: MOGADISHU (AFP) — Thousands of people gathered Monday to witness 50 Somali men stone a woman to death after an Islamic court in the southern port of Kismayo found her guilty of adultery, witnesses said.
Aisho Ibrahim Dhuhulow, who had been found guilty of extra-marital intercourse was buried in the ground up to her neck while the men pelted her head with rocks.
"Our sister Aisha asked the Islamic Sharia court in Kismayo to be charged and punished for the crime she committed," local Islamist leader Sheikh Hayakallah told the crowd.
"She admitted in front of the court to engaging in adulterous sexual intercourse," he added.
"She was asked several times to review her confession but she stressed that she wanted Sharia law and the deserved punishment to apply."
The execution was carried in one of the city's main squares.
The port of Kismayo was seized in August by a coalition of forces loyal to rebel leader Hassan Turki, and the Shebab, the country's main radical Islamist insurgent organisation.
Turki is listed as a terrorist financier by Washington.
The new administration formed there began implementing a strict form of Sharia (Islamic law).
"This afternoon we are telling the people of Kismayo that we are practising a punishment that is rare in this region and was carried out in Kismayo for the first time," Sheikh Hayakallah said.
Cameras were banned from the public stoning but print and radio journalists were allowed to attend.

Wow...I can't even imagine what it must have felt like to be stoned in that manner... However, MTO only has a part of the story... if you go to CNN .com or other sites, it stated that the girl was raped by a few men (I think 3 or 4), and when she reportd it or told her family, they accused her of adultery... even though she was NOT married to anyone... definitely a sad story...

MOGADISHU, Somalia — A 13-year-old girl who said she had been raped was stoned to death in Somalia after being accused of adultery by Islamic militants, a human rights group said.
Dozens of men stoned Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow to death Oct. 27 in a stadium packed with 1,000 spectators in the southern port city of Kismayo, Amnesty International and Somali media reported, citing witnesses. The Islamic militia in charge of Kismayo had accused her of adultery after she reported that three men had raped her, the rights group said.
Initial local media reports said Duhulow was 23, but her father told Amnesty International she was 13. Some of the Somali journalists who first reported the killing later told Amnesty International that they had reported she was 23 based upon her physical appearance.
Calls to Somali government officials and the local administration in Kismayo rang unanswered Saturday.
"This child suffered a horrendous death at the behest of the armed opposition groups who currently control Kismayo," David Copeman, Amnesty International's Somalia campaigner, said in a statement Friday.
Somalia is among the world's most violent and impoverished countries. The nation of some 8 million people has not had a functioning government since warlords overthrew a dictator in 1991 then turned on each other.
A quarter of Somali children die before age 5; nearly every public institution has collapsed. Fighting is a daily occurrence, with violent deaths reported nearly every day.
Islamic militants with ties to al-Qaida have been battling the government and its Ethiopian allies since their combined forces pushed the Islamists from the capital in December 2006. Within weeks of being driven out, the Islamists launched an insurgency that has killed thousands of civilians.
In recent months, the militants appear to be gaining strength. The group has taken over the port of Kismayo, Somalia's third-largest city, and dismantled pro-government roadblocks. They also effectively closed the Mogadishu airport by threatening to attack any plane using it.
Somalia is a crazy country. Nothing but warlords over there. People can't even go on vacation on the seas in that area due to pirates. Many Somlian refugees have fled to other countries. What kind of country forces its people to leave or the people WANT to leave?

Her father said she had only travelled to Kismayo from Hagardeer refugee camp in north eastern Kenya three months earlier.
She was detained by militia of the Kismayo authorities, a coalition of Al-shabab and clan militias. During this time, she was reportedly extremely distressed, with some individuals stating she had become mentally unstable. A truckload of stones was brought into the stadium to be used in the stoning.
At one point during the stoning, Amnesty International has been told by numerous eyewitnesses that nurses were instructed to check whether Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow was still alive when buried in the ground. They removed her from the ground, declared that she was, and she was replaced in the hole where she had been buried for the stoning to continue.
An individual calling himself Sheik Hayakalah, was quoted on Radio Shabelle saying:``The evidence came from her side and she officially confirmed her guilt, while she told us that she is happy with the punishment under Islamic law.'' In contradiction to this claim, a number of eye witnesses have told Amnesty International she struggled with her captors and had to be forcibly carried into the stadium.
Inside the stadium, militia members opened fire when some of the witnesses to the killing attempted to save her life, and *** dead a boy who was a bystander. I read a story that she was raped. I read another story on the same CNN website about the parents of a 5 yo girl and 7 yo boy that the family had arranged for marriage. UNBELIEVABLE.
It highly upsets me that men in other countries past such harsh punishments on young girls and women that have been victims of these type of crimes. Who gathers to watch these killings??? It's not entertainment...it's heartbreaking.

What's sad, is that she thought this was the RIGHT thing, even after they asked her to reconsider. This is what she wanted, but this is what she knew. Think about some of the sh!t that happens to us here that doesn't happen in most Muslim societies. According to many women there they are happy they don't have to go right out to work after having a baby...worry about if their man can leave them with a bunch of children with no punishment...worry about bleaching, starving, weaving to be considered beautiful...worry about their sons being killed because of their skin color...worry about excessive bills, taxes, car notes...worry about birth control...worry about unfair wages...

thing is according to sharia law if someone is accused of adultery the accuser must have 4 witnesses who saw the act.. if they fail to bring these witnesses to the court, the womans dignity is harmed and her reputation is thought to be unnecessarily tainted and the accuser gets a whipping. so if ya wanna get technical according to islam she was wrongfully killed and these so called islamic militants are warlords disguised as sheiks and anything but muslim.

Just because laws are imposed under the auspices of RELIGION does not make it morally correct. Yes, something can be said for the lack of modesty and chastity of American women (and the men as well), however, using your logic, the moral mindset of the pre-emancipation era should have been "respected" as well since keeping black slaves was deemed a national right and acceptable under God.

Again, yes, our country is full of it's own "negatives", but that said, to overlook such a BARBARIC act as to "stoning" a person alive while spectators gawk and cheer is revolting. At the very least, in most US states an inmate is "put to sleep" when he/she is given the ultimate punishment and there are not thousands of "blood thirsty fans" there to celebrate any such act.
Think about it, it also RARE in 2008 to see racially motivated "lynchings" in the US but it still happens...does that make it OK because it is rare? No! Of course not!

It is so ironic that we condemn people for murderous acts and the like, and yet we are so quick to put a woman or a man to death. Too many innocent people have died at the hands of people claiming to cleanse their societies, people claiming to 'uphold' the law, and people claiming the law gives them the right to take someone's life. When people stand outside the jail and cheer in excitement when someone gets the death penalty shows what a sick world we live in.
