What she said about not being able to relate to the day to day struggles of African America IS true!! Bill Cosby was worth $300 MILLION dollars in the 80's. When I was in school, having parents with a "little" money (compared to Bill Cosby, it was DEFINITELY little) but when compared to most of the black people I knew, we were rich - and black folk gave me hell too, so I was forced to socialize with people who lived in my neighborhood, went to my school and those people just happened to be WHITE - I was *** near grown when I started hanging out with black people.

I have said this before and hopefully people will start to understand, there is not one definition of black culture. And many peeople try to call you out as not black if you don't talk hip-hop or slang. Those people define being that as being black and talkign black. It's not.
Again, put it in context and try to understand that our realities are not always the same. So is what we are exposed to.
She has a point, but it should be the other way around. It's not that regular black folk can't relate to her, it's that she can't relate to "regualar" black folk.
Her parents' decision to send her to private schools was a CHOICE. There are tons of "privileged" black folk who still choose to send their children to public schools and ensure that both they & their priviliged children get exposed to regular black folk on a regular basis.

Just recently i was at work talking on my BlackBerry and one of the black dudes said i looked like a "Sophisticated white girl". My brother gets clowned on at school because he wears his pants at his waist with a belt. But mind you, Those same people that told me that are now statistics (multiple kids from multiple partners, in jail, no job, living of the system). And notice at how i didn't specify race in that statement.
Nobody is trying to be like somebody else. Regardless of what color you are or where you live, you could live in the *** hood for all you know, It's about your upbringing and how your parents raised you. My mother taught me and my younger brother to read as soon as we was able to talk. Me and my brother attended private schools, But we both made the choice around the same age to start attending public school (the public school i went to had better programs than the private school for some reason). Some folks crack me up!! I speak correctly, but I find no need to put others on blast who doesn't. Only privlileged black folks feel the need to express that they are privileged. @Trooper (go jigga) we usaully are on the same page of music but I disagree there is a proper way to speak english and a wrong way. There are also many dialects. Slang isn't a dialect. It uses words that are thought up by people who are not scholars. that is why they don't stick and everyone doesn't use them. It sounds like pig latin to someone outside of that realm. If you only speak slang you can only communicate inside your realm. Since our realm doesn't write the dictionary the words we use in ebonics are improper english. It also goes against our language sentence structure (double negatives, misspronounciation, etc...
The diffrent dialects come from immigrants who don't use english as a first language. The rolling of the 'R' and the cases where the lack of the 'r' is present.
So technically no it isn't proper english. Amercan english is a dialect of Oxford english So technically it is a language. Poeple from all over the world learn it. It probably started out like ebonics ( I hate that word) but eventually became our countries language.

My family was pretty wealthy and I did grow up in all-white neighborhoods, just like she did, because the places where we lived did not HAVE an upper-class black neighborhood for us to live in. My parents were more focused on the quality of education that I would get as opposed to which race of people I went to school with.
When I did meet other black people, I had experiences similar to hers- they told me that I "talked" white because my parents never let us use slang growing up, and because even as a child I had almost perfect diction and grammar. Black kids I met made fun of me for not being "black enough" and white kids made fun of me BECAUSE I was black. When I went to college, instead of congratulating me other black people were very nasty to me. Through my own very hard work, I became a lawyer at age 24 and all I got was hate from my own community. However, unlike many other people I know, as a lawyer I am giving back to the black community by working as a public defender and volunteering in community service project here in Philly.
Growing up black in a white neighborhood is a very difficult life ands I do sympathize with her; however, she also sounds like a snob who thinks she is better than other people. It's hard to feel bad for someone who clearly doesn't want to associate with others not of her "class."
I wasn't offended by her comments. I too grew up in Private Schools/Magnet Schools as well and I use to get teased about "talking white" all of the time. Its not talking white its speaking standard English so to each its own. If you want to talk in slang terminology then thats on you. Bottom line you *** be judged either way but I think she was just comparing herself to the stereotypical black person and not degrading blacks in general. And to those saying she's not a Doctor or Lawyer what does that have to do with the price of tea in china ? Not everyone wants to be affiliated with those professions. Maybe she is successful with her boutique, I mean she is her own boss at least. BTW I did manage to graduate from FISK University (Double major) with academic honors in Comp Sci and Bus Admin and I have Oracle certification(s) and Real Estate License(s) as well....

I grew as a middle class kid, and for *** sure cant relate to someone who grew up all private schools, with famous, millionaire parents.

