: WASHINGTON - (AP) Activists at a conservative political forum snapped up boxes of waffle mix depicting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a racial stereotype on its front and wearing Arab-like headdress on its top flap.
Values Voter Summit organizers cut off sales of Obama Waffles boxes on Saturday, saying they had not realized the boxes displayed "offensive material." The summit and the exhibit hall where the boxes were sold had been open since Thursday afternoon.
The box was meant as political satire, said Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, two writers from Franklin, Tenn., who created the mix. They sold it for $10 a box from a rented booth at the summit sponsored by the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council.
David Nammo, executive director of the lobbying group FRC Action, said summit organizers were told the boxes were a parody of Obama's policy positions but had not examined them closely.
Republican Party stalwarts Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney were among speakers at the forum, which officials said drew 2,100 activists from 44 states.
While Obama Waffles takes aim at Obama's politics by poking fun at his public remarks and positions on issues, it also plays off the old image of the pancake-mix icon Aunt Jemima, which has been widely criticized as a demeaning stereotype. Obama is portrayed with popping eyes and big, thick lips as he stares at a plate of waffles and smiles broadly.
Placing Obama in Arab-like headdress recalls the false rumor that he is a follower of Islam, though he is actually a Christian.
On the back of the box, Obama is depicted in stereotypical Mexican dress, including a sombrero, above a recipe for "Open Border Fiesta Waffles" that says it can serve "4 or more illegal aliens." The recipe includes a tip: "While waiting for these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language?"
The novelty item also takes shots at 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry, Obama's wife, Michelle, and Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
The Obama campaign declined to comment.
Wearing white chef's aprons, Whitlock and DeMoss were doing a brisk business at noon Saturday selling the waffle mix to people crowded around their booth. Two pyramids of waffle mix boxes stood several feet high on the booth's table.
"It's the ultimate political souvenir," DeMoss told a customer.
Asked if he considered the pictures of Obama on the box to be racial stereotypes, Whitlock said: "We had some people mention that to us, but you think of Newman's Own or Emeril's — there are tons and tons of personality-branded food products on the market. So we've taken that model and, using political satire, have highlighted his policies, his position changes."
The socially conservative public policy groups American Values and Focus on the Family Action co-sponsored the summit.
@Jean Grey NO DOUBT !!!!
The Obama run for the presidency is highlighting all sorts of ugly Euro american beliefs about us that are usually covered in rhetoric and reverse psychology. The GOP out of desperation is appealing to the racist and silent white and non black collective majority through thinly veiled racist satire and outright lies.
I wouldn't really think of it as offensive if they didn't seem to be comparing him to Aunt Jemima. The pic is not a terrible caracature of him and republicans do claim that he flip flops. It seems more offensive to Mexicans. Aunt Jemima represents black women from the earlier centuries and she is not offensive at all. She is us and we should not be ashamed of her.
White republicans are showing their true racist colors! They could have used any other image besides that one! If McCain Wins(which he won't) it would be a sad day for america. and i DO NOT want to hear racist whites complain about lack of anything under McCain. We are all feeling the financial pinch and these racist rednecks who made this racist waffle *** are feeling it too. They'd rather suffer under 4 more years of republican fumbling in the white house Than vote for an Ivy league educated, qualified Senator from Ill. because of race? Good Luck America!
This comes as no surprise. I figured that cover of the New Yorker magazine would eventually trickle down into this brand of "covert" racism. Just like the 'Curious George' *** some white folks were selling earlier this year that depicted George eating a banana with the tagline "Obama '08" underneath. They do *** like this & wonder why some blacks want to vote for Obama strictly based on his skin color. Despite the man's Harvard education, his million dollar home, beautiful wife & kids, BI-RACIAL ancestry, (etc) they view us as nothing more than a stereotype.
NO, ITS NOT RACIST. AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY REALLY DO CARE ABOUT AFRICAN-AMERICANS AND OTHER MINORITIES. YEAH RIGHT!
