But instead of attacking Sen Obama, the former first lady took a swing at one of the most important men in the history of the United States - Dr. Martin Luther King.

Belieive me... if MTO has anything to do with this, I KNOW it was taken out of context. I'd rather hear the ENTIRE interview before I draw my conclusions. Why in hell would Hilary say (or mean) anything so reckless so close to the elections and with Obama leading... it doesn't add up. Not to mention, it seems to me (from that tiny text that MTO decided to post) that her point was more towards President Johnson and his term, than trying to attack MLK.

Dr King worked to realize his dream. And to basically say the president made it happen is a slap in the face to every black person who was killed, had dogs sicked on them, and resisted fire hoses. MLK gave this speech in 1963 and to this day all it's still a dream in certain parts of the United States. We (people of color) have come far but don't get too happy 'cause it's NOWHERE far enough. She didn't take anything away from Dr. King, Jr. She just said that there was a president in place that allowed some of the dream to take place. Motivation and action takes place because of a persons hopes and dreams...I will not take what Hillary said to be an insult but I will say that her statement is more of a reason why we should have a president like Barack Obama who has hopes and dreams and with the title of president can makes those hopes and dreams a reality. MLK had a dream a GREAT on...LBJ realized that and made MLK's dream a reality...think about it, Hillary is saying she can one day be the power that LBJ had to make DREAMS that benefit all us a reality. Pls read the links above. I donated to Obama's campaign before these news stories broke that he is not a proponent of race based affirmative action and now I am not so sure that I can still support him. Because due to racism that still exists in this country affirmative action is still needed to help blacks gain employment and equal access to education. We can not allow our affirmative action programs to include poor whites as Obama appears to be considering. Our forefathers fought and died during the civil rights movement for equal access to jobs, that affirmative action is supposed to help enforce and we can not loose these gains, due to the lack of support of our "own" (Obama) politicians. I am not sure why Obama does not appear to have the same concern as many African Americans do regarding the need to safe guard the few gains that we have received due to affirmative action. Can it be that he is out of touch with the Afro- American community because of his upbringing (raised by white family) or privileged life or not being a descendent of slaves? Because of this reason and others I may vote for Clinton, although she is white she agrees with maintaining race based affirmative action, from what I have read. Black Dr.s and Lawyers couldn’t even get a decent job before the civil rights movement and affirmative action. Many black Dr.s , lawyers and professionals were porters on trains, due to racism. Many of our people could not feed their families. This racism still exists; many Afro- Americans would not be hired today, even though they are the best candidate for the job if it were not for corporation’s affirmative action initiatives. Whites tend to hire whites even unqualified whites.

Without a vision the people perish. I have not heard the interview but even if the wording is verbatim, she should have stated it another way. If Dr. King had not polarized the Black population of America and helped us realize that we truly have a voice then President Johnson would not have had a reason to pass any legislation to try to bring about change. I believe that change was inevitable. If you have never had the opportunity, I encourage you to make a trip to Memphis to visit the Civil Rights Museum. It will really motivate and inspire you to raise your social consciencness. To look at the hotel room where Dr. King last stayed, the balcony where he was shot and the window where he was shot from as well as other remnents and artifacts of the Civil Rights movement. It is truly amazing.

I think what looks and sounds stupid is hearing a black person say that they care about what whites think of them...i've always hated comments like that and I still do...i could care less about what white people think of our race. Yes I would like for ignorant people to gain knowledge about their history but I want those that don't know to become aware for only that reason and NOT because we are an embarrassment and the other races are laughing at us. the fact is, Hillary is discrediting the efforts that MLK brought forth. MLK was a strong leader and if it wasn't for his voice, the president may have brushed it off. Inequality had been going on a long time before leaders like MLK came forth. I think that she should have reworded that because it does look like MLK did nothing but dream, like MTO has in its title.
What hillary is trying to say is not nice! She is trying to say that " Blacks" can talk and dream as much as they want to, but only "whites" can make their dreams come through by favor. What Lyndon Baines Johnson did was courageous--Politically. He knew that by signing the legislation he signed that he was handing the south to the republicans on a silver platter. It takes political courage to do that. But thats his job, to protect all Americans even if its not politically popular. Thats why we celebrate Martin Luther Kings birthday instead of Lyndon Johnson's. The works of Martin Luther King and others made the president act.
Like I said, I SAW and HEARD what she said, she said it in a way to connect Martin Luther King dreaming with Barack Obama hoping and that someone who is great at hoping and dreaming is short on action.

