: Not Again!!! MediaTakeOut.com just caught wind that ANOTHER home built by America's Home Makeover is headed into foreclosure.
Here's an excerpt of the report, courtesy of the Orlando Sentinal:
Sadie Holmes thought it was a blessing when ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition built her a 7,000-square-foot home and office for her charity in 2006.Now she's struggling to keep her nonprofit afloat, and she may end up losing the $400,000 home if she can't pay a $29,000 county lien -- placed on the property after months of code violations racked up.
Holmes' story had appealed to the TV show's producers. A former drug addict, Holmes had turned her life around to help others in her run-down Winwood neighborhood near Altamonte Springs. Since 2000, she had given out clothing, food and furniture from her 900-square-foot home.
Mercedes Homes built the six-bedroom, Mediterranean-style home and an adjacent 2,000-square-foot office for the charity. She moved into it after the makeover was done in February 2006.
About a month later, Seminole planning officials cleared Holmes to run a volunteer organization out of the house. But they specifically prohibited ''outside storage of any materials'' unless she screened them from view.
By September 2007, Seminole County Sheriff's Office records show, a code-enforcement officer began filing violation reports against the property. Holmes contends that she began receiving visits from the officer even earlier.
a real home owner would know that nothing is ever FREE!!! Even if the home was given to her, she still has to pay taxes on that big azz house and the property....you got to know this kind of stuff before you just accept a responsibility of getting a new home!!! And to go from 900 to 7000 square feet, you gotta know the utilities and everything else is gonna increase as well. I commend her for getting her life together and wanting to help others, but sometimes, no all the time, you gotta put YOU first!!!
she needs legal representation...this officer & the good people of Altamonea Springs was possibly waiting for any opportunitiy to make sure she didnt keep her makeover....come on thats a black woman that's bringing far too many people in & out of her home & I'm certain they think she's associated with drugs ...thats harassment..Although you're given this home, there's still taxes to be paid..I hope she doesnt relapse because addictions are powerful
NOW THATZ A *** SHAME WHY IZ IT THAT WHEN YOU GIVE PEOPLE SOMETHING FOR FREE! THEY DONT WANNA TAKE CARE OF IT LYKE THEY SHOULD!
ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY GET ALL THESE FAST ***, QUICK MONEY SCHEMEZ TO GET RICH RITE OUTTA THE HOME!!!!! SHE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN A REAL AND REGULAR JOB AND KEEP ALL THAT MESS OUTTA HER BRAND NEW HOME.
ITZ NOT LYKE GOING TO AN OFFICE BUILDIN AND MESSIN UP! THE WORST YOU'LL GET THERE IZ A PINK SLIP. . . . . NOT BECOMING A *** ALL OVER AGIN!!!
TO ME PEOPLE LYKE THIS WHO CANT HELP THEMSELVES, SHOULD NOT GET ANY SPECIAL HELP FROM NOBODY.
Yall can't read. lol...
Extreme makeover home edition builds these houses and gives it to the recipient free and clear without a mortgage. The reason the last idiots lost their home is because they refinanced a $500,000 house and then they broke a$$es couldn't pay the mortgage back. The show should have some type of contract with the people to not refinance the home cause people are just greedy as hell.
Now this poor woman got the house and then the county where she lives started f**king with her giving her tickets and stuff. She couldn't afford to pay them and now she's headed for forclosure. I actually feel bad for her.
But someone was right when they said the show is giving these people houses that can't afford them. That puts them in a worse position than if they didn't have this big fancy house.
Is anyone reading? She has a lien because she is basically overwhelmed with donations for her charity, she was supposed to keep it out of sight. I will say maybe she should have looked into storage for those items, but it is not that she can not keep up her house. I personally know a family that was chosen for a makeover and what we don't see on tv is all the other monetary donations from big companies for these families such as Verizon. And some of their bills are even paid up for certain amounts of time. What was sad is when the team came to our city some a$$ holes chose to rob and beat up folks.
I VOLUNTEER AT A *** AND WITH FOSTER CHILDREN SOMETIMES, SO I HAVE A DIFFERENT OUTLOOK -- LET'S JUST PRAY FOR THIS WOMAN THAT THE LORD WILL SEND HER SOMEONE TO PAY THIS VIOLATION AND THAT THERE WON'T BE ANY FUTURE VIOLATIONS -- SHE SEEMS TO WANT TO TRULY HELP FOLKS AND MAY HAY BEEN A LITTLE OVERZEALOUS AND STORED THINGS OUTSIDE - PLUS WITH THE NEW BIG HOUSE AND HER BEING ABLE TO HELP MORE PEOPLE, I HAVE A FEELING THE NEIGHBORHOOD WASN'T ENOYING THE INCREASED FLOW OF PEOPLE COMING AND GOING.
Maybe people don't realize, but---Once you remodel/renovate a home with up to date materials it no longer has the same value it goes UP! Therefore, your property taxes, utilities, etc. I believe most people are getting forclosed on for higher taxes and the real messed up part is the neighbors because their property value goes up, BUT so does their taxes as well without even asking. If u have a three bedroom house and add a lot of sitting rooms, extra bedrooms, etc your power bill will not be the same. The people who come in and donate their time and money to build these houses know that---so why? They should use better judgement when deciding on the applicants.
