced. There have been many blacks who were bi-racial, light enough and had keen enough features that could pass for white. Just because you don't see black in him doesn't mean it is not there. Just think about it. If for example a light skinned black guy with small features and hair that is not so tight has a baby with a white woman who has straight hair and keen features, the baby would more than likely look like a white person. It is very possible that this guy is half black and there are many blacks in the entertainment industry and through out history who could and some have, pass for another race besides black. You probably would not believe that a few of our US presidents had black lineage either. But it pays to read a book besides the KJV Bible, black folks

It is obvious that the people on here do not get out much. Down here in the south there are a lot of people who look like they are white but are black. Especially in Louisiana, have you people not seen Devil in a Blue Dress. My ex's family looks white and you have to argue them down about not being white.

Yes, Egypt is in Africa. However, the world sees North Africans as white. If you ever read the demographic classifications of race, white or Caucasian people include Europeans and north Africans. This was a racist attempt to deny the intelligence of African people. If you really want to read something that will blow your minds, read Black Athena: the Afro-Asiatic Roots of Classical Civilization. This explains everything.
As for this dude being black, he could very well be. We are a diasporic people with many shades of blackness. I see it in my own family. My parents only had three children (my sisters and myself) and we are all a different shade and have different facial features. Both of my sisters have naturally curly hair and I have long, and very coarse hair. Black is black y'all. The only "pure" black folks living in this country are those straight from the Motherland or from the islands off of Alabama (the Gullah people).

I dont know, the book sounds a lot similar to another book called "My life on the color line" the book about a guy who mother was white and father was black during the fifties and sixties, anway he passed for white also, he also lived on the white side of town until his mother abandoned him and his brother, so his father moved in with his grandmother(his father's mother).

My kids are mixed (black and white) and my daughter looks puerto rican and my son looks white in coloring (blonge & blue eyed, pale skin) but has black features. It makes them NO LESS black or white. My nephew looks straight up Italian, with fair skin and dark black hair. NOBODY ever could guess that his mom is black. He never claimed otherwise, but if you didn't know, you would see a cute white kid with dark hair and big brown eyes. Genes are funny that way. I guess a lot of people ditched science classes....everyday of their school careers.
What's the problem with him writing a book, again? Writing can be cathartic. If other people didn't write about their experiences, how would we share stories with the rest of humanity? If anything, black people should know to value telling the stories of our experiences: good, bad, shameful, redeeming, triumphant, tragic. Did people study history, read about griots in here? In modern times, we use something called books to tell our stories. I guess other black authors should have just "dried their tears" about their lives? Whatever.

He owes no explanations to me but I believe he wrote this book to find his own identity. Barack went thru that too. You need at least one parent to mirror who you are, what you are and to form your identity without ending up with low self-esteem and people trying to categorize you.
If it were me who looked like him, I'd say I was of mixed race but would not label myself as being just black. He's already denied part of who he is.
You'll notice every mixed race child/adult who are torn to shreds about who they identify with are primarily from dysfunctional homes. The Derick Jeters of the world don't have such problems because they had both parents there to help them identify plus were nurtured.
