: MediaTakeOut.com just got word that the autopsy for rapper Pimp C was released today. According to the autopsy, Pimp C died from a combination of sleep apnea and an overdose of Promethazine/Codeine (cough syrup).
Pimp C (born Chad Butler) was found dead in his room at the Mondrian Hotel in Hollywood, California on December 4th 2007.
According to My Fox Houston, Los Angeles County Asst. Chief Coroner Ed Winter said that Pimp C's death has been ruled as an accident.
Promethazine/Codeine is an over-the-counter drug that is celebrated by Houston rappers and often referred to as "Lean".
See, that goes to show that MTO don't know what they're talking about. Promethzine/Codeine is not OTC. They're both prescription drugs that you have to get a presciption for. That's why people use it as "lean" b/c it's not something you can just walk into a pharmacy and get, and also b/c of the high you get from it. Get your facts straight. I know b/c I'm a nurse. Ok.....maybe Im just old but where im from (Detroit), Ive never heard of people getting high this way here. Is this primarily a Southern thing?? I thought it was the dumbest thing when they were sippin from baby bottles in the videos. (LAME!!) I seen a television piece on this and I heard this stuff not only kills but it makes you fat and rots your teeth which isnt a good look to be fat and toothless. It must also be pretty addicitive seeing that no one stops using it even when their friends die from abusing it. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO GOOD OLE WEED???? Its a shame that *** C is gone over this.
The sleep apnea was definitely the main reason behind his accidental death. Promethazine/codeine is known for its side effect of drowsiness. (Promethazine is the drug given to you to stop vomiting and it will knock you out for hours!) Sleep apnea is when you stop breathing while sleeping. So with the promethazine slowing down his breathing combined with the sleep apnea, there was no way he would have survived. It was just his time to go "home" where he will no worries.
First of all MTO. He didn't die of an overdose. The amount found in him wasn't lethal at all. It was the mixture of the syrup and sleep apnea. Ya'll need to get ya'll story correct. Hell, go to PANEWS.com and read the story first. Smoking One Joint is Equivalent to 20 Cigarettes, Study Says Tuesday , January 29, 2008
Smoking marijuana is far more dangerous than smoking cigarettes, according to a group of scientists in New Zealand. The researchers found that smoking one joint is equivalent to 20 cigarettes in terms of lung cancer. While studies in the past have shown that marijuana can cause cancer, few have actually established a strong link between marijuana use and the actual incidence of lung cancer. For the study, researchers interviewed 79 lung cancer patients in an effort identify the main risk factors for the disease, such as smoking, family history and occupation. The patients were questioned about alcohol and marijuana consumption. In the high-exposure group, lung cancer risk rose by 5.7 times for patients who smoked more than a joint a day for 10 years, or two joints a day for 5 years, after adjusting for other variables, including cigarette smoking. "Cannabis smokers end up with five times more carbon monoxide in their bloodstream (than tobacco smokers)," team leader Richard Beasley, at the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand, said in a news release. The scientists also noted that marijuana could be expected to harm the airways more than tobacco since its smoke contained twice the level of carcinogens, such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons, compared with tobacco cigarettes. "There are higher concentrations of carcinogens in cannabis smoke...what is intriguing to us is there is so little work done on cannabis when there is so much done on tobacco,” said Beasley. "In the near future we may see an 'epidemic' of lung cancers connected with this new carcinogen. And the future risk probably applies to many other countries, where increasing use of cannabis among young adults and adolescents is becoming a major public health problem,” he added. Study results appear in the in the European Respiratory Journal.
I am a certified pharmacy technician, and promethazine w/codeine is not OVER-THE-COUNTER. However, promethazine (plain) is available at some pharmacies OTC. Anything with codeine in it is a CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, which requires a prescription. So, the next time you post something, you may want to get your facts straight.

Sleep Apnea is a sleeping disorder. That's when the person stops breating while they are asleep. A person can't get that ***. That's something that's developed either from a young age, or when a person is severly overweight (There are other factors, but those 2 are the most common). Codeine is prescribed by a doctor, and isn't available OTC. Any real doctor would not prescibe Codeine to a person with any such disorder. The only logical explanation is that *** C was a Type 1 Diabetic and simply did not know. Cough syrup not approved for diabetics has a letal amount of sugar that could kill you.

Captain Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County coroner's office says Monday that 33-year-old Chad Butler suffered from sleep apnea and his condition reacted badly with codeine-containing cough medicine he took. Butler's body was found in a West Hollywood hotel room in December. Winter says the levels of promethazine and codeine cough syrup in the rapper's system "were not that of an overdose."
Winter said the 33-year-old Port Arthur native didn't die of an overdose or from the direct effects of the drug.
"(Butler) was a big man - a little overweight - it looks like he took his medication, his respiratory slowed down, then with the sleep apnea, he just went to sleep and didn't wake up," he said.

Several news outlets have been reporting Houston rapper *** C died as a result of an 'overdose' of cough syrup. That's not actually the case. The Insite spoke directly with the assistant county coroner in Los Angeles and was the first to break the story. Ed Winter did not say *** C died of a drug overdose. I asked the question point blank - 'was it a drug overdose' and Winter said no. He said it was a deadly mix of Promethazine/Codeine, additional unknown issues, and a pre-existing medical condition called sleep apnea. Now here's the problem - a person who has sleep apnea frequently stops breathing while they sleep. In some cases a person can go up to a minute without breathing with the illness. Here's problem number #2 - Promethazine/Codeine may cause severe and sometimes fatal breathing problems...Those who have sleep apnea are warned not use the cough medication. The two make a deadly mix. So while syrup has become a part of the rap culture and *** C even rapped about it, his death wasn't the result of an overdose but a deadly mix of the purple stuff with his current condition. Mr. Winter said he did not attribute *** C aka Chad Butler's death to an OVERDOSE BUT AN ACCIDENTAL DEATH AND THE DEADLY MIX OF THE RAPPERS CONDITION AND THE COUGH SYRUP!
