Verdine has always looked and acted freaky to me. He can play that bass though. WTH is he wearing? He's married but that doesn't mean a thing today. He is Maurice White's brother but they look nothing alike.
Nick Ashford is married too but I've had questions abut that brother for years with his scary looking contacts.
As it's already been said, I'll just echo it, Maurice White for the most part, save a song from Phillip Bailey every now then, was the lead singer.
Believe it or not folks, there was a time when male black entertainers dressed quite flamboyantly but were as straight as a pencil, times have changed and I'm definitely advocating that Mr. White above is straight, but this is just a culture clash. 25 years ago there were many heterosexual men seen in videos with wigs, lipstick and such, it was just part of the times. Could you imagine what people would be saying about Rick James right now? ***, he was the manliest of them all with his wigs and tight sequin jumpsuits. This is no different than the barrage of hoodie wearing, timbaland rockin, blunt smokin R&B singers of today, they all fit one mold, there wasn't a mold back then, there were thug-like personas, there were smooth silk *** loverboy personas and there was very feminine personas, the point remains the same: they were all getting more trim than the guys who rush to call them ***. That's the problem with black folks nowadays, scared to experiment and think out the box.

Thank you!!
ummmm o.***. I really don't feel like picking no arguments so Im just gonna call it a difference of opinion...but im understanding the "mold" idea but call it what it is. That *** is extremly ***. PERIOD. If it walks like a duck looks and quacks like a duck then it is SOME VARIATION of a duck. If he *** so what...thats on him, but lets not act like it's just some expression of taste. Rick James, Lil richard, lilwayne (*** thug), eddie murphy ALL may very well get lots of women but they all prob go both ways. You can express yourself without cross dressing and wearing lipstick. Once you cross certain lines stop playing and call it what it is. ***. That don't make me narrow minded...just a realist.
Jason W...no disrespect but.... It makes NOOOOOO sense. OMG...throw some big words around and people cease to think for themselves. Marvin *** wore the tightest of tight pants! That *** was a culture clash cause it looks fruity as hell now but back then he was the epitome of sexy. This dude is flippn FLAMING..PERIOD! He was flaming back then and he's flaming now. There was a such thing as *** MEN back in the 60's and 70's. Lawd have mercy!
See that let's us all know how sill the people at MTO are.
HE HAS ALWAYS WORN his HAIR LONG - and HE HAS always worn way out clothes.
See...back in the day when folks were ROCK STARS They dressed in WILD Clothes like this.
Rather than a football jersey and a T-***. ROCK STARS and REAL MUSICIANS - WORE - FUNKY CLOTHES (not smelly) IT WAS HIP THEN, and HE IS COOL NOW.
SHAME ON YOU MTO.... VERDINE WHITE is the BOMB.
He is one Bad A** BASS PLAYER
@sosincere
No one is disputing that there were *** in the 60's and 70's, I do respectfully get your point.
My problem is the quantum leap to *** we take as black people because of our failure to think outside the box (no pun intended LOL).
Black people are the first to scream racism yet we as people are the biggest *** on the planet (no I'm not equating *** rights to civil rights). White people, yes whites, are more accepting of *** than we are! We have some inherit fear of catching *** from them or something, it's quite stupid.
I know what I am as man, I love the smell, the feel and the taste of a woman and I have no problems with *** whatsoever. I am a "live and let live" kind of person.
So Mr. White just may be as fruity as an energy drink, but I'm not ready to label him *** based on outward appearance because we all know, there are some very "manly-thugged-out" self-hating *** men walking the streets.
Just one humble man's opinion.
brutal.... Thank you sooo much for the repectful manner in which you disagreed with me. You know we ALWAYS got to put a disclaimer up when disagreeing because you can be verbally attacked on here..lol. But understand what you are saying. WE are extremely *** as a people which I think leads to the ramped "down low" ish. Assumptions do make ***'s out of folks but I just think that there is a point where we can quit assuming. Mr. White has past that mark...lol. But I agree 100% on the judging by appearances thing. It's more in action. Cause there are ALOT of super thugged out *** men walking around!!!! But you have to admit...it took a hell of alot of "action" for Verdine to get that swagger like that....lol. Imagine his prep time in the morning!
Not only is he not trying to be a woman, Verdine White (Brother of founder Maurice) has ALWAYS looked like this. He has/had a wife and kids back in the 70's when the group started. Maurice was the lead singer earlier on, then Philip Bailey (the high pitched voice) started leading most songs when Maurice stopped touring.
I went backstage and met Verdine after a concert, cool LAID BACK dude. He has always been something of an eccentric. Tell me something new MTO!
Actually he gave me a great hair tip. I was like DAG, how you keep your hair so shiney and bouncy after dancing around the stage like Spongebob for 2 hours...."Lots of conditioner ladies." THere it is! From Verdine's mouth himself!
Yes MTO...the lead singer was a man. Unfortunately, NOT THIS MAN! Philip Bailey & Maurice White were the lead singers, NOT this guy!
MTO, as usual, you aimed and tearing somebody apart and fell ***. I don't know what's funnier...this guy in a dress, or the fact that you're quick to call Beyonce stupid, when it appears you're not too bright either. *** shame....Black History Month, and you flunked your Earth Wind & Fire quiz.
Ok, we get it by now that Verdine is not the lead singer of EWF!!!!! With all the posts saying that, it's as if we don't know the man. We all know that Verdine's hair has been straight however, I've never seen him in a skirt, Italian blouse and pearls.
@Naomi: I must've missed that generation. I never remember a time where men dressed up as women. Never. Society was much more strict back then than it is today and if a man dressed like that he would've been ostracized by all.
That's one of the reasons why Billy Tipton, who was really Dorothy Tipton, had to hide her identity and dress as a man to fool people. Genders and their roles were clearly identified back then. The public didn't play that.
As you can tell by my screen name, which I have had for years now, I am an Earth Wind and Fire fan.
The lead singer is Maurice White.
Verdine is his brother who plays guitar.
His hair has been like that for a very loooonnng time now since he grew out his afro.
Get it right, MTO...

