: Scandal hits the most prolific Black filmmaker in history. MediaTakeOut.com just learned that Tyler Perry is heaped in the midst of quite a scandal. According to a person close to one of Tyler's former writers, Tyler fired a number of African American writers for his TV show House Of Payne. Here's what the insider told us:
TYLER PERRY just fired his whole staff of black writers in Los Angeles....over the phone...the writers of HOUSE OF PAYNE were unceremoniously FIRED by ROGER BOB from ATL officeWow, that's quite a charge. And while MediaTakeOut.com can't say for certain what's really going on - we can report that something is definitely poppin' off on the set. Here's what the NY Times reported yesterday:The new head writer is WHITE and the most inexperienced on the crew...so much for black empowerment...these are the same souls who slaved over his 100 episodes in one year.
Now that the show is on FOX, all of their hard work is rewarded with a ticket straight to the unemployment line...what happened to Christian values and black empowerment?
The Writers Guild of America West said Thursday that it had filed an unfair labor practice complaint with the National Labor Relations Board against Tyler Perry's production studio after it fired four writers for the popular TBS situation comedy, "House of Payne" who were seeking union representation.Now this is just messy - with a CAPITAL M. Tyler - you better clean this mess up before you lose what you've got....Jeff Hermanson, an assistant executive director for the Writers Guild, said that the four writers, who were based in Los Angeles, were fired earlier this week after negotiations between the Writers Guild and representatives of Mr. Perry's production company, which is based in Atlanta, broke down.
The four writers also were working on the development of a new comedy being produced by Mr. Perry, "Meet the Browns," a spinoff of his recent film of the same name that is scheduled to premiere in January on TBS. The four writers who were fired include more than half of the seven writers working on the new series.
it does not matter if the writers were black or that the new writer is white. the important question is why were they fired? if he had a reason to fire them, then good riddance!!! i watched that show a few times and was truly NOT a fan. I concur with him, he needed new writers!i doubt Perry turned straight vanilla like that.

But that show, House of Payne sucks big time. And why the 2 elders (husband and wife) look as fat and greasy as swine with clothes? He definitely need some new writers and potentially new actors. Probably not a race issue...dude just made a simple business decision.

I can't disagree with you more. Lets say you hire your cousin for a job. He is working out fine at first. But then some changes happens in the system but he can't seem to keep up. The success he had at first has dwindled and you are in need of results. A very knowledgeable person comes along who might not have the experience with the company that your cousin had, but his wealth of knowledge and ideas will help youtake that business to the next level, do you keep your cousin on, and may not be able to compete with the demands of the times, or do you upgrade so you can be a major player by hiring the new talent? See that's the thing, I am by no means a Biblical scholar. I'm just open-minded. I do believe in God & I have struggled with faith growing up. You see, I grew up in an "overly" religious environment, so my thought process in my adult life is to shy away from judgment. As humans we are very judgmental...and being in a religious environment, it's that much more prevalent. I know that to err is human and to forgive is absolutely devine!
And you are absolutely right. And for that reason, I will change my tag (at least today because you motivated me *wink*)...because perception DOES become reality & if you choose vulgarity, that's what you become - true or not!

The show was not the best in my opinion and it was hard for me to support it when I didn't find the majority of the shows that funny or catchy. Someone mentioned prior to this message that it is about quality. I concur!! It does not and should not matter what color the writers are when you expect quality outputs. The writers thus far did a great job and should be applauded for their services. If another African American writer could produce the same results, then I am sure he would have hired them. Lets just see what unfolds and wish the show success along the way.
I hope he does something with the writers staff cause his movies all seem the same. He has little no substance in his movies its just the same black female with 3 kids on welfare or a sucessful black female who can't see the find a decent man. Not very intertaining...
I'm sorry but to watch a Tyler Perry movie you have to look deeper than the surface. His movies always carry a message. That message is hope. That with determination, reflection , and action, when we are at our lowest, we can achieve something greater, not just accept our lot. His movies are a mirror of him. A person who came from a lot of adversity, to a person through his own personal struggles managed to turn something negative into a positive. In his movies that underlining thought is always there.

