: ATLANTA (AP) — A former math professor at a historically black university goes on trial Monday in Atlanta, charged with arranging the contract killing of his black daughter-in-law because she wasn't Indian.
As prosecutors prepare to try the death penalty case against Chiman Rai, their challenge will be to prove that Rai was so enraged over his son's marriage to a black woman that he paid $10,000 to have her killed in Georgia.
Rai, a native of India, brought his family to the U.S. in 1970. He taught math at Alcorn State University in Mississippi, later ran a supermarket and then bought a hotel in Louisville, Ky., where he hired Sparkle Michelle Rai as a clerk.
She fell in love with his son, Ricky, and the two were wed. Prosecutors say Chiman Rai paid two brothers $10,000 to kill his son's wife.
In April 2000 Sparkle Rai was found stabbed and strangled in her apartment in Union City, Ga. just steps away from her 7-month-old daughter, who was unharmed.
Rai's defense attorney did not immediately return calls for comment Friday, but he has insisted in court that his client is innocent. At a bond hearing in 2006, defense attorney Mike McDaniel called Rai "as stable of a person as you're going to find."
The case went unsolved until two witnesses came forward in 2004 and identified Cleveland Clark as the killer.
According to a 2006 indictment, Rai teamed up with Willie Fred Evans to serve as middlemen, and they soon passed the money to brothers Cleveland and Carl Clark .
Carl Clark drove the pair to Georgia from Mississippi and Cleveland Clark carried out the killing, prosecutors say.

Indians for the most part are very "proud" people and no, they do not accept interracial marriage in their family. And they also have strong feelings towards their own kinds in terms of color. Most times you will see a dark skin Indian man with a lighter skin Indian woman, but not vice versa. I'm not suprised the father would be against his son marrying a black girl- especially a store clerk. He probably didnt envision that when he brought his family over from India. No excuse for killing her. And a black family would be more willing( for the most part) to have an Indian marry into their family, then an Indian family a black person into their family ( regardles of their stature).

Through my travels and experiences in the world, I found out a while back that Indian (not all) people are VERY racist against blacks!
They have an extreme disdain 4 our culture (or lack thereof) and principles!
I found it shocking and disturbing initially being that they are people of color. However, they DO NOT in ANY way associate themselves with us!

To put it simple and plain. A lot of Indian people still believe in the ancient caste system from their country which is largely based on birth right and wealth. If you have taken a sociology course, then you know that America operates on a racially based caste system. So they perceive Americans of African descent as the bottom of the totem pole or lowest of the low. I've even had an Indian friend tell me his parents don't care who she dates as long as he is not black. It's *** up but some people still choose to live in ignorance today. Plus look at all the negative images of us projected all over the world in 2008 and some of that *** is coming form our us!!! real talk.

I had a Vietnamese youth whose father was livid when he found out she was dating a black classmate; even threw a vase on the floor.
Another youth I know, was of Chinese (mom)/Caucasian (father) ancestry and her mother was adamant that she not date anyone black. That woman made the nastiest comments when that girl dated anyone black.
It's not just being black that has these fathers livid, it's the fact that they're involved with someone outside of their race.
A local Muslim had his own daughter killed after she dated a black man. He said she brought shame on the family. Same thing in the Middle East. A woman who is raped is killed by her family.
And Native Americans, yes Indians, are among the the worst. A few years ago a young lady won a beauty title her mom (Native American) and father (black). The Native Americans were livid because she was mixed and didn't own her or the title she won. You'd think with the way Native Americans have been treated in this country they'd have a totally different perspective about the races.

In MOST marriage situations, people prefer their sons and daughters with their own people. That's just human nature. This is not strange to me. Indians are notorious for setting wives on fire and killing them if they are not obedient, suspected of cheating or disespectful to their husband's mother. Granted in all situations it is never all, but it is a reality in Indian culture, to save face and honour in the family is paramount. Hell they kill their own children all the time.

One time, I saw this very dark Indian cab driver go INSANE towards a *** cab driver who was just sitting in his cab. The Indian was screaming the ***-Word, so loud and often, it was ridiculous. In my opinion, history can be very skeptical. I dont blame a ethniticity to want to stay with their own bc of values and or norms. The statistics they put out always mess people up. It pretty much works like this: say 1,000,000 whites have AIDS in the US compared to 500,000 blacks. Now say there are 175,000,000 whites and 40,000,000 blacks in the US, the statistics make it look like there are more blacks(1.25%) with AIDS than whites(0.6%), eventhough there are actually more whites with the disease than blacks. The truth is that even in 2008, the majority of cultures are still not accepting of interracial relationships (or even darker skinned of the same race). In some Middle Eastern cultures, males can kill their female relatives who simply disrespect the family with little or no punishment. It is more prevalent that you may think. Unfortunately, it usually only makes news if it happens here.

Firstly, i'm Trinidadian and if u know anyting about my country is that the two major races are east indians and blacks.Indians have been in the West Indies since the late 1800s right after the abolition of slavery. I've lived all my life amongst indian ppl and so i know them to the core. I've had countless indian best frens and to this day i have indian frens who will go to the ends of the earth to help me if i needed it. but what ppl don't understand is that indian culture is very complex as not only race is involved here but the caste system as well. A man of a higher caste CANNOT marry a low caste girl and vice versa..he/she or both would be tossed out/ killed. Now i'm not saying that race realtions bet. blks and indians are always perfect in Trinidad but like a quater of the population is mixed. wat we would call a dougla but really means *** in hindi as in d early days. An indian can admire the blk race i.e teach in a blk school and still not want a member of his family to marry blk as they would fall below the lowest caste, the untouchables. I agree there is no excuse and i will not defend him but i must pt. out that in this man's eyes he was restoring his family honor. Note the baby his own flesh and blood was not killed.
I am a punjabi Indian and I think this is terrible thing this idiot did, but when you take actions of one crazy person and generalize to every indian as being the same then you are being a racist. Racism exists in all cultures and colors of people. Whites had slavery, blacks are racist against darker blacks. More whites are serial killers. Prison's have 50 % blacks, remainder are made up of whites and spanish people. There are white and black and other nationalities that kill wifes, kids and random drive by ***. but you idiots have the nerve of seeing one example of someone doing something wrong and generalizing to all indians. most indians are the nicest people on earth. sure there are some stuptid ones, but aren't there in every race. how often do you see indians in the news breaking the law and how many indians do you see in the prison systems. Most of you people who are posting here are clueless and are racists. By the way, Indians and Muslims are totally different people. Muslim is related to Christianity. it is near where white people live. near Isreal. quit confusing indians with Muslims. its like saying Chinese and white people are the same because they both have fair skin.
If you read the article, you will see that the people who committed the murder were Cleaveland and Carl Clark. Two Black men. so Can I assume that all black men are murderers and killers. Also can I assume all white men are serial killers and rapists, because I we see that on the news all the time. You cannot generalize the entire race by the actions of one carzy person. Earlier I read few articles of teen agers hiring hit men to kill their parents, or mothers killing their babies who were all white. Honestly ask your self who is being a racist here.
