: SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A Puerto Rican man has been granted his wish to remain standing — even in death. A funeral home used a special embalming treatment to keep the corpse of 24-year-old Angel Pantoja Medina standing upright for his three-day wake.
Dressed in a Yankees baseball cap and sunglasses, Pantoja was mourned by relatives while propped upright in his mother's living room.
His brother Carlos told the El Nuevo Dia newspaper the victim had long said he wanted to be upright for his own wake: "He wanted to be happy, standing."
The owner of the Marin Funeral Home, Damaris Marin, told The Associated Press the mother asked him to fulfill her dead son's last wish.
Pantoja was found dead Friday underneath a bridge in San Juan and buried Monday. Police are investigating.

You know, morticians have been doing all kinds of stuff for years. I remember in my mother's hometown of Paducah, Ky., there was a black homeless man, whose body was never claimed by relatives, who was propped up against a wall of the funeral home for years. He became the funeral home's mascot of sorts. And Jet magazine, I believe, even did a feature on him.

Well I personally find it a bit tasteless, but if it was his wish and it helps his family cope, then thats what matters.
Personally, my cousin asked for something similar, and my aunt knocked him upside the head and told him HELL NO! She told him That as lomg as she was alive she wasnt going to make his death something tasteless and tacky, but thats my family, esp the old-school ones. They are very proper and by the book when it comes to stuff like that.
And I think the guy in this story was rolling with the wrong set of people according to the story I read on another site, so he kind of knew his days were numbered.

In the paper, he said that he thought of himself as a "pretty standup guy" and I think that it a great way to give him his last wishes. Yes, it is TOTALLY strange and creepy, but that's only because we're not used to it. Now, to have him in the house, his poor mother-- I feel for her. It would bug me out if I saw that in someone's house and I don't know if I would be able to sleep, but it was her SON. So, if it was your son, would you be scared? I don't think I would be. About two years ago, one of my students said that the family wanted to have his brother standing up against the casket at the funeral and/or wake. I thought it was interesting and different. Of course I'm not ignorant or rude so I just told him that it definitely would be memorable. I initially thought it was a gang-related thing for his brother because that's what he hinted at, however he respected the classroom rules and didn't get too specific as to why.

I have to agree some of the comments are over the top....If you don't think this manner of display at a wake is appropriate, then you know what, don't have it done at your wake or funeral. But who gets to be lord and master of what's "appropriate"? At the end of the day, it was the man's dying wish and it would be disrespectful of his family to ignore it.

I'm glad his mom was able to grant his living wish in death. Three days in her house in that condition is a little tough for me to grasp onto. I would only allow my son to be viewed standing up for a couple hours and then the funeral home would have to pick him up in preparation for his burial. Mama you have mad courage, this would be terrifying to me after everyone is gone.
I really don't see what the hell the big deal is. How is this scary or creepy? A dead body is a dead body, whether its standing or lying. What's the difference? I just remembered this; Back in the day people used to take pictures of the deceased in a pose doing something the deceased would have been doing had he/she been alive. They would keep the pictures in the photo album. They have a whole book about the practice, I forgot what its called. This type of thing has been going on for centuries. I personally would not be able to go to a wake where it looks as if the deceased is greeting me at the door! I am a bonafied scaredy cat! I would have nightmares thinking he coming to get me. I don't want to sound nasty by saying this but, why couldn't he wear dress clothing at his funeral? Sadly, more young people die young when they can't adjust to the norms of society such as, looking & finding a job, wearing business clothing and knowing where to wear it to, and speaking like human beings instead of cartoons!
Maybe, I am wrong about the guy. Maybe, he was this hardworking guy who worked three jobs to make ends meet? Maybe, he was a college student, or graduate who was working and contributing to society. Oddly, none of those sound right with the nature of this article. It is more accurate to assume he was out playing the streets and died young like so, many young men do.