How are people suppose to act when they get money? Smarter right so they can maintain that money. If cutting off weak links to maintain that status quo, you have to do whats required. The way we dress the way we speak the way we wear our hair, etc. etc. is a reflection of us trying to fit in. Sometimes though, we have to step back and look at ourselves in the mirror and ask, is that really me or is there more to meet the eye that I have hidden in order to fit in with the masses. This will be kinda lengthy MTO. Sorry. Okay , now I love Tyler and I love Madea. But I’m going to keep it real about Tyler and what I see coming. ..because I recently read that he is going to say goodbye to “Madea” and that shocked me. What I see is Tyler trying to cross over into mainstream media, and he thinks the way to do that is to kiss up to the white man. The platform that brought Mr Tyler success is the theatrical plays ,with a clever mixture of whitty humor, varied depictions of African American life styles, and heart felt storylines that have left many of us thinking, debating, laughing and thinking about your own life. I personally, would not change a thing. While I understand the need to grow and expand your horizons, there is never a need to compromise or move away from the successes of what makes you unique. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. The latest movie that is in theatres, is a drama and includes a mixed cast and was a great movie. However, I fear that Tyler is moving more in this direction, and thus wants to incorporate more and more white writers and cast , in order to feel accepted by white mainstream. The problem is , this is will change the mood and the style of films that we have grown to love. Let’s face it, while our culture is diverse, most blacks can relate to most of Tyler’s cast and movie. Also, If I want to see a white film , I have Steven Speilberg, Mel Gibson, and Stephen King that will ensure that I get one. In fact if I see Stephen King’s name on a movie, I know what to expect. Horror, mystery and intrigue. What’s wrong with seeing Tyler Perry or Spike Lee’s name on a movie and “knowing” what to expect. Don’t change a thing! Spike sure has not changed a thing. He only changes the cast and the storyline. But we get what we expect. A controversial, raw and thought provoking twist to all of his movies, that will definitely put plenty of African American actors and actresses to work. I just hope Tyler continues to do the same,, and will not get caught up in “fitting in” with mainstream. There is likely something to this, because I heard that they will be picketing his studios down here in Atlanta, where he is hosting a party this weekend. Oprah Winfrey and others are scheduled to attend. This should be interesting. I wonder what these angry black writers side of the story is ?

Sounds like he got a big head over his success and didn’t want to pay the writers who have helped him achieve television success proper compensation….which is sad. I hope he realizes that writing a black sitcom about black issues will not have the same “flavor” so to speak or reality with white writers. It will now become a stereotyped exaggeration…as if it wasn’t before, but at least originally it was sort of an inside joke like Mind of Mencia.

It said he has 7 writers and he fired 4 of them. Then out of the 4 new one's he hired, one of them happens to be white. That one white writer is the head writer, which actually makes sense, when you consider the show is moving to FOX and needs to be able to also appeal to the "mainstream"(AKA White)audience.
I'm not sure how it all works but, I'll bet that the head writer is the one who tells all the other writers what direction to go, and makes the final decisions. Most of the actual writing is probably done by the other writers, who are mostly, if not all, black.
And, we dont know why those people where fired. I'm sorry but the show ***' sucks. Its corny as hell, and not funny. So, I'm glad he's making some changes.
I dont think Tyler Perry, owes any of ya'll nyggas a job. He owes it to us, and his livelyhood, to put out quality material.

House of Payne SUCKS!!! The writing is horrible and the jokes make the characters look like bufoons. He needs to do something beforethe show gets cancelled. Based on the content of the show, I would have fired everyone after 20 episodes. Revamping the staff just makes good BUSINESS sense. You don't keep people on the payroll just because they are a certain color. You have to earn your job and your money. The previous writers didn't do that.
That's just too bad. I am lost for words! I really like House of Payne and I didn't see anything really wrong with it except for a few issues. I hope everything goes better for Tyler and his crew. Tyler should fire and hire regardless of race though. I hope he does get better writers. I am looking forward to the new show though and I hope it is going to be good. So many people hate House of Payne, I just don't understand why!

I'm sorry but I don't care about him being loyal to whoever got him where he is right now. That is a horrible show, no matter what race the writers are. The actors are not believable and the whole crack head with two kids was a little much. And then he brings her back and she's pregnant and not sure who the father was! I hope the show gets better with the new writing staff and is not some ghetto soap opera, but a quality Black sitcom about a loving Black family.
as a people we hold everyone near and dear to us like they owe us something... do not lose site to the fact that he is in a business and not in our homes. everytime there is some negative press about someone who has made it we are quick to challenge, and be so negative. if you have enjoyed just one of his plays or movies he has done enough. just like a pastor or mentor they just want to touch one person. if he feels a change is needed we need to respect that beause he has empowered so many doing it his way and if he was smart enough to make it this far his decision whatever it is should be respected....

Tyler didn't become as successful as he is--Giving credit or merit, based on skin color..If he fired black writers--and hired a white one..I am sure it had more to do with the work and it was likely a good business decision///
I am a black business owner..and I promote or release, based on the bottom line..MY bottom line..My MONEY...I will not keep a black employee with low performance, if there is a white one, a red or a blue one..that will give me a better return on my dollar... Black people need to get out of this mindset, that someone owes you something because you share the same cultural background..

I am DEFINITELY going to require more information before making a declaration on this current Tyler Perry situation. There is a motive behind every maneuver. So, must learn of the validity in this decision as I have such deep respect for this talented man & what he has achieved in relatively *** years.
Certainly, the move to network television on FOX is exciting & promising for the longevity of the show, yet, pressure-filled. A shake-up in writing & staff is imminent when a transition of this magnitude occurs in television entertainment. And, regrettably, the poorly written House Of Payne scripts are uninpirsed & often corny. I quit the show in the 1st season following a few episodes although I wanted to support the Tyler Perry debut television effort. It just wasn't intelligent enough for me.