@ladycage: you are exactly 100% correct. This show takes people who are poor, mostly uneducated, have no money management skills and no business experience and either completely renovates their dilapidated homes or else they move them into these mini mansions. These people don't realize any home improvements immediately drives the property value up thus increasing their property taxes. And even if some of these people are given brand new homes with no mortgage, they still have to pay for the upkeep, heating costs and taxes which are incredibly expensive on large homes.
Sounds like the neighbors were the ones who put in the complaints to the city and they just ran with it after that. I'm not sure what kind of neighborhood she lives in, but anything that could possibly devalue the adjacent homes will be spoken against, the residents simply will not stand for it. However, they could have had some compassion since she is doing good deeds, but I guess that didn't count for sh*t! We need more info before pointing the finger.
$29,000 county lien -- placed on the property after months of code violations racked up. ****************
How much was each violation? What da fck was outside? How long has she been receiving fines? Is she notified of the fine right away? Is there interest and penalties when the fine is not paid on time? How the hell did it rack up to $29,000?I think this a bogus *** way for the county to take this lady's *** house!
Anybody got a match? I will burn dat *** down first!!!!!!!!!!!!

*** DID YOU GUYS LEARN TO READ!!!!!!!!!!!!. SHE MAY LOOSE THE HOUSE BECAUSE OF CODE VIOLATIONS NOT BECAUSE SHE COULDNT PAY THE PAYMENTS. THERE ARE NO PAYMENTS TO BE PAID EXCEPT TAXES ON THE HOUSE. SHE OWNED THE HOUSE FREE AND CLEAR. IF YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST STORY, THE HOUSE WAS FORECLOSED ON BECAUSE THE PEOPLE THAT OWNED THE HOUSE TOOK OUT A LOAN AGAINST THE HOUSE TO PUT MONEY IN THEIR BUSINESS AND COULDNT MAKE THE PAYMENTS ON THE LOAN.
LEARN TO READ EVERYTHING BEFORE MAKING COMMENTS.
A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T UNDERSTAND ALL THAT ENTAILS OWNING A HOME. YOU CAN'T CALL THE LANDLORD TO FIX ANYTHING. EVERY TOOL OR REPAIR NEEDED, AND ALL THE TAX IS ON YOU NOW. I DON'T BELIEVE FOR A SECOND THAT THE HOME EDITION FOLKS DIDN'T KNOW THIS, UNFORTUNATELY A LOT OF LAYPEOPLE LEARN IT THE HARD WAY.
At least these were code violations and not for nonpayment of taxes. If she can come to an agreement with the County her problems should be over.
Hopefully the show is counseling people on the costs associated with these newer, bigger homes. Property taxes still come with the house and so do utiltities.
I saw one the other *** and the woman had 8 kids; it was 13 people living in the house. She could barely afford to pay her electric bill so I wonder how she would be able to maintain the bigger house and use more electric?

I agree it seems to me that they gave her a violation for any and everything. Just because she was a person that went from nothing to something! people hate to see other people SHINE!
there is no such thing as a free house. that's why you can loose it. the government owns all the land, google it. if i gave u a mansion right now, i guarantee you couldn't afford the property taxes. in addition, u'd be paying out thousands to people just to cut the grass and maintain the pool(s) or u'd be facing fines.
Do yall read before yall comment? She's not losing the houses cause she didn't keep up with her taxes or anything that keeps the house functioning. But because of fines the city placed upon her. And that has nothing to do with ABC and the show. That's just an unfortunate event. Obviously she was keeping up with the house, but just couldn't handle the additional fines the city tacked on her.
TerriB ur right but this show has had a history of people loosing their homes or struggling to pay bills for whateva reason. The show can put people in tough situations. Living in a beautiful home is nice, not when ur stressed out trying to pay bill. Give me an apart and my mental anyday. Ain't sh** on this planet worth graying over!!!
That's true Dreayonn, but let's remember, these people were homeowner's BEFORE they called out for help. So they should already know what is required in keeping up a home. Granted, they never owned a home in that extreme, but they're the ones that took the time out to create a home video, mail it in, and plea for help, and they know that Extreme Makeover is not going to come in a build them a nice shack.
where is the 7 billion dollar bail out for us? All I can say that she didnt make a wise choice..if you cant afford the home..than LEAVE IT ALONE. but its sad to see people losing their homes. They should wipe out all credit card debt...and let people just pay their loans and mortgages...but thats only in my little imaginary world.
Them haters (County Sheriffs) Had they eye on this lady since she benefitted from this home improvement, by abc. They were jealous and decided they'll pay close attention to this lady to bring trouble to her. I guess they were thinking how dare this black women get to enjoy such a luxury make over and no matter how hard we work we'll never be able to enjoy the kind of confort and luxury of a home like ms. Holmes. Haters never want to see you get a head, no matter how much opportunity may favor your interest.
@brownspade, that's exactly whats going on, they want that property.
We should dig deep, and help and organization thats been looking out for others,
Mercedes Homes has set up adonation fund with Bank of America to contribute to the Holmes family. The fund ensures the Holmes family will have the necessary financial foundation to maintain their new home..
Home Maintenance Fund Click here to donate to the Home Maintenance FundThe Home Maintenance Fund is designed to ensure that the Holmes family has the necessary resources to maintain their new home. The intent of the show and the participants is to help the recipients of the Makeover and provide a dwelling in tip-top shape for a deserving family. One way we can all help is to make sure the upkeep of the home never becomes a burden to Sadie or interferes again with the important community work she is performing.
