i'll never forget one of my close friends since we were little i was able to make her cry (i know i was a horrible friend then i guess) just by telling her she was black...she would cry (literally, tears and all) and swear she's not black, she's dominican...but she made djimon look light skinned...(ok, well not that dark, but she still was not what people typically say "dominicans" look like).
i remember telling my mom that when i was young and not understanding because my dad's father was one of the darkest men i knew but he was born in DR and my family always identified itself as plain black (well from my dad's mom's side they claimed the Native American real hard, but that's cuz we still have fam that live on the reservations) so i was confused as hell at why my friend didn't think she was black.
it wasn't until i got older that i saw that there are people of AFRICAN DESCENT in just about every country but they don't consider themselves black and just cuz they seem that way to us (plain black folk---if there is such a thing...) doesn't mean that they identify with this and can or should be labeled so.