I have to agree with everyone who said this is ridiculous because it is!! First of all, all that talk about facing judgement like a man and not wanting people to look down on him, blah blah blah is just foolishness. Man is a SPIRIT who possesses a SOUL and lives in a BODY. When you die your SPIRIT leaves its BODY and either goes to heaven or hell. The body which was created from dust will return to dust. God does not care about you standing your body up to face His jugdement!! That is why when Jesus asked the servant to follow him and the servant replied Master let me go bury my dead father first, Jesus responded by saying let the dead bury the dead! So the body is not of importance. It is your SPIRIT not your BODY that must stand before the Creator on judgement day!

wow. some of these comments really got out of control. my first instinct as i said above was that this is sick! and it is...to me. i'm american and normal folks don't do ish like this in america, perhaps somewhere else but not here. so its not necessarily disrespect to show our discomfort-we are accustomed to certain funeral procedures and when taboos are broken folks will be disturbed-thats natural and applies to anything that goes against the norm. and btw norm is whatever a society deems is the norm-there really is no right and wrong-just what we agree is right and wrong. and i think its wrong to insult another black person on here if you are black simply because of their hairstyle. she can rock her hair how she wants. even if she did insult someone from another race-let that race handle her insults-we shouldn't have to tear each other down with physical insults-especially not the kind that white people have said about us for centuries. if love jones is wrong let her be wrong-its her opinion but it makes things a whole lot uglier for her own kind to insult her physical god-given qualities, as opposed to character traits.
@Caddyfrk- I would've have ran out of the house or refuse to go in. not being funny at all becuz i don't see it as a laughing matter. i have a child and anyone loosing their baby before they leave the earth is something I pray I never face. Everyone is laughing but this lady lost her child. I am very scared of death and the death of others now at the age of 29 I still have not become comfortable with and don't think I ever will. My mom and I were at my great grandmother's house and it was a house next door which has now been torn down but she recalls when the lady passed her wake was in her home. My mom is 50 so it really hasn't been that far back in history when this was done.It spooked me out. If he was there 3 days straight, words could not convey how I would feel having the body in my house like that. Hell I hate going to the funeral home so imagine your house? To you dummies saying how did they know his last wishes when he has passed. Biggie did life after death the album before he died and also Tupac raps about death. left eye on her vh1 special has premonitions of her own death. Some people just know when it is their time. He probably knew the life he was living would cut his life short. You tell me you have never thought about death and mentioned to a family member things you would want to have carried out after your death. Even if it is to be happy and not to mourn. As I get older and I see so many young people dying I sometimes begin to wonder more about death and the afterlife. My mom said it best one day while we were talking. I told her I feared death. She told me she used to fear death but when she trusted in the Lord she doesn't worry about the fear of death anymore. People should be buried in what makes them happy and what you seen them wear while living in my opinion. I am a tomboy and I say all the time to my mom, just bury me in some J's, jeans, and a polo cuz thats what made me feel good and comfortable to wear while I was living. Where does it state one has to be buried in dress clothes? It may be tradition but definitely not a requirement. Some things I don't understand or try to understand. I bet some of you talking about him standing up in his mother's living room are the same people who go to a funeral and snap pictures of the deceased in their casket. I never understood who would want to see somebody like that. You would think they would want to have pictures of them happy and full of life. Some people mourn in different ways.

grown is taking care of your business and yourself. being responsible and making the right choices in life is grown. now if ur 18 and doing tha,t u are indeed grown but im sure u dont know nearly as much about life as u think...

If she wants to grant his request (regardless of how strange, ghetto, freaky, stupid, ignorant one may feel about this choice) how can one judge her. She's not trying to please america!!!! She's HURTING...EMPATHIZE with her pain don't judge her. Next time one should contemplate on what to say before saying. That is creepy 3 days, no air, imagine going to the bathroom in the middle of the night with him just "propped up" there? even when they take him where he wants to go that image will always be there. Like somebody said above good thing he didnt request to be seated at the table for a last meal with the family SMH. Good thing he didnt want to sit on his porch for 3 days to let the sunset on him while he melted away.

And, if he stood in his mom's living rm. for 3 days, can u imagine what happened when she woke up the first morning and walked in there? Naw, he couldn't just be standing in ma living rm, all nite. He would have to go back to the funeral home and lay down somewhere, like everybody else do at nite. This just gives me da creeps!!!

Im a little familiar with the "Metatron Cube" not the book as much as the celestial diagram matrix itself, but what inspired me to use it as my sign in was the story from the Anciant Jewish Talmud wich describes the Metatron as one of gods Arch Angels. I can't say that it's for me but at least his people granted him his wish. A dear friend of mine passed away and left a letter for me thinking that her family would grant her wish and send it to me and they (mother or brother)did not. The mother lied and said that she was sending it on several occasions and never did. So they honored what he wanted and did it and I have to respect that.