The Civil rights movement is no different in actions from the freeing of the slaves. You may have a president that passes a bill, but please believe me that it was never initiated by that presedents moral actions, but because of a movement. Lydon Johnson may be same time of president as Abraham Lincoln. Do you think that Lincoln would ever have pushed to free the slaves if he did not see the vision, this in no way credits him as anti slavery, but simply as a man with foresite set on delivering on the demands of the nation. To credit Lyndon and discredit Martin Luther King Jr, is the same as saying that researcher is less influential than the presenter. Hiliary falls into the same complex that white America has been trapped in, which being able to see beyond their own ego. If MLK jr. had never established this united front and garnered the respect of the nation, there would never be a movement for Lyndon to sign off on; cause God knows he would never have the balls or even for that matter the sense of urgency to create such a movement. MLK Jr. has done what 95% of our population will not do, stand up to a bully, with a non-violent approach.

Clinton was in no way was speaking down or saying that Dr. King was not fruitful. MLK knew that his hopes could only come alive if someone who had more power than he did push his hopes, which was the President of our country at the time, to make changes. In essence, minorities (people of color) need the help of the majority for us to have equality. Does anyone know the qualities of a good and effective leader? I'm gonna say what I said again. People examine the facts and put it into context. Obama is 50% foreign. He is 50% african and 50% white american. Earlier in his life, he went to school overseas. The latter years were spent with his white grandparents. If elected, he wants to have a republican cabinet. He also is not for affirmative action, he feels it's no longer needed. Take the focus off of his color and realize what would happen if we elected a 50% foreigner as a president. I don't know why people can't see this. Why they refuse to except the fact. The average American logs more hours on drama, sports and entertainment television than they do on news and politics. Our forefathers fought and died during the civil rights movement for equal access to jobs, that affirmative action is supposed to help enforce and we can not loose these gains, due to the lack of support of our "own" (Obama) politicians. I am not sure why Obama does not appear to have the same concern as many African Americans do regarding the need to safe guard the few gains that we have received due to affirmative action. Can it be that he is out of touch with the Afro- American community because of his upbringing (raised by white family) or privileged life or not being a descendent of slaves? Because of this reason and others I may vote for Clinton, although she is white she agrees with maintaining race based affirmative action, from what I have read. Black Dr.s and Lawyers couldn’t even get a decent job before the civil rights movement and affirmative action. Many black Dr.s , lawyers and professionals were porters on trains, due to racism. Many of our people could not feed their families. I am so very surprised by the lack of ability of so many of you to comprehend and interpret Sen Clinton's comment regarding Dr. King's Dream. First of all, that comment was directlly insulting to Sen Obama. Secondly, it was even more insulting to Dr. King. In her statement, she is basically denying Dr. King's legacy of ACTION for the 20 years that he led peace and non-violent PROTESTS of Jim Crow. For her to say that Dr. King's dream did not become a reality until the ACTION of Pres Johnson is to deny King's own ACTIVE role in leading CHANGE that RESULTED in Johnson's support of civil rights legislation. Without the EFFORTS and CHANGE led by Dr. King and other activists of that time, no legilation would have even been proposed. Yes, it required a political intervention to LEGALLY bring about change on the books, but it was ONLY through the ACTIONS and not just the DREAM of Dr. King that this was ever possible. So, to those of you who support her comments, you are WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. It was not due to the white man with pen that CHANGE was made. It was through the ACTION and WORK AND CHANGE of those who worked tirelessly like Dr. King for years years before Johnson was even presented with the opportunity to pen legislation into active law. They are clueless as to the struggles that blacks endured not too long ago. In fact, they fail to understand that some of their same white friends today are being raised by the very parents that supported Jim Crow. Thank you, kitty. I did not want to do it but you made me. Habeas corpus is found in the constitution and is thus not unconstiutional as you suggest. First, the controversy was whether non-citizens outside of US sort of soil have the right to habeas corpus review in federal courts. GB is not US soil, and that is where the controversy stems from. In short, the Supreme Court held yes, habeas is MANDATED by the Constitution. Then the Military Commission Act was passed, making my initial question to you much more relevant and sexy than your quibbling about habeas. In short:
1) You though habeas was unconstiutional. 2) Did not know about Padilla. 3) Demonstrated that you did not know that the habeas issue has been resolved. 4) Thought that it was directly relevant to US citizens, as if they would be shipped down there. 5) Expressed no international law concerns about it. 6) And still cited to it to show me how smart you are.

