Just because Vogue is a reputable magazine doesn't mean that it isn't racist. How many people of color are on the editorial staff at Vogue? None, that I know of. Forget the cover, flip through their fashion editorials, and you'll be hard pressed to find any models of color at all, let alone black models. It's usually page after page of white models. The last time they had a black model on the cover, she (Chanel Iman) was on the inside flap with a bunch of other white girls. This is the second time in as many years that a black celebrity was photographed for the cover of that magazine, with mouth ajar, in an unflattering pose.

I try not to sit back and obsess over racism. I dont want my mind to be overtaken my negative thoughts or always feeling like our people are being victimized or portrayed in an animalistic light, but this image is definitely surving a purpose. I had to come back to this thread because this has probably been one of the most thoughtful discussions on this board in a long time. I looked at the picture again it still just doesn't sit well with me. Even if they were juxataposing what each of them does best professional, the way they set the picture up still looks suspect. My conspiracy theory switch might have been flipped, but look at Gisele's body language. They could of have selected a more demure pose for her, maybe one of her leaning into Lebron. Instead, her body is pulled away from him. She has a smile on her face but her stance is one of slight repulsion. (Think about how you stand when I stank dude approaches you in the club and tries to whisper in your ear, that's the exact pose she has.) Then look at the placement of her feet. It's as if she's in mid-flight, trying to flee from him. Hell it looks like he caught her in mid-run. People want to act like racism doesn't exist, but it's still alive and kicking. Just because the white man knows not to call you a ni@@a to your face, it doesn't mean he's not thinking it behind closed doors. (And while that may not have been the express purpose of the photo editors, I still find their choice of picture highly suspicious.)

What about writing our mayors and congressperson about the illiteracy of our black children? What about the fact that they're more black single mothers because either the women ain't [EXPLETIVE] or the black man ain't responsible enough or simply man enough to raise a child? It takes a man to raise a man but it takes a woman to make a man. What about the black on black crime that still plagues our communities and the black leadership is nowhere to be found because their busy buying bling and rims and other bullsh**? We make ourselves looks like fools and idiots and the white people are more than happy to record and broadcast all over the world. We never stop to think what kind of message are we sending or what image we are proposing. YES this picture is subliminal racism but this isn't the first time and it ain't gon be the last. All this picture is doing is getting your time and mind off what's REALLY important and that is focusing our attention on REAL issues that affects us all. The name of the game is trying to stay alive while making your mark on the world by giving back, staying humble and repair years and years of of black people's hurt, pain, shame, dispair and displacement. It's time we take care of ourselves and elavate our thinking as well as our knowlegde.
