: DES MOINES, Iowa — (AP) A victorious Barack Obama portrayed his decisive first-place finish in the Iowa Democratic caucuses as a "defining moment" that he said would lead the way to change in Washington and an end to the war in Iraq.
The first-term senator from Illinois promised "a nation less divided and more united" and told those at a victory rally they could some day "look back and say this is the moment where it all began."
Obama, 46, is bidding to become the first black president. He garnered about 38 percent of the vote, comfortably ahead of former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, the former first lady.
"They said this day would never come. They said our sights were set too high. ... But on this January night, on this defining moment in history, you have done what the cynics said we couldn't do. You did what the state of New Hampshire can do in five days," Obama said.
If elected, Obama vowed, "I'll be a president that ends this war in Iraq and finally brings our troops home, who restores our moral standing, who understands that 9-11 is not a way a way to scare up votes but a challenge that should unite America and the world against the common threats of the 21st Century."
"Hope is the bedrock of this nation, the belief that our destiny will not be written for us but by us, by all those men and women who are not content to settle for the world as it is but who have the courage to remake the world as it should be," he said. "That is what we started here in Iowa and that is the message we can now carry to New Hampshire and beyond."
He appeared at the rally with his wife, Michelle, whom he called "the love of my life," and daughters Malia and Sasha.
As he came to the podium, he repeated "thank you" over and over to a crowd of supporters. Then, he added: "Thank you, Iowa."
An influx of new caucus-goers helped to boost Obama to victory in Iowa.
"We came together as Democrats, as Republicans and independents, to stand up and say we are one nation, we are one people and our time for change has come," Obama said as he launched his victory speech.
The freshman senator from Illinois was able to convince Iowans that he could do the most to shake up Washington, a feat that Clinton and Edwards had argued they'd be best able to accomplish.
Iowa was a three-way race for the Democratic contenders for months leading up to the caucuses, the first of the presidential nominating contests. Obama's win there gives him crucial momentum heading into New Hampshire, which holds its first-in-the-nation primary on Tuesday.
Obama repeatedly sparred with Clinton during the campaign over who was ready to lead the country. She accused him of being naive and inexperienced; he said her decades of Washington experience would mean more of the same if she were elected. Edwards faulted Obama's health care proposal, saying it would leave millions without coverage.
The Harvard Law School graduate launched his career by organizing black churches on the industrial South Side of Chicago. A turning point in his life came when he was chosen as the keynote speaker at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. He was elected to the U.S. Senate just four months later and became only the third black U.S. senator since Reconstruction.
After just two years in the Senate, Obama announced on the steps of the Old Capitol in Springfield, Ill., that he was running for president.

When Barack Obama speaks of "change," he's not talking about the war on drugs. He likes it just fine the way it is. Obama's faith in the drug war is so strong, he even thinks it can help revitalize New Orleans:
If elected, Mr. Obama said he would establish a Drug Enforcement Agency office in New Orleans that would be dedicated to stopping drug gangs across the region. [NYTimes]
Mr. Senator, the drug war causes crime, it doesn't prevent it. The problem is not, and has never been, a lack of drug law enforcement. New Orleans already has a DEA office and it has not made life any easier for anyone. It should go without saying that increased drug activity in the region is a result of economic disorder, which inevitably empowers the black market. Bringing in the feds might disrupt local drug networks temporarily, but that would merely increase violence as new dealers take over for their fallen competitors.
As we've *** in the Drug War Chronicle, Katrina revealed the frailty of Louisiana's drug war-ravaged criminal justice system. It is precisely in the aftermath of a great catastrophe like Katrina that the ridiculous quest to stop people from getting high is revealed as utterly wasteful and counter-productive.
Obama's drug war revitalization plan for New Orleans is the latest step in his successful bid to be the worst on drug policy among the democratic presidential contenders. He's lamented the "political capital" required to repair the despicable crack/powder sentencing disparity, a no-brainer racial justice issue that even drug war hall-of-famer Joe Biden wants to fix. At Howard University's Democratic Debate on minority issues, he stood there like an idiot while every other candidate managed to address some type of criminal justice reform. He was also the last democratic candidate to pledge an end to federal medical marijuana raids, and not because they're heartless and evil, but because they're "not a good use of resources."
Well, Barack Obama, you know what else is a poor use of resources? Creating a second DEA office in New Orleans when people still have holes in their roofs and mud in their basements.

