JaeCe, say it again! If I were an actress I would got out and apply for loans to start my own production company...make my OWN independent films and act in them...that's how bad things are for them, now. I don't think singers should be given roles because their popularity brings in new crowds and I also don't think they should be applauded for doing THEIR BEST in a role when seasoned actresses just give PHENOMENAL PERFORMANCES, PERIOD. So, no - Jennifer DID NOT deserve the Oscar and we should be seeing Sanaa and Taraji where Alicia's and Beyonce's faces are.
You know I've got to contradict myself for a minute - I DO think Jennifer can act when she is comfortable in a role. She was uncomfortable in *** and The City (movie) and it showed big time but in the previews for this movie she seems pretty comfy with the southern accent. Still, I think she and her singer peers should have been at the END of the list when it comes to major roles.
i agree that a lot of these singers and rappers get roles because of their popularity. it is very rare that we get a performer with real acting abilities. it's sad how actors with more experience and better skills don't get major roles. I was rooting for jennifer to win the oscar b/c I loved dreamgirls and I'm glad she won but it was because of that song "and I am telling you..." the other nominees were much better actresses.
@JaCe---You're correct in your assumptions bur it's called corporate america (in a sense)....I think if you can get ahead in life and not literally hurt anyone and you know the right people, hey, go for it....I personally think both of those girls are good actresses...
Sometimes greatness doesn't take years to come into effect...I feel the movies those 2 played in thus for, their acting abilities were truly good...My personal feelings though...I'm certain the producers of this movie just didnt pick someone for this role....I read the book and characters are all fitting.... Lets just support our BLACK BROTHERS & SISTERS...
ITS CALLED LIFE...Nothing stays the same...these are our up & coming actresses of tomorrow
Is the white girl Dakota Fanning all growed up? I think everybody looks great; Latifah's haircut really suits her. As far as who gets what role, who really knows what happened behind the scene? Maybe Sanaa or some of the "more established" actresses were too expensive or they had scheduling conflicts, or just weren't what the producers were looking for. If they cast Gabrielle Union everybody would say they're sick of her. Although Alicia and Jennifer are better known for singing, they seem to be able to act too (unlike Beyonce), so let's give them a chance! On the other hand, Jennifer was mis-cast in *** and the City; if she blows another role it's probably a wrap for her in that department unless Dream Girls II comes out.
@YuseFx-----You are an ignorant simple minded person for posting that rape comment even with the all jokes aside....
Maybe she just loves to eat....Therefor that answers the question of why is she so fat...There are people of all ages reading these comments & many are yound...I work with young adolescent girls and this issue is devesting to many of those girls and yes, sometimes this is possibly one outlet...
The girl is heavy but to imply she may have been molsested is more ludacris than some of the statements I've ever read....
Lets pray you dont deal with this issue before you leave this earth...
metaphysically eating is too satisfy something missing...filling yourself with food is to make up for your life being empty...
sugar cravings indicate lack of love...thats why women who are diabetic and obese are always saying things like hey sweety...hey suga...
doll1 noone loves to eat unless its an addiction and you eat all chemikill laced food eat to live not live to eat..shes eating to die

Actually, the book was written by a black woman. A black woman directed it, too (the same chick who directed "Love and Basketball"). The only thing "white" about this movie/book is Dakota Fanning's character. All the other main characters are black as you can see. Stop judging it by what you THINK and just support our folks.