I agree with what she is saying. I dont think she was putting people on blast. I think she was pointing out how judgemental blacks can be if you come across as different in some way. You have to be honest, black people tend to accuse other blacks of trying to be white when you are using proper enunciation instead of country grammar or slang all the time. I read the article in a NY paper and I don't think she meant it like that. She's saying she was raised in a privileged environment and people who don't or can't connect with that want to label the people as "elitist". I've had my share of hearing that.
Some people think once you get a car, home and good job and aren't still on their level they want to say you think you're "better" than everybody. You'll notice the people saying it are still in the same spot you left them in 10 yrs ago. It's a defense mechanism for their failure.
Obama grew up poor and so did his wife. They've achieved much and have given much after graduating from Harvard. They don't even appear elitist to me. I found his comments about angry, *** guns and religion to be so true, especially in the rural white areas.
If someone says you're talking "white" then they have no etiquette and don't seem to have any worldly exposure outside of their communities. I consider that a social problem for them, not me.
And for people to misunderstand what this woman is trying to say, they fall into that "you talk white" category. Give me a break. People say relate to your own people. Who are your people? I can't relate to all blacks because we have various upbringings. Many have kept their inferiority complexes right where they got them, at home and in their communities.
I think she hit it on the head as far as being privileged. But what comes along with privilege is a blindfold, a blindfold to reality. It works the same way with white privilege.
When someone is privileged, someone else is not. That's like saying you can have an up without a down. It's funny because this society uses the word under privileged yet we never hear over privilege.
As a race of people, we inflict all kinds of "isms" on each other. We suffer from internalized classism (which is what this is) racism (there is a lot of complexion talk that goes on, even tday) sexism (much of hip hop:guilty), ***, weight discrimination - the list goes on. What's the point of all this? People from the same community can have vastly different experiences than their next door neighbors. Enid's brother experienced a violent death - something some people would say is a common occurrence in the "ghetto." And what fuggitaboutit said about her and that 40oz in Soul Kitchen I totally believe because its somewhat common knowledge that Enid had a serious drug problem some time ago. Serious. On top of that, even more common knowledge that Bill has a notorious reputation of being a huge womanizer in Hollywood. My point is, regardless of how much money and privilege you were born with does not automatically immune you from low-life behavior and experiences.

There is race and there is social class....Now granted there are certain shared experiences on racial lines, but depending on what your class line is (below the poverty line, middle class, wealthy) you can have entirely different experiences, upbring, etc....That is just reality no matter what race people are. A white person from a trailer park in Appalachia is not going to have the same experiences as a person who grows up privileged in the suburbs of Orange County. Same applies to all people. It is what it is.
Now there are some negroes who get a degree, morgage and car note and feel like that entitles them to talk *** about, talk down to and disrespect other black people who haven't made it rather than reaching out and helping...That siddity element certainly exists in our community...But based on the statement posted I would not place her in that category.

1) If you use profanity and slang all the time, that's how you were taught to speak and that's probably how you were spoken to.

Her statements were NOT shocking & were similar to what a privileged daughter of a super wealthy WHITE family would reveal in comparison to common White folks... if asked. But, 1 problem is, Whites in the upper crust are EXPECTED to communicate well; articulate & enunciate. When Blacks are well spoken, "they're trying to be 'somebody else'!" Ridiculous!
MTO also alluded to Mr. Cosby's statements of several years ago when he publicly spoke out against a dilemna whereby Blacks were not embracing education & achieving as well as other races or ethnicities. True, Mr. Cosby should have refrained from ridiculing Blacks whose chidrens' names often end in "qua". That statement seemed opinionated & thoughtless. Yet, the entire context of Mr. Cosby's speech should NOT be taken lightly! I'll admit that she should have picked and chosen her words carefully, especially when she stated her 'privileged' comment. I'm sure she knows that came out all wrong, given the backlash she's receiving.
But in a way I understand what she means. If she didn't grow up around ghetto mentalities, then why should she have that mentality just because she's black? All black people are not going to have the same qualities, act the same way or speak the same way. She can't help how she was raised. Her parents wanted the best for her.

I, too, went to private schools and was very priveleged in that my parents provided all the material things I could ever want but most importantly they taught me morals, values and NOT to look down on others who were less fortunate than us. Some of the most treasured relationships I've developed over my 36 years have been based on character... not whether someone was born with a silver spoon in their mouth. I can't exactly relate to her because I grew up in the hood but I do understand what she's saying about the urban slang we use. I was bused from the hood to the suburbs during my early/late teens (METCO). So thankfully I was exposed to the other side of the railroad tracks and got to see how the upper class lived and carried themselves. I knew the differences between both, I could NOT come back to the hood speaking as though I was talking to Rebecca Fitzgerald. It's the same with people from the Caribbean, they know how and when to turn their accents on and off. That's a skill many black people have not mastered yet.
When I graduated from high school, I was so glad to be done with white people and I IMMEDIATELY applied to an HBCU. That had to have been to biggest rude awakening I ever had. Everybody, and I mean everybody I spoke to asked where I was from and told me I sounded like a white girl.
My Mom made a comment a few weeks ago, as a matter of fact, she said "I'd rather my kids be white-washed in the suburbs, then end up statistics in the hood".

This girl is buggin. Even though I was raised in the hood it does not mean I do not know how to speak to others. She talks out of the side of her neck just like her father. why are we so quick to get offended. you are right it doesnt matter where you went to school in order to learn to speak correct english. i didnt grow up rich, and i get called out saying i talk like a white girl too, but when im with my friends i also know how to let my hair down and not worry about if this is being pronounced correctly. I work in a professional environment and i have for 15 years and i learned a few things and just like moma says "there is a time and a place for everything". but we can't get offended by her comments because everyone does not know how anyone lives unless you know them and we all know "rich" people be in their own world, you can't get mad at her for that. Some make it and some don't. But you have to admit it has gotten ridiculous with our generation and its our fault!! Everyone i know my age has a 16 year old know and they are the ones out here cursing, sagging, robbing, but dressing..so WE have failed them. Bottom line. We all need to woman up and man up and just take our own whooping. Bill didn't air our laundry, hell we did. We are by letting our children behave this way and wanting to get mad at someone when they call us out on it. It's almost as if we are condoning it, and STILL not trying to do better, because we know better. But in her world, she probably DIDNT go to shchool with very many black children, they probably DID speak correct English.