Washington, DC –Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, today released its 2007 list of Washington’s “Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians.” The list, in alphabetical order, includes:
1. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY): In addition to her long and sordid ethics record, Senator Hillary Clinton took a lot of heat in 2007 – and rightly so – for blocking the release her official White House records. Many suspect these records contain a treasure trove of information related to her role in a number of serious Clinton-era scandals. Moreover, in March 2007, Judicial Watch filed an ethics complaint against Senator Clinton for filing false financial disclosure forms with the U.S. Senate (again). And Hillary’s top campaign contributor, Norman Hsu, was exposed as a felon and a fugitive from justice in 2007. Hsu pleaded guilt to one count of grand theft for defrauding investors as part of a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme.
2. Rep. John Conyers (D-MI): Conyers reportedly repeatedly violated the law and House ethics rules, forcing his staff to serve as his personal servants, babysitters, valets and campaign workers while on the government payroll. While the House Ethics Committee investigated these allegations in 2006, and substantiated a number of the accusations against Conyers, the committee blamed the staff and required additional administrative record-keeping and employee training. Judicial Watch obtained *** in 2007 from a former Conyers staffer that sheds new light on the activities and conduct on the part of the Michigan congressman, which appear to be at a minimum inappropriate and likely unlawful. Judicial Watch called on the Attorney General in 2007 to investigate the matter.
3. Senator Larry Craig (R-ID): In one of the most shocking scandals of 2007, Senator Craig was caught by police attempting to solicit *** in a Minneapolis International Airport men’s bathroom during the summer. Senator Craig reportedly “sent signals” to a police officer in an adjacent stall that he wanted to engage in sexual activity. When the police officer showed Craig his police identification under the bathroom stall divider and pointed toward the exit, the senator reportedly exclaimed 'No!'” When asked to produce identification, Craig presented police his U.S. Senate business card and said, “What do you think of that?” The power play didn’t work. Craig was arrested, charged and entered a guilty plea. Despite enormous pressure from his Republican colleagues to resign from the Senate, Craig refused.
4. Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA): As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee's subcommittee on military construction, Feinstein reviewed military construction government contracts, some of which were ultimately awarded to URS Corporation and Perini, companies then owned by Feinstein's husband, Richard Blum. While the Pentagon ultimately awards military contracts, there is a reason for the review process. The Senate's subcommittee on Military Construction's approval carries weight. Sen. Feinstein, therefore, likely had influence over the decision making process. Senator Feinstein also attempted to undermine ethics reform in 2007, arguing in favor of a perk that allows members of Congress to book multiple airline flights and then cancel them without financial penalty. Judicial Watch’s investigation into this matter is ongoing.
5. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R-NY): Giuliani came under fire in late 2007 after it was discovered the former New York mayor’s office “billed obscure city agencies for tens of thousands of dollars in security expenses amassed during the time when he was beginning an extramarital relationship with future wife Judith Nathan in the Hamptons…” ABC News also reported that Giuliani provided Nathan with a police vehicle and a city driver at taxpayer expense. All of this news came on the heels of the federal indictment on corruption charges of Giuliani’s former Police Chief and business partner Bernard Kerik, who pleaded guilty in 2006 to accepting a $165,000 bribe in the form of renovations to his Bronx apartment from a construction company attempting to land city contracts.
6. Governor Mike Huckabee (R-AR): Governor Huckabee enjoyed a meteoric rise in the polls in December 2007, which prompted a more thorough review of his ethics record. According to The Associated Press: “[Huckabee’s] career has also been colored by 14 ethics complaints and a volley of questions about his integrity, ranging from his management of campaign cash to his use of a nonprofit organization to subsidize his income to his destruction of state computer files on his way out of the governor’s office.” And what was Governor Huckabee’s response to these ethics allegations? Rather than cooperating with investigators, Huckabee sued the state ethics commission twice and attempted to *** the ethics process down.
7. I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby: Libby, former Chief of Staff to Vice President *** Cheney, was sentenced to 30 months in prison and fined $250,000 for lying and obstructing the Valerie Plame CIA leak investigation. Libby was found guilty of four felonies -- two counts of perjury, one count of making false statements to the FBI and one count of obstructing justice – all serious crimes. Unfortunately, Libby was largely let off the hook. In an appalling lack of judgment, President Bush issued “Executive Clemency” to Libby and commuted the sentence.
8. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL): A “Dishonorable Mention” last year, Senator Obama moves onto the “ten most wanted” list in 2007. In 2006, it was discovered that Obama was involved in a suspicious real estate deal with an indicted political fundraiser, Antoin “Tony” Rezko. In 2007, more reports surfaced of deeper and suspicious business and political connections It was reported that just two months after he joined the Senate, Obama purchased $50,000 worth of stock in speculative companies whose major investors were his biggest campaign contributors. One of the companies was a biotech concern that benefited from legislation Obama pushed just two weeks after the senator purchased $5,000 of the company’s shares. Obama was also nabbed conducting campaign business in his Senate office, a violation of federal law.
9. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA): House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who promised a new era of ethics enforcement in the House of Representatives, snuck a $25 million gift to her husband, Paul Pelosi, in a $15 billion Water Resources Development Act recently passed by Congress. The pet project involved renovating ports in Speaker Pelosi's home base of San Francisco. Pelosi just happens to own apartment buildings near the areas targeted for improvement, and will almost certainly experience a significant boost in property value as a result of Pelosi's earmark. Earlier in the year, Pelosi found herself in hot water for demanding access to a luxury Air Force jet to ferry the Speaker and her entourage back and forth from San Francisco non-stop, in unprecedented request which was wisely rejected by the Pentagon. And under Pelosi’s leadership, the House ethics process remains essentially *** down – which protects members in both parties from accountability.
10. Senator Harry Reid (D-NV): Over the last few years, Reid has been embroiled in a series of scandals that cast serious doubt on his credibility as a self-professed champion of government ethics, and 2007 was no different. According to The Los Angeles Times, over the last four years, Reid has used his influence in Washington to help a developer, Havey Whittemore, clear obstacles for a profitable real estate deal. As the project advanced, the Times reported, “Reid received tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from Whittemore.” Whittemore also hired one of Reid’s sons (Leif) as his personal lawyer and then promptly handed the junior Reid the responsibility of negotiating the real estate deal with federal officials. Leif Reid even called his father’s office to talk about how to obtain the proper EPA permits, a clear conflict of interest.

