: EIJING (AP) — A few fun-loving fresh faces have suddenly turned Jamaica into the "World's Fastest Nation."
And that supposed U.S. track and field juggernaut? Well, things aren't quite going to plan.
Right fist thrust overhead as she crossed the finish line all alone, silver braces shining in the Bird's Nest lights as she hopped in celebration like the 21-year-old she is, little-known Shelly-Ann Fraser won the women's 100 meters Sunday night in 10.78 seconds to help make these Olympics a sweeping success for the Caribbean island.
Fraser was followed across the line, steps later, by teammates Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart, who both finished in 10.98 and both collected silvers — giving Jamaica the first sweep of medals in a women's 100 by any nation at any Olympics or world championships.
That impressive display came one day after Usain Bolt's easy-as-could-be, hot-dogging, record-breaking victory in the men's 100 — giving Jamaica the first sweep of men's and women's 100 golds at any Olympics since 1988.
While the Jamaicans made it look so easy, it was excruciating to watch Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang as he attempted to run in the final preliminary heat of Monday morning's 110-meter hurdles.
Seen limping and kicking the wall in the warm-up room and grimacing on the track before the hurdlers even lined up, Liu limped out of the block at the starting gun, took a few awkward steps, then pulled up when the second gun sounded to signal a false start.
Liu, whose right hamstring has been bothering him for months, then tore the number off his leg, turned around and walked into the tunnel, his Olympic hopes — and the great hopes of his country — dashed before he ran a single race.
Just like that, his games were over.
Jamaica and Bolt are hoping they can extend their celebrating all week.
Back in his gold shoes Monday morning, Bolt advanced to the second round of the 200 by finishing second in his heat. He is trying to become the first man since Carl Lewis in 1984 to win gold medals in the 100 and 200 at the same Summer Games, so he surely was conserving energy.
So far, not a bad showing by a nation of 2.8 million, about the population of Chicago. Not bad for a nation that long has produced top sprinters but never an Olympic dash champion, man or woman, before this wonderful 2-for-2 weekend.
"I was speechless yesterday for a while. Today I cried," Jamaica's minister of sport, Olivia Grange, said Sunday, after watching Fraser win. "Little Jamaica — our country is blessed with some of the best, if not the best, talent you can find."
Now compare and contrast. The single 100 bronze for the United States, earned by Walter Dix, amounts to the country's worst combined showing in the men's and women's dashes at an Olympics since earning zero medals in the 100 at both the 1980 Moscow Games — where, let's remember, a boycott prevented any Americans from competing — and the 1976 Montreal Games.
"We've dominated for years, and now it's their time," said Lauryn Williams, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist and 2005 world champion — and one of three U.S. women who never mounted a challenge during Sunday's final.
"We're getting a pretty good taste of what it's like to be at the bottom," Williams said.
The United States protested the results in the women's 100, asking that the race be reviewed because of a possible false start by American Torri Edwards — who wound up last. The appeal was swiftly rejected, and the biggest consequence was that the Jamaican women would have to wait until Monday to receive their medals at a postponed ceremony.
Not that a ruling for the U.S. would have made much of a difference. The Jamaicans, particularly Fraser, were so much better that it's hard to imagine the outcome being much different if the race were run again.
It was all part of an all-around rough day for the Stars and Stripes, beginning in the morning, when U.S. record-holder and 2004 bronze winner Deena Kastor quit because of a broken right foot about three miles into the women's marathon won by Constantina Tomescu-Dita of Romania.
Then, in the men's 1,500 meters, two-time Olympic medalist Bernard Lagat, U.S. team flagbearer Lopez Lomong and NCAA champion Leo Manzano — all naturalized citizens making their Olympic debuts for their new country — failed to reach the final.
"I gave everything I had," said Lagat, who won a silver and bronze representing his native Kenya at the past two Summer Games.
There was more bad news when 2004 relay gold medalist Dee Dee Trotter and Mary Wineberg flopped in the women's 400 semifinals.
At least favorite Sanya Richards left everyone in her semifinal well behind by the halfway mark and coasted home in 49.90 seconds, the fastest time by nearly a quarter-second in any of the three heats.
Richards could be part of a stronger upcoming presence for the Americans, with the potential for a sweep in Monday's men's 400-meter hurdles.
Still, it'll be tough to top what Jamaica already has done — and make track and field at these Olympics be remembered as anything other than Jamaica's coming-out party, replete with reggae music echoing through the stadium.
Fraser called it a "crazy Bolt Effect."
Bolt talks about his love of dancing and preparing for the biggest moment of his life with a combination of TV watching, nap taking and chicken-nugget eating.
Fraser bared her braces with a wide, gee-whiz smile when her name was announced over the loudspeakers as the contestants waited to fold themselves into the starting blocks for the final. It was a striking contrast to the total lack of expression on the faces of Edwards and Williams.
Bolt and Fraser were both relatively unheralded in the individual 100 before this season. They also share an age — and now so much more.
Like Bolt, Fraser celebrated before her work was done, cocking her fist back over her shoulder and punching the air as she arrived at the finish line. Nothing on the scale of Bolt's arms-extended, palms-up, chest-slapping display, mind you, but an in-stride, in-race celebration nonetheless.
And, also like Bolt, Fraser won by a whopping two-tenths of a second, a significant margin in such a short race, and the largest in the women's Olympic 100 final since 1988, when Florence Griffith-Joyner broke the world record to win gold.
"When I was thinking about it, I was getting ahead of myself," Fraser said about clutching a gold medal. "I was like, 'Calm down. First you need to go out there and do it.'"
Her win came less than two hours after Bolt was back in the Bird's Nest to accept his medal for the 100.
Coming Friday is the final of the women's 400-meter relay, where the Jamaicans figure to be big favorites: Not only do they have the top three finishers in the individual 100, but now they get to add Veronica Campbell-Brown, the reigning world champion in the dash.
Campbell-Brown failed to qualify in the individual event at the Jamaican trials. Her spot essentially went to Fraser, who didn't have a 100 under 11.3 seconds on her resume before this year.
Back in Fraser's rough Kingston neighborhood, an area notorious for gang violence, people danced in the streets, banged pots together and waved their country's green-yellow-and-black flags.
"I can't wait," Fraser said, "to get home."
In other finals Sunday, Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele (men's 10,000 meters) and Cameroon's Francoise Mbango Etone (women's triple jump) successfully defended their titles from the 2004 Olympics.
Sileshi Sihine gave Ethiopia a 1-2 finish behind Bekele's new Olympic record, but two-time champion Haile Gebrselassie — who cited concerns about pollution in opting not to enter the marathon — finished sixth.
The second world record of the 10-day Olympic track meet came in the Olympic debut of the 3,000-meter women's steeplechase. Gulnara Galkina-Samitova of Russia became the first woman to go under 9 minutes and clipped more than 2 1/2 seconds off her own mark that had stood since July 2004, finishing in 8:58.81.
Galkina-Samitova smiled broadly as she covered the final 50 meters all alone.
Her reaction was nowhere near as exuberant as those of Bolt and Fraser, who appear to have just the sort of speed and personalities to help their sport overcome its recent doldrums.
Track's profile has declined in part due to a spate of drug cases, and Sunday brought word that reigning women's 400-meter hurdles champion Fani Halkia of Greece tested positive for a banned substance and will not defend her title.