You know what....MTO you can talk about any of these wack groups out here but when it comes to EW&F I gots to draw the line! I'm not going to say the same thing that everyone else has been saying but I believe you are revealing your age if you don't know the history behind EW&F. Before Maurice White even founded the group he was a drummer for a jazz group. Verdine was playing long before EWF. He only joined the group for his brother Maurice. There was also another brother who played the drums in the group. Verdine has always been Verdine and I love him just as he is.....Back up off da man!!!!
*** out to prettyaseyes2008 for your message:
{TOO FUNNY!! AND HE'S MARRIED TO ONE OF THE YOUNG SISTERS FROM THE GROUP JC..THEY SANG ICE-CREAM. THE OTHER SISTER IS MARRIED TO RONALD ISLEY..SOUNDS LIKE THESE SISTERS KNOW MONEY WHEN THEY SEE IT :) }
Philip Bailey (not Verdine White) is married to the older sister of the ladies of JS .....
I don't give a DAMNNNN about what homie got on....all I want to know is WHO does his perm? That ain't no *** Dark & Lovely or no Africa's Best up in there! That's some Bantu!! Remember that perm ladies? Burn your scalp off, but your hair came out just right...light and fluffy, shiny and every strand in place. Do you boy!
Wow...um...wow. Is that a Skirt? um..wow...okay something nice to say...something nice...oh..uh Nice hair?

jorundi...THANK YOU for stating the facts about Verdine and EWF.
I know Verdine and EWF personally, and I'd like to add a few more facts regarding Verdine and EWF. Earth Wind & Fire's Bass Player Verdine White has been married to Shelly, a member of the '70 group "Honey Cone" for over 25 years. He is deffienetly not ***! Verdine has always dressed flamboyantly...he is just being Verdine, he's not trying to look like anyone else. Verdine is a very intelligent, kind man and he and his wife does a lot for young people through their foundation. Verdine is the FIRE onstage...he's not only a great Bassist, but a great entertainer onstage.
And by the way, the other man in the pictures is Ralph Johnson. He sings, plays drums and is a founding member of EWF.
Please, next time you pass judgement on someone...get your facts right.
One of my best and life-long friends is the son of an original member of Earth, Wind & Fire, and as such I also know all these guys personally. Its so sad that some of you would disrespect Verdine! He is not only a legendary bassist and one of the greatest performers who's ever graced a stage, but he's also one of the nicest and most genuine men I've ever met. He's not ***. He's not a woman. He has lived a life that none of you could even imagine, and he's done it his own way, with his own style, with no concern for the small minded few who judge the way he's looked for 40 years, and all the while remained more humble and down to earth than any of you ignorant morons.