Q. You have called yourself a firm believer in affirmative action. How big a role should race play in college-admissions decisions, and why? How much should socioeconomic status factor in to those decisions, and why?
A. Diversity enriches education. As America grows more diverse, it is essential that students be exposed to diversity in all its forms and learn how to effectively communicate, collaborate, and compete with people of all backgrounds.
Some measures traditionally used to determine college admissions—such as college entrance exam scores—might not necessarily be the best predictors of college success, placing some very talented students at a disadvantage.
One of this year’s MacArthur awardees—the “genius” awards—is an innovator named Deborah Bial. She proposed a model to identify promising students from disadvantaged urban backgrounds, using an alternative set of qualities as predictors of success in college.
Candidates for this program are selected using a process based on qualities such as leadership, motivation, teamwork, and ability to effectively communicate. The students that are selected form a “posse,” and are provided with extra supports, and end up graduating form selective colleges with a very high success rate.
This shows the validity of using less-recognized skills as indicators of likely educational success. And this would probably be considered affirmative action, by specifically choosing students from less-advantaged backgrounds. But maybe it just shows that the playing ground, using traditional metrics for college admission, is unacceptably uneven.
When properly structured, affirmative action programs can open up opportunities to qualified minorities—and can do so without diminishing opportunities for white students. Given the dearth of black and Latino Ph.D. candidates in mathematics and the sciences, for example, a scholarship program for minorities interested in getting advanced degrees in these fields won’t keep white students out of such programs but can broaden the pool of talent that we need to prosper in the new economy.
We shouldn’t ignore that race continues to matter: To suggest that our racial attitudes play no part in the socioeconomic disparities that we often observe turns a blind eye to both our history and our experience—and relieves us of the responsibility to make things right.
The very question suggests this is an either/or thing—either you want to increase opportunities for racial minorities or you want to increase opportunities for poor students of all races. I reject this. We can—and should—do both.
We should work to build an America where the qualified white student from rural South Carolina who worked hard to beat the odds and the qualified black student from the South Side of Chicago who did the same can attend classes together, learn from each other, teach their classmates a thing or two and vice versa, and together go off into the world prepared for a diverse workforce.

I donated to Obama's campaign before these news stories broke that he is not a proponent of race based affirmative action and now I am not so sure that I can still support him. Because due to racism that still exists in this country affirmative action is still needed to help blacks gain employment and equal access to education. We can not allow our affirmative action programs to include poor whites as Obama appears to be considering. Our forefathers fought and died during the civil rights movement for equal access to jobs, that affirmative action is supposed to help enforce and we can not loose these gains, due to the lack of support of our "own" (Obama) politicians. I am not sure why Obama does not appear to have the same concern as many African Americans do regarding the need to safe guard the few gains that we have received due to affirmative action. Can it be that he is out of touch with the Afro- American community because of his upbringing (raised by white family) or privileged life or not being a descendent of slaves? Because of this reason and others I may vote for Clinton, although she is white she agrees with maintaining race based affirmative action, from what I have read. Black Dr.s and Lawyers couldn’t even get a decent job before the civil rights movement and affirmative action. Many black Dr.s , lawyers and professionals were porters on trains, due to racism. Many of our people could not feed their families. This racism still exists; many Afro- Americans would not be hired today, even though they are the best candidate for the job if it were not for corporation’s affirmative action initiatives. Whites tend to hire whites even unqualified whites.

It's official, whoever writes for MediaTakeOut is an idiot who suffers from a case of adult ADD. Her statement was clumsy and could have come out better, but no where does she say he "didn't do anything." In essence, all she's saying is that in order for effective, large scale change to occur, you have to have the support of the legislative branch. Her point was that while King's work was monumental in the abolishment of the Jim Crow system, if Johnson or some other leader didn't pass the Civil Rights Act, we could very well still be living in a segregated America. (Which is true when it comes to the laws and policies that govern our country. We've seen with Bush that grass root movements and protests don't work if your elected leader is deaf to his/her constituents. We've been protesting for our troops to return home for how many years and yet he's shot down every effort aimed at doing so. Any measure that he doesn't agree with, he simply vetoes. There is only so much change you can affect when your government is not willing to institute any of it. Which only goes to show just how ineffectual our system of government is.) If anything, her quote was a poor diversion tactic that she used to dodge the issue at hand, but it is no way a slam against Dr. King. I'm not even a Hilary supporter, but this post is just stupid.