THIS IS WHY I WOULD NEVER VOTE REPUBLICAN. THEY WILL ALWAYS BE ABOUT KEEPING BLACKS IN THEIR PLACE.
AND TO YOU STUPID(YEAH, I CALLED YOU STUPID) BLACK PEOPLE THAT VOTE REPUBLICAN, THIS IS HOW THEY REALLY SEE YOU. YOU ARE NOTHING TO THEM. ALL YOU CAN DO IS COOK THEIR FOOD AND CLEAN THEIR HOUSES. OH AND OF COURSE ENTERTAIN THEM. THEY LOOK WATCHING YOU GUYS SING AND DANCE FOR THEM.
@360 I agree
But the good part is a lot of whites, Rep, and others are getting tried of the mud slinging. I saw a clip from The View when they told Mccain that he was lying on and about Obama. Even ORielly had to man up and come to Obama’s defense, so maybe this isn’t 100% bad maybe this is showing some people how the Rep's really are.
It's the Amerikkkan friggin way. They knew exactly what they were doing and therefore they should have continued to sell them. The general rule is White people have no respect or love for black people so it is fitting that they degrade, demean, negatively stereotype, and oppress us every chance that they get. It's who they are and will always be. When a person does not respect you they have reason to properly treat you.
WELL AINT THAT A B%TCH!
They should make somethin with him screwin his daughter with dirty *** feet while his wife watch!
Yall no they known for that type sh%t, fcukin they own kids, smellin like bologna, with dirty feet!
yeah i said it sh%t im mad at that sh%t! now we jus keep goin the sweet Dr Martin Luther King way. its time to get real gutter Malcom X style on they *** now. they goin to *** far!
MORE IMPORTANT THAT I HAVE ON MY WAFFLE BOX
I AM SO PROUD OF HOW GHETTO REPUBLICANS HAVE BECOME.

THIS IS WHY WE BLACKS IN AMERICA SHOULD STICK TOGETHER CAUSE THOSE FOLKS REALLY DON'T LIKE US. ALL THE PRETENDING COMES OUT @ TIMES
its sad how they will run the same garbage over and over to get our attention to vote for mccain. Loser!!! Bush's Prescription for Bad Health Care
The Bush administration launched an attack on women's health care and reproductive rights that has put Planned Parenthood and the people we serve in the fight of our lives. We need your help today — and over the next few weeks — to fight back. Thank you in advance for standing with us during this critical time.
For the past month, we have been aware that the Bush administration was planning to release a rule that would limit the rights of patients to receive complete and accurate reproductive health information and services. With your help, we did all we could to stop the president from going through with the threat to release the new rule. But Bush was intent on delivering this "gift" to his extreme anti-choice supporters before he left office. Today was their lucky day.
You can bet that anti-choice activists are thrilled that President Bush made good on his promise to them. This rule will allow them to receive federal funds for so-called "crisis pregnancy centers" — anti-choice facilities whose purpose is to deceive and dissuade women from accessing birth control and abortion information and services. Click here to help us fight back.
A woman’s ability to manage her own health care is being compromised by politics and ideology. The new regulation complicates rather than clarifies the law. It lets health care providers define abortion, which could threaten access to birth control and broader reproductive health care. This is just one more example of how the Bush administration puts politics in the exam room.
We've got a fight on our hands — and it's a big one. We have 30 days to dispute the rule with everything we've got. That includes you. It is during crises like the one happening today when your support for Planned Parenthood and the people we serve is most needed. We need your emergency contribution. We're launching a massive campaign immediately. Click here to help.
When more and more families are uninsured and have difficulty accessing health care at all, implementing a rule that will limit access to health services is utterly perplexing. The Bush administration's outrageous actions never cease to amaze us, but this one is beyond belief. It will hurt the women who most need help at a time when they are most vulnerable. It's unconscionable, and it is wrong. And, once again, it's our job to stop it.
