: MediaTakeOut.com has learned that actor Robert Downey Jr will be playing a Black man in his new film. Here's how Entertainment weekly is describing the new flick.
In Tropic Thunder, an epic action comedy co-written and directed by Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. plays Kirk Lazarus, a very serious Oscar-winning actor cast in the most expensive Vietnam War film ever. Problem is, Lazarus's character, Sgt. Osiris, was originally written as black. So Lazarus decides to dye his skin and play Osiris, um, authentically. Funny? Sure. Dangerous? That's an understatement. ''If it's done right, it could be the type of role you called Peter Sellers to do 35 years ago,'' Downey says. ''If you don't do it right, we're going to hell.''We're not sure about this one....... Stiller says that he and Downey always stayed focused on the fact that they were skewering insufferable actors, not African-Americans. ''I was trying to push it as far as you can within reality,'' Stiller explains. ''I had no idea how people would respond to it.'' He recently screened a rough cut of the film and it scored high with African-Americans. He was relieved at the reaction. ''It seems people really embrace it,'' he says.
ok this is sketchy.
@euduhs: i know that the Wayans Bros movie was pretty much "white face" and i really wasn't feeling the concept of them doing that, but there is a history in this country of white people masquerading as blacks in efforts to perpetuate negative stereotypes and to encourage racism and bigotry. it may rub people the wrong way to see this, even if it's done tastefully.
i dunno... angelina jolie recently played the part of a black woman and it caused a lot of controversy. i wasn't really that blown because the woman she was portraying was very fair skinned so all they had to do was put a curly wig on her head. but blackface?
it kinda makes my stomach hurt to see that...
Ummm, The Wayans Brothers played white women in White Chicks. Anyway, the movie is about a movie where a white man played a black man in a movie. (confusing, I know). If MTO read the description correctly, they would have picked that up. A white man had to play the role. That's the way the movie went. MTO is always pulling out that race card. It's not that serious.
Listen people........A black man couldn't play the role. The movie is about a man portraying an actor in another movie. In that movie the role of RDJr's Character was written for a black man.
"Problem is, Lazarus's character, Sgt. Osiris, was originally written as black. So Lazarus decides to dye his skin and play Osiris, "
The role called for a white man playing a black man. In this movie, they are remaking another movie. The character that RDJr is playing had to be a white man.
Okay, he looks like a black man. BUT WAS IT REALLY THAT HARD TO FIND A AUTHENTIC BLACK MAN, OR AT LEAST BI-RACIAL TO PLAY THE ROLE??? I mean they rarely, actually they have no black actors that played white. This just shows RACISM is alive and well fed!!! It pis*es me off because how many black actors are available or would like to do that, and they need a BLANCO to do it ? It's like saying,"A black man isn't good enough to play himself so let's get a white person." White people already get most of the scripts and best roles anyways. I don't think I will be supporting this ***. NEXT! And Freddie, send this message to Hollywood for me!

THANK YOU for proving yourselves to be among the numerous idiots who frequent MTO. NOW all you have to do is go back and READ the article. Let me help you out about what to look for... "Robert Downey Jr. plays Kirk Lazarus, a very serious Oscar-winning actor cast in the most expensive Vietnam War film ever. Problem is, Lazarus's character, Sgt. Osiris, was originally written as black. So Lazarus decides to dye his skin and play Osiris, um, authentically."
IT IS A MOVIE WITHIN A MOVIE!!!!
OMG!!!
SEE NOTHING WRONG WITH IT???
True enough that he does look authentically black and not like a white guy in blackface, BUT...
With all these strugglin black actors out here trying to catch a break...he couldn't choose from one of them???
So not only can black actors NOT get the "white roles", but they can't even get the BLACK ones either???
WHAT THA HELL?!?!
Not that serious MTO. He plays a white actor who dyes his skin black for a part. I see nothing wrong with it. People read everything as racism. Honestly, if someone of another rece doesn't get up for you on the train they racist. I was cracking up just from that ***... lol. May wait until it comes on DVD. This movie is gonna be hilarious
Wow! Now if he really wants to make a breakthrough movie, he should take himself in make up and go frequent all the places he usually goes to for dining, clubs, bars, shopping, parks, etc. and see what life is like as a black man and *** everything that happens and how it makes him feel. I bet he'd get the shock of his life.
*** some of you are either really stupid or didn't read the post. If you just read the headline it says Robert plays a black man but as the article says, he plays a white man who has to play a black man in a movie. This isn't anyworse than White Chicks or any of the Character's Eddie Murphy has done. This actually seems like it will be more tasteful. I'm sure they would have got a black man to play a black man if that was the charecter, but its not so stop ***.
If the movie is tastefully done, then it might be decent. And I think the whole point of the movie is a white man portraying a black man. So naturally, they have to cast a white man for the part. How about WHITE CHICKS? Remember that? The Wayans brothers were acting some *** fools..lol Anyway,It's all about the delivery and what they're trying to convey in the film. As I always say, we shall see...
OH WOW!!!!!!!!!...all the black actors out there and they had to have a white male play it? Blacks can't have nothn, can we? Okay, so maybe the Wayans Bros did white chicks...SO THE HELL WHAT?? White folks been doin black face for so many years, what does one little movie about white girls have on all the racist, hateful and hurtful movies that WHITES have done in black face. It isn't right, no matter which uncle toms or white folks think its not a big deal!