After the Civil War, Blacks owned less than one half percent of the country's wealth. Here we are in 2008, and Blacks still own less than one half percent of the country's wealth. The problem with "Civil Rights" is that it only integrated the people, and not the wealth. Whites still earn more wealth, and control more business than their Black counterparts. (even with all things considered equal, education etc.)During the time of segregation, Blacks owned and controlled just about every business venture you can think of. But once we became "integrated" Blacks abandoned their business and ran to the Caucasian. Think of how many of those businesses that may have become the Wal-Marts, or even Microsofts of today had our people witheld, and patronized their own. Of course, we should have the freedom to patronize businesses owned by all ethnic groups, but we should have NEVER ceased to support our own enterprises. People should engage in due dilligence and stop accepting what HIStory and teLIEvision has presented. I implore you to google Civil Rights cases of 1883 and 14th amendment citizenship of 1873. Civil rights is something you grant your pets, when you treat them with compassion. Malcolm was right when he said "our struggle should be for human rights," because the struggle becomes an international struggle, as there are treaties to protect your rights. Concerning Dr. King, as long as he taught Black people to react non-violently in the face of White violence Dr. King's efforts were applauded by many Whites. But when Dr. King extended his philosophy of non-violence into opposition towards the Vietnam war and America's foreign policy this is when the FBI and CIA accelerated their efforts to terminate him.(James Earl Ray admitted that he was a patsy, and did not kill Dr. King, datgurl)Furthermore, Dr. King was building an alliance with Malcolm, and actually began to agree with many of his assertions toward the end of his life. Thus, the powers that be could not allow these two mental powerhouses to continue to exist. So, if you evaluate the totality of the situation, and do some research, you'll find that "The Dream" is yet to be fufilled.

I don't understand why people resort to name calling and insults when there is a difference of opinion. No one says you have to agree but can't you agree to disagree? I donated to Obama's campaign before these news stories broke that he is not a proponent of race based affirmative action and now I am not so sure that I can still support him. Because due to racism that still exists in this country affirmative action is still needed to help blacks gain employment and equal access to education. We can not allow our affirmative action programs to include poor whites as Obama appears to be considering. Our forefathers fought and died during the civil rights movement for equal access to jobs, that affirmative action is supposed to help enforce and we can not loose these gains, due to the lack of support of our "own" (Obama) politicians. I am not sure why Obama does not appear to have the same concern as many African Americans do regarding the need to safe guard the few gains that we have received due to affirmative action. Can it be that he is out of touch with the Afro- American community because of his upbringing (raised by white family) or privileged life or not being a descendent of slaves? I know way too many educated and well off blacks who got there by WORKING hard and Educating themselves. I'm not worried about any Casinos. I'm sure most people are not thinking about Casinos on an Indian reservation..which is itself is not a good thing by the way. There is a lot of crime, suicide, alcoholism, drug addiction and debt on Indian reservations... those are the issues you should be concerned with. Some of that stems from Casinos being there. Again, inform yoursef and worry about the important issues!

When she talked about the dream, she was just simply saying that it took LBJ to realize MLK's dream...and he took his political muscle to make MLK's DREAM a reality. i'm so confused how anyone could take that out of context. u can be the strongest leader in the world, but if u don't have "clout" with your government...then how is change going to happen. She simply meant that MLK, gave LBJ the vision to make his DREAM reality. No different then if someone starts a business, usually a DREAM they have, if they need a loan it won't happen without the BANK helping you accomplish that dream, you have the DREAM, they have the MONEY power to make that happen. MLK had the DREAM, LBJ had the POLITICAL power to make it happen. She is more than acknowledging MLK for his contributions, if anything she's saying she'll listen to someone if they have a DREAM and use her power as president that make it happen, especially if it benefits the country!
At least I'm not the only one who doesn't see this as an insult. In no way is she discrediting what MLK did. MLK took the first step in starting a revolution, and that first step is always the hardest. It's far easier to follow than it is to lead. But even with initiative and strong will, nothing can be accomplished without power. LBJ had that power. He had the power of the government behind him, and the power of his skillful mind, which he used to play senators against each other. Without that there would have been no civil rights laws of 1964 or any after that. No president in the history of the United States has ever done as much for black people as Johnson. It's just a shame that his legacy will always mainly be connected with Vietnam.
That's why I hold LBJ and MLK in the same regard. One without the other would have never worked. So no, she's not discrediting one or the other, she's just saying that you can't have one without the other. There can be no action without having dreamed of it first, and dreams are nothing without action.

Hillary and Bill have stood up for affirmative action and other issues relevant to black lives in America. Just because Obama is 1/2 African and 1/2 white does not mean he has an agenda that is in alignment with the best interests of most Black Americans. You must do your research. The Black families lives are dependent on our jobs and businesses, so this is on the top of my agenda and I can not vote for a candidate that I believe will harm our financial situation, by sharing our AA with poor whites.