Thank you for your help today and during the next few weeks.

SHOCKER : Lou Dobb's wife is Mexican-American
This evening on CBS's "60 Minutes" Lesley Stahl interviewed the CNN anti-Mexican xenophobe Lou Dobbs. At one point in the interview Ms. Stahl commented, ". . . given the tone of his show, there's something even more surprising, something he never brings up: the fact that his wife Debi is Mexican-American."
This is quite a shock to many Mexican immigrants who have learned to dislike Dobbs because of his constant hate-mongering against what he calls criminal illegal aliens. He recently insinuated that America has the capability of rounding up all *** Mexicans and deporting them. Dobbs has become the "hero" of anti-Mexican xenophobes around the country.
Lou Dobbs has twin daughters with Debi whose maiden name is Segura. Mexican blood runs in the veins of his daughters, Hillary and Heather, yet he never mentions this on his anti-immigration CNN shows.
Lou and Debi Dobbs resides on a 300-acre horse farm in Sussex County, New Jersey with her Mexican parents and his mother. Leslie Stahl showed the parents of his wife and they looked totally Mexican.
About 4 years ago Debi Dobbs was arrested at the Newark Liberty International Airport after airport security found a loaded gun she was carrying in her handbag. She was charged with criminal possession of a weapon. After being fingerprinted and photographed by Port Authority Police, Debi Dobbs was released without bail. Mrs. Dobbs faced arraignment in a Newark court but the outcome of the case is not generally known.
Any African American who posted a comment stating this tactic is funny or not offensive should be ashamed of yourselves. This is CLEARLY racist and offensive and your lack of concern and outrage is deplorable and the very reason some of us are in the state we're in. *** are so passive because they have no real reason to care as long as their benefits keep rolling in. I just hope you're ready for the next wave of state & federal cutbacks to those benefits once McCain/Palin gets voted in. If not for yourselves PLEASE register to vote, if you haven't, for the sake of our children's future. It's time we started taking responsibility for our own and taking care of one another.
That goes to show how scared white folks are. They are grabbing at straws trying to find anything to link this man because of his name to terrorism. If you ask me if it were not for all of these white presidents going to these other countries trying to install their beliefs on them we wouldn't be in this mess (Bush War). Just do your trade with them and let them run their country anyway they want to. The US is run the way the white man wants it to be run. White man and woman first then comes the Asians and Spanish people. We black folks are last. And that is why Amerika is afraid of a BLACK EDUCATED MAN BEING PRESIDENT. We can run the country better. And they are scarred they will be in our boat. Just poor as all hell.
McCain aint nothing but antoher Bush. Yall mofos who wanna vote for him gonna find that out if he wins. Obama should have picked Hillary as his VP cause they would have been unstoppable and McCain couldnt have countered that. But instead he picked that other dude and McCain countered him by picking a woman. Which makes woman want to vote for her. However she is inexpierenced. She has a pregnant teen daughter who isnt married. She didnt even know McCain was gonna pick her because he only called her 2 days before VP election. So anybody who votes for McCain and Palin get ready to ruin America for another 4 yrs. IDK about yall but I would rather vote for real change and thats Obama.
Put ya *** in the air!!!! Thats real talk, ya dig!!!
Before everyone gets too excited (thought it would appear it's a bit late to be saying that), I thought I'd point a couple things out since I'm apparently the only one who's actually gone to the Obama Waffles web site ([link to external website removed] First, one must understand what is meant in American politics by the term "waffling". When a politician is said to be waffling (or walking the waffled line if you prefer), it is referring to that individual's tendency to change his stance on the issues repeatedly. Second, if the intention of Obama Waffles was "LOL LOOK HE'S AUNT JEMIMA", they most certainly wouldn't have a picture of John Kerry as the "2004 Waffle King" taking up your whole screen as soon as you enter the site. And my 3rd point? Look at that picture of John Kerry. They've made him and Mr. Obama equally doofy-looking.
