: MediaTakeOut.com just learned that R&B singer Robin Thicke is making some strong accusations against Vibe Magazine. In a recent interview with Billboard Magazine, Thicke claims that Vibe told him that they wouldn’t put a “White artist” on the cover of their magazine.
Here’s an excerpt from the interview:
Interviewer: What is it like trying to break the color line from the other side? We’re no sure whether Robin is being truthful or whether he’s just talking ish. But if he’s telling the truth, Vibe’s in some pretty big ish…Robin Thicke: When I did a recent interview with Vibe magazine I asked, “Why can’t I get the cover? This is a magazine I love. If there’s one magazine that I’d want to be on the cover of, it’s Vibe.” Their response was they don’t have white artists on the cover; that the only white artist they’ve had on the cover was Eminem. I guess if that’s what it is, it is what it is. And I respect that because I live in a house with a black woman.
I won’t use the word “racism.” I will say it’s a tough — but rewarding — fight … You can’t always expect people to be as color-blind or open-minded as you want.
PHLEEEEASE,WHINING ABOUT NOT GETTING IN A MAGAZINE CAUSE HES WHITE,WHAT AOUT US BLACK PEOPLE THAT GET UNGAIR TREATMENT IN THE MEDIA,BY POLICE ON CERTAIN JOBS BECAUSE WERE BLACK, BUT HES BEEITCHING AND MOANING CAUSE HE CANT BE ON THE COVER OF A MAG, WOOOOO LETS CALL THE ***.A.A.A.C.P.,AL *** AND JESSE JACKSON. LOL
Black people need to be the last ones displaying any exclusion or near racist behavior like this. If my ex black panther grandmother was still alive....Boy I tell you what.
Anyway I like those two together, they make a beautiful couple. For them to stand 15 years with one another is even more beautiful.
@SEXY41 You sound real stupid. If ANYONE is discriminated against they have a right to speak on it! Just because racism towards blacks is more publicized doesn't mean that discrimination towards whites doesn't not go on also. Don't be mad because he's speaking out on it! He has every right and that ish is wrong!!!
It's not fair either way, but the bottom line is magazine sales. If white magazines like Cosmopolitan think their sales will suffer with a Black model on the cover, they simply won't put one on there. Beverly Johnson, Iman, Naomi Campbell, and Tyra Banks finally got covers, but only once in a blue moon, not nearly the same as their white counterparts. Same thing for Vibe, if they think people won't buy because Robin Thicke is white, or not popular enough, or whatever, hes's out. I think Eminem got there because he was a commodity; he had the #1 album and movie, plus he was contraversial. All of that adds up to $$$.
WHAT THIS HELL IS ROBIN THICKIE IS TALKING ABOUT VIB MAGINZINE HAD JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE ON THE COVER AND HE IS WHITE GUY. JUST LIKE HIM SO HE NEED TO GO SET DOWN SOMEPLACE ALMOST EVERYBODY IS ON THE COVER ON VIBE MAGINZINE WHITE BLACK MIXES EVERYONE. SO MAYBE THEY DONT LIKE HIM OR HE GOT SOMETHING AGUST A BLACK MAGINZE.WHAT A DAME SHM
Ribin Thicke is so sexxy! He should be on the cover cuz he is showing us in his videos how to treat a black woman.....OK!!!That's his wife in the "Lost without You" Video not no video ho!
BTW why everytime I hear his song "Magic" I think of Miss Universe and replay Miss USA falling down in my head. LMAO
Wanna hear Rihanna's new joint with T.I ...then take a listen on The Lime: Fresh news Everytime
He is singing to us and making music for us. He grew up with parents that made television theme songs for us-Alan Thicke and Gloria Loring. He chose this type of music because this is what he loves. I won't buy VIBE until I see Robin on the cover.
And MTO, you better post this unlike what you did to me last time!
I mean, straight up.....to be honest with you...Robin Thicke is a good artist and all.
BUT...
There are just some things that BLACKS AND BLACK people have created for them/ourselves. I personally don't even think EMINEM DESERVED to be on the cover at any point in time either. but hey, that's vibe.
Now what I DON'T understand is why VIBE would contradict themselves by throwing the bone to one white man and not the other. And I hope it's not just because EMINEM "RAPPED," cuz... well.... that's just a different story.
Sure there is alot of color barriers and stuff the people of the world need to work on. But you alson have to look at it like this to.
When was the last time you saw a black person on the cover of PEOPLE? What about the cover of RED BOOK?? Or even your everyday random catalouges where they dress up white folks to look good????
Black people were/are excluded from alot of the better things in life. We can't even be represented sometimes with a "good image." So I say all is right by there JUST BEING something for black people. I mean, call me ignorant and wrong, but I don't care. When do we shine?
PS....
I know alot of people on here will try and say random things aboout my post. If you do, good for you. If you don't, good for you too. I'm not here to combat with anyone. I'm just simply stating my opinion and what I feel are some liable rights for black people.
Reverse discrimination?! Finally, a white man gets an idea of what it's like to be black. Blacks have been barred from mag covers for decades, and for many pubs still are...How long did it take for a black swimsuit model to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated?