Congratulations Obama! YusefX I am about tired of you talking about Ron Paul. First off, he is Republican and this is the primaries. Out of Hillary, Edwards and Obama choose a candidate besides Obama. We all knew since day one that Ron Paul didn't have a chance. True he talked about changing a lot of things but looks like a senile old man nobodies taking seriously. Plus he gets the endorsement of the Aryan nation and has insulted black people several times. Do you really think all those white people voted for Obama just because he is black? No, they voted for he because they believe he can change this country around, and I do too.
I still have chills from Obama’s success in Iowa and his passionate speech last ***. I’m hopelessly optimistic, so I never doubted this black mans presidential electability. I’m confident that he’ll have the same support in New Hampshire as he did in Iowa. My concern, however, is South Carolina Caucuses with an overwhelming 50% black vote. I hate to say it, but our people are some of the biggest *** haters (oops… said I wasn’t going to use that word in ‘08) when it come to our own. Our “civil rights” leaders and black problemticians ie, Andrew Young, Jesse Jackson, *** are trying their best to discourage black voters from voting for Senator Barack. I’m an independent thinker and not a follower, but I’m not sure how much influence the above named “leaders” have over the masses of black people. I just hope my people base their votes on accurate knowledge of their candidate of choice rather than what they heard from some loud-mouth, jealous hearted, crabs-in-a-barrel, morally decadent black “leaders”.

Two inescapable facts: Barack Obama did miss votes—BECAUSE HE WAS CAMPAIGNING.
As far as the vote counts in Iowa, the democratic totals were approximately 220,000—ABOUT TWICE the total number of Republican votes. So to write that the Republicans had four times the vote is COMPLETELY IN ERROR!
Unfortunately, the "old school" guard of Jackson/*** might well see it as their duty of maintaining the status quo of black people being "victimized" and "without hope" threatened by the uplifting energy and surprising victory of Obama, and like crabs in a barrel, seek to upend his campaign.
FORTUNATELY, Obama's support cuts across the board and he doesn't need their endorsements.
I think that the STRANGLEHOLD of the Bush/Clinton Dynasty of the last 20 years will finally be broken.
And I think that although Ron Paul indeed has a viable message, he himself is a non-viable candidate. Unless of course, he seeks the nation's highest office…in the Twilight Zone…

It's funny how white America and some black people only see Obama as a black man. The man is multicultural. Yes, his father is Kenyan but had absolutely nothing to do with his rearing. He was raised by his white mother, grandparents and Indonesian step-father. To me, he's the first PERSON OF COLOR and first multicultural person to win the Iowa Caucus and that says a whole lot too. The reason why Obama won that caucus is people want CHANGE and Obama doesn't come with the ***/Jackson race card baggage. To all of my young black people out there, please encourage everyone you can to vote. The only how we can make sure our canidate is in the whie house is if we all vote. I am in my mid 20's and will be going out to highschools in my community to encourage the young people to vote. And any opportunity I get to speak to any body about voting be them young or old or white, black or purple, I do. You would be surprised at how many older people dont vote.
Let's set out to break another record and have all of our people who can vote to do it!

Im not a child and dont need to be force fed. I dp do my research on the internet and watch the news. Hell I even have Obama's last book. Unfortunatly, I also realize that there are some people out there who do not and will not step out of their regular box to see what is goning on.

While every senator running for president voted for the war in Iraq in 2002, Obama opposed the war in Iraq even BEFORE he became a U.S. senator.
As far as the deal with Tony Rezko, state all the facts instead of parsing them. Tony Rezko was not indicted when Obama made the deal with him. In fact Tony Rezko owned some vacant land next to where Obama lived and Obama who was friends with Rezko (and didn't hide it) got a sweetheart deal for a small slice of the vacant parcel. Obama himself admitted that this was a boneheaded deal but this deal is nothing more than one friend hooking up another friend.

At first I was a little shaky with him, but I think as a Black person we always have to be over qualified compared to our white counterparts, in reality, how much work did George Bush do before getting into office, when I thought about that I realized I was being unfair and indeed Obama, had enough experience to be president compared to past presidents...even more so he has a vision, no other candidate has that .....I think he will be a good leader because he can give us some hope, if not I think this country will fall apart, people need hope, he reminds me of Robert F Kennedy just a little bit, I think he will motivate the younger generation....and he is married to a smart woman!!!! wow!!!!!