They never attended US colleges or have US coaches, strickly Jamaican all the way. We are an island of 2.8 million people vs USA 300 million, yet wi not only compete but bust yuh rass. As for education and job opportunities, we will even go to Alaska to uplift ourselves. Afterall we were forced from the motherland, so why not explore on our own. For years USA coaches were coming to Jamaica's Girls and Boys Champs and also the Penn Relays to recruit Jamaican athletes for US colleges. Then the same Americans were complaining when we started beating them, saying that its because they taught us how to run. Now our present athletes have decided to stay home and train at one of our 2 main track clubs...MVP Track and High Performance Track clubs...and attend college in Jamaica. They have Jamaican coaches. Fraser and Simpson are from MVP and train with Stephen Francis, so is Asafa Powell, Michael Frater, Bridgett Foster- Hylton. Usain Bolt is trained by a Jamaican Coach at High Performance Track Club. Kerron Stewart, though she attends college in the USA is trained by a Bahamian. And get the fact straight, it was GOLD, SILVER and SILVER. The Americans protested to get a bronze and when that was throw out they tried to get the race invalidated by saying their athlete false started...when has the Americans ever admitted to a mistake. Just making every effort to save their ego. For years Jamaica has had to put up with drugged/ questionable athletes robbing them of medals. Just check the books in recent times and see how many of them are now found guilty or in prison like Marion. Merlene, Grace and Juliet had to settle for silver, bronze or nothing at all because of that. Now the testers have caught up with the cheats and we see the results of that. This is the age-old issue where some (not ALL) black Americans really feel they must put down blacks from the Caribbean.
Yes, Jamaicans were not brought to this country in chains, therefore we dont have the same baggage black Americans do. And Yes, our country has only been independent for a mere 40+years, unlike the US which has been independent for 200+ years. So our economy is wretched, our people are poor, and we depend on the kindness of tourists. Yes, there are GOATS in the country and chickens, and all kinds of animals.
But does all that mean we should NOT be ecstatic about our Athletes winning??

i'm guyanese and i have a 13 year old jr 3000m gold medalist , 1500 silver and 800 m 3 place runner and he eat well , during his track season he eats good food , yam , plantains , cassava, eddoes, etc , pasta ... and he train hard , his coach is an american , but it's not him alone that is responsible for him being a gold winner , you have to be in it to win it , he don't even want to take any vitamins , just natural ability , cut out all them fatty foods ... look for him in the 2012 or 2016 olympics no doubt ...