Besides, that's a copout. If I remember correctly Eminem was on the cover of VIBE when he was hot. Gimme a break!
UR NOT THAT TALENTED TO ME ROBIN U NEED TO FALL BACK... U WANT VIBE TO PUT U ON BECAUSE U R WHITE AND SOLD SOME CD'S BUT U ARE NOT THAT TALENTED AND THERE ARE MANY OTHER BOTHERS BEFORE U THAT NEED TO BE ON THE COVER OF VIBE... SO CRY A RIVER SOME WHERE ELSE... U ARE JUST NOT THAT HOT...AND PLEASE STOP RUNNING AROUND LIKE UR BLACK AND TRYING TO GET A BLACK CARD...U ARE WHITE MAN TRING TO BE A BOTHER... I DONT CARE HOW MUCH MAVIN *** AND MARY J U LISTEN TOO...
vibe magazine is racist. imagine if teen magazine or whatever, refused a black artist on their cover what the reaction would be.
if vogue italia can devote a one month issue to blacks, why cant vibe have a white person on the cover?
it is racism. because if it was the other way around, people would be screaming racism.
YepIsaidit Flag post I wouldn't doubt him. Reverse racism and predjudice is alive and real. It's our defense mechanism. But it does us no favours.
CASE IN POINT: Look at how many black people including MTO were talking greasy when that white guy was Valedictorian at Morehouse this year. -------
Racism is racism. There is no such thing as "reverse" racism.
It makes as much sense as "Irregardless".
FIRST OF ALL HE *** BE ON THE COVER OF HIS OWN DAYUM WACKASS ABLUM COVERS LET ALONE A MAGAZINE. WHY ARE YOU PAYING HIM ANY ATTENTION HE SUCK WITH A CAPITAL ***!!!!!!!!!!! MAN THAT MOFO REINVENTED HIMSELF SO MANY TIMES UNTIL WE GOT TIRED AND PAYED HIM ATTENTION. I BLAME ALL YOU MOFOS WHO EVEN WHO EVEN LET HIM MAKE A 2ND VIDEO YET ALONE ALBUM. FOR SHAME!!!!!!!
WTF??!! VIBE you just a bunch of hypocritical Sonsabytches! Despite the fact this is one FINEASS *** (That man is fine as hell!!!, PAULA, LUCKY BYTCH, I HATE YOU!!!), We wanna see him! We buy his music, don't we? You interviewded him, didn't you? Y'all must be smoking low grade crack, to think it's okay to do that. We DON'T CARE what color a *** is, as long as the music's on point.
LOL@BOOYAH. I *** HATE the word "irregardless"!! It make no God *** sense! it's just a mix up between "irrespective" and "regardless" with the same meaning but sound so stupid.
FIRST OF ALL HE *** BE ON THE COVER OF HIS OWN DAYUM WACKASS ALBUM COVERS LET ALONE A MAGAZINE. WHY ARE YOU PAYING HIM ANY ATTENTION HE SUCK WITH A CAPITAL ***!!!!!!!!!!! MAN THAT MOFO REINVENTED HIMSELF SO MANY TIMES UNTIL WE GOT TIRED AND PAYED HIM ATTENTION. I BLAME ALL YOU MOFOS WHO EVEN LET HIM MAKE A 2ND VIDEO YET ALONE ALBUM. FOR SHAME!!!!!!!
@LOLALOVE - I just saw your post. I agree with some of it, except the Amy Whitehouse part, I'm sorry that bytch need an exorcism! How she gonna try an' emulate people, then make a racist crack about them? That's one bytch that puts the crack into [EXPLETIVE]. (couldn't help that one, "crack" is my word for the day LOL)
"You can’t always expect people to be as color-blind or open-minded as you want."
I can totally agree w/ that statement, and since I do, I can honestly say I believe RT, I mean, ***, where I used to live you barely heard Eminem being played on any hip-hop radio stations despite his fame and genuine talent. When will people wake up and realize it's not about color, it's about CHARACTER.
his wife is black? i thought she was latina or something. always learn something new on this site.
i don't think Robin Thicke is big enough to be on the Vibe cover yet. He only had one smash single. Although all his CDs were AWESOME. Maybe he needs a few more hits, or be big as Eminem in order to get a cover. Hell, black folk gotta make big and make the white folk happy to be on the cover of any of the "mainstream" *cough* white a$$ *cough* magazines!
Work harder, Robin! You'll get it.
How do we know if Robin is the only artists that's been denied?! Just because he's white doesn't mean that's the reason why he didn't make the cover. Until we hear why Vibe denied him, then we can't say race is the reason behind this. I could see EM makin' the cover since he's sold millions of records, has hits and been fully embraced by the black community!!!
Not a fan of Paulas mom jeans in that picture
And.....I was disappointed to see Eminem on the cover...I would think Robin Thicke would be more qualified than that clown! at least he shows some dedication to black culture.