As for the Casinos. Get Real! How man American Indians actually hold a college degree? How man actually use those funds to attend college? Have you been to an Indian Reservation? I never said that I was an Indian. I am definitely black. I have visited the res, however before the casinos they were worse off then they are now. They have been able to use that money to build schools etc.. You don't believe that you personally need AA, because you "think" that you are well off, so you don't appear to be to be concerned about how loosing any part of it will negatively affect our less fortunate black brothers or sisters.

Sorry...my husband and I plan very well. My husband doesn't have to work for anyone..as his profession allows him to be a 'free agent'. He's an attorney and a good and successful one I might add. Also my career is not one where I have to work for anyone either. I'm in Finance. However, we also own a business together that is run from home.
We plan. Thank God we are able to invest and plan because we don't want handouts and are able to support ourselves fully and our children without any help. Yes, I am thankful and know we are fortunate but at the same time I know it's because we are just smart too..we invest wisely, we plan for hard times. We prepared ourselves and continue to do so.We don't have to worry about our home, or our kids educations. I'm thankful but also very happy we had and have the sense to prepare!

You can hope but we are not in a world in which AA is not needed we live in 2008 in a world of obvious racism, in which blacks are still physically and financially feeling the affects of racism and the after effects of slavery. AA is supposed to be a safeguard to try to right these wrongs and we need stronger laws not dissolution of AA by handing some of it over to poor whites. Obama may not understand this because he was raised by a white family and was not the descendent of slaves. So that may be why he wants to share AA with poor whites.

Yes, and I will continue to HOPE! I didn't say that Affirmative Action should disappear today but it will disappear eventually. WE as a people need to WORK toward a nation where AA is NOT NEEDED. That is why I said it is my hope that one day AA is not needed and trust me..one day it will not be needed and that day may come sooner than you think! I am a believer..not a dreamer. I appreciate everyone's right to an opinion, even your's cat4everr but it is a somewhat logically flawed argument to cast everyone who disagrees with you as an idiot. I think what some of the people are trying to say, at least speaking for myself what I feel, is that Clinton was trying to create an analogy between King and Obama to lead the audience to further deduce that dreaming and hoping are not presidential characteristics--action is. I say all of these things are and I do think it was offensive that she initially did minimize the SIGNIFICANCE the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King played in attaining rights for people of color and that she allowed someone to make light of the JFK assassination before introducing her.
I don't think anyone on this site is trying to say, "What's she talking about, MLK ended segregation, he passed a law" but clearly his dream, devotion and dedication galvanized the masses and created the momentum necessary to push a movement. His martyr-like assassination led his followers to demand change. One of MLK's favorite quotations was "Power conceded nothing without demand" that should be enough said.
I think it's cool that people are debating about politics, but if we feel we are smarter than everyone else try to enlighten, not condescend. We are all a very intelligent, beautiful and blessed people and we won't get anywhere by tearing each other down, we've got to start building each other up.

They attend great schools where they are doing well and top their classes in predominately white schools in an area where many black are doing well and the playing field is pretty level. You don't know what we do for our people. We have probably done more work than you have (as many well off and upper middle class blacks have)..so let's not go there. I believe in helping those who can not help themselves. I don't believe in giving blanket handouts to ANY group of people.

The black community is not perfect. But your name calling posts do not appear empathetic to their plight and really does not distinguish you as a professional. Of course the Black community can do better, but that does not mean that affirmative action should be diluted by handing it over to poor whites as Obama would like. My family and I have done a lot for the black community I come from a family of civil rights and union leaders and I know how to research and read between the lines of political speeches and rhetoric. The bottom line is that Obama wants to dilute AA by including poor whites and Hillary and Bill want defend race based AA. If AA is a great concern of an individual voter they most take that into account.

It is not a crutch to use AA to help heal the detriments of racism and the gross injury of slavery. Obama wants to include poor whites in AA and I believe that it was not intended for that purpose. As a black person I and others like Maya Angelou and many other black community leaders have a right to vote for or endorse whoever we choose and we have our own personally correct and measured reasons for our choices. I believe that all of our choices should be respected without name calling.

Independents seem to be jumping on the Obama bandwagon because they believe he can bring "change" to Washington. What they fail to realize is that he is being advised by leftovers from the Carter administration including Carter's national secuirty advisor, Z. Brzezinski who has called for world government numerous times. Obama needs to be questioned whether he agrees with his advisor on the need for world government. (And the media calls Ron Paul a kook?)

I think this statement was taken out of context. In some ways Hiliary is right. The struggleof equality was a dream and yes African Americans fought to see that dream come true. However, if it was not for some politician having some sort of compassion by viewing us equals, a lot of what we have today would not have come into fruition. AA has turned into a QUOTA system. When the EEOC was strong they used to enforce companies having a diverse workforce.