Well as someone who ran the 100m and 200m competitively... I've got to say that Usain's times are suspicious. I saw him run in Osaka last August and I saw him set the world record at 9.72 in NYC this year. He would be the first known athlete who has ever improved so dramatically in such a *** space of time without chemical assistance.
I sincerely hope this isn’t the case, but only time will tell. It’s a good thing that the IOC is now holding the samples for 8 years… so one way or the other, the truth will come out… If he as well as the lady sprinters are clean… good for them. An amazing accomplishment….

I am not sure what you are talking about. Usain has been dominating track and field since he was 15 years old when he won the world junior champion (correction to the person who said he did this at 16). If you don't know, there is google. He was a prodigy and still is. He is no fly by *** athlete who just rose to prominence out of nowhere. And for your information and education he won the silver medal in 200m the World Championship last year behind Tyson *** so what was he barely failing to qualify for? He only started running the 100m this year since he used to also do the 400 and decided to switch. And another thing, you say you are joking about dissing Jamaica and it's people but it is obvious you really feel the way you do, and that is ok. But there are broke people in Jamaica and there are rich people in Jamaica, just like in the USA. And there are ghettos there and there are many in the USA as well. So you can chill out with that, because being broke is nothing to be ashamed of unless you're lazy and broke. If you are trying to elevate yourself then you should be admired and not looked down on. "England's Daily Mail newspaper recently asked Ben Johnson, the Canadian sprinter stripped of his 1988 gold medal for steroid use, if he thought today's sprinters were still doping.
“How shall we put it to avoid being sued by everybody?” Johnson said. “OK, virtually all the big names, the winners, the stars all the fans come out to see . . . they're on drugs. Nothing has changed as a result of all the controversies, because without steroids it's not humanly possible to keep producing the performances.”
Victor Conte, the mastermind behind the BALCO doping empire, thinks he can put a number on it.
“9.94 seconds, maybe 9.92,” he says. “You'd have to have the perfect conditions, a tailwind, great mechanics. . . . I would say anything in the 9.8s is suspicious and anything in the 9.7s is highly suspicious.”
Seven men in history have run under 9.8 seconds in the 100 meters. Three ? Johnson, Tim Montgomery and Justin Gatlin ? have been caught doping and served competition bans. A fourth, Maurice Greene, was fingered this year by a Texas steroids dealer who offered a $10,000 wire-transfer receipt as proof.
The other three are at these Olympics: American Tyson ***, and Jamaica's Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt. Bolt holds the world record of 9.72. Powell has gone 9.74, *** 9.77. "
Worldybguy you saw Usain run in Osaka in the 200m. Since he didn't run the 100m before this year you cannot comment on dramatic improvement over that distance because you have nothing to compare it to. Shellyann you can wonder about because that is a dramatic improvement and so questions will no doubt be asked especially based on the history of prominent US athletes disgracing the sport with their use of performance enhancing drugs. Re the 200 and getting past A. Felix, Veronica did it at the last olympics so she can do it again. By the way, Sherone Simpson, along with 2 other athletes also got past her in the last grand prix leading up to the Olympics when she placed 4th. Perhaps she was just tired and is now rested and ready to go, but please do not put any money on it, better to put your money on a Jamaican sweep of the sprint events and the sprint relays. :)

That is correct. He competed in the 200M and the 4X100M relay. And the fact that he's never run 100M before now makes his times even more unrealistic. We have history, human body dyanamics as guides to use as comparison. Had he run thru the tape instead of celebrating early the record would propbably now be at 9.5 something...
Veronica Campbell did beat Allyson Felix in the 2004 Olympics in the 200M, but has not done so since then. The race Allyson came 4th in - she was tired after crossing the Atlantic several times. She decided to coast to the finish line instead of risking injury.
I'll put my money on Allyson... If not Allyson, who do you think will win the 200M.

yes your times can drop at anytime , some athletes meet the peak and cannot run any faster , but once you haven't peak as yet you stand a chance too ... i watch my son drop 28 seconds at one race , i could not believe it than turn back and round and do it again , and he did not peak until he won gold 3 weeks back at junior olympics .. sometimes you just have to gave it all you got for some it's one race a day , so you gave it all , don't hold anything back . shelly ann did not peak until she won gold , had the race got ran again , who know what would have happen , don't really care to know , but they are the best . these were the word fr my child after winning , he said mom at 300m left in the 3000m i lifeted my knees and drove my hand back i might have looked silly but i saw gold at the end waiting on me , then one kid pass me i was like hell no so i drove again this time i felt like my body turned to "jello" lol , but i won !!!!!!!!