Should white people be on th cover of essence? You have to look at the intent and "mission" of the magazine.
people still buy vibe? hmmmm
it's probably true, just like all other magazines you try to appeal to a certain audience. I don't think they'd put Robin Thicke on the cover like they wouldn't put someone like Raheem Devaughn on the cover. Sure they make great soulful music but no one listens to that anymore, that's not the music that gets the top spot on Bill Board Hot 100. And plus him being white could be very true...we know who Emenim is easy but not everyone knows who Robin Thicke is.
There is racism everywhere...blacks hatin whites..whites hatin blacks, hispanics hatin blacks, blacks hatin hispanics, whites hatin hispanics etc...the list goes on, but to say you are a black person "hating" racism but yet don't think another race should be part of a certain "group" mag or whatever it may be.... just signifies your hypocracy...because that makes YOU racist yourself!
WELL JOIN THE CLUB!!! LOL. there were and still are plenty of people who havent made covers b/c of skin color,or ethnic background. some people are saying that people should be colorblind, and thats all good and all, but in the REAL WORLD RACISM is still alive and kickin and i think that alot of people turn a blind eye to that, so when they do get discriminated against they all surprised and wondering why. its because in alot of cases, racism still lives some folks gotta step outside there little fantasy.
Now if they really said that, they were bold as HELL. I can't see a professional better yet, the editor of a very popular magazine saying something like that because that's bad for business and could seriously hurt their sales in the long run. I'm sure black people are not the only ones that buy Vibe but after a comment like that, we just might be.
in some way i kinda believe him, but in some way i think is kinda of more about the green.considering everything, can robin thicke sell there magazines.no one buys magazines no more and vibe is loosing money, trust me, can't tell you how i know but its pretty cheap company.i gotta say though they got alot of cute woman writer there though.
Here we go trying to cease racism and you have a Black Person still conceiving it what is the problem but we get upset when a White Magazine doesn't allow us to be on the cover. This doesn't make any sense at all. It takes One to make a change and then all will follow after. Be a Leader not a follower.
You guys are saying his wife is this drop dead beautiful chick....where at? I mean, she isn't bad looking, but she isn't all that you guys are making her out to be. PLZ!!
As far as Robin talking about he lives in a house with a black woman, *** if he didn't find the lightest one he would find. You can barely tell that she's black. Get the fugg out of here with that mess.
Love your music though, Robin.
claiming the reason he couldn't get on the cover b/c he's white is lame(does he know who owns Vibe Quincy Jones & all his kids have white in them) & then for him to say he is a big fan of magazine is a lie-if he was such a big fan he would know that there has been more than just Eminem on the cover:JT,Gwen Stefani ,Robert Deniro have all been on there. When you have more than one hit then maybe they'll put you on ***
FIRST, VIBE IS A BUNCH OF REVERSE RACISM @SS NYGGAS !!!
SECOND, HALF U NYGGAS IN HERE IS A BUNCH OF REVERSE RACISM BYTCHES TOO !
U SAME *** WOULD BE ON HERE COMPLAININ IF THEY SAID NO TO PUTTIN DENZEL ON THE COVER OF GQ MAGAZINE OR SOME *** !
U *** IN HERE IS A BUNCH OF RACIST HYPOCRITES IN HERE !
U NYGGAS MAKE ME SICK !
MTO, YOU'S A BUNCH OR BLACK RACIST BYTCHES TOO, REAL TALK !
RACISM IS WRONG EITHER WAY YOU GAWDAM IDIOTS !
That's really unfortunate because I really like Robin Thicke since his first CD in 2002. But the reality is-Vibe IS a black magazine geared towards the urban/rap audience moreso than urban r&b/pop (hence why Eminem made the cover). Furthermore, though Eminem is white, he is a rapper and a force to be reckoned with-and Vibe couldn't deny him that-but r&b-I guess they can (and did).
The only thing I can say to Robin is why was it not so important for you to use a Black Woman in your "Lost without You" video. If you are married to a Black Women then your video should reflect that, just like you want your picture on Vibe magazine cover to reflect your love of your artform; Black music.
I just thought that was very ignorant. And if that was a black person asking to be on the cover of Vogue, Rolling Stones, or any other white magazine and was turned down because of their skin color, there would be a boycott right now. Jesse Jackson, Al ***, and the entire P.U.S.H coalition would be calling them out. I just don't think that was right. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER VIBE MAGAZINE AGAIN!!!
wow, i hope that isn't true for real. It's one thing for magazines to practice stupid things like tat and it's another to just flat out say " wll we don't give the cover to white/black people". I always understood VIBE to be a magazine about urban and hip hop culture...not BLACK PEOPLE LoL. Last time I checked lots of people are involved and appreciate hip hop and the urban vibe so no reason to hate on Robin. He's doing his thing...very talented and do not see him as a one hit wonder. everyone needs to open their eyes....LET'S SHARE CHILDREN!!!
He did not make the cover because he's mediocre. Yeah he had a couple of joints but he's not that dude that he thinks he is. VIBE had Eminem, Robert Downey and my favorite half breed Mr.Obma. He's talented but he's slowly turning into another Kanye, tooting there own horn *** and whining. Welcome to the life of a black person *** ass. I can't stand spoiled white folks..Go tell Dad.
