While other news sources claim that the role was had been offered to a number of other actresses, MediaTakeOut.com confirmed with a top notch source that the role belongs to the Bajan songstress if she wants it.
The movie, which is set for production in 2009 will be co produced by The Rza (from Wu Tang) and Dallas Jackson. Actor Samuel Jackson has reportedly signed onto the cast.

The Rza announced to MTV that he wanted her to have the role and, honestly, I can't see any other black actress making it more than just another of those straight to DVD type movies. This remake is sort of like an upgrade of the old movie...they're looking to employ the technology the old movie couldn't take advantage of... I think it will be worth watching, definitely.... Especially if they got RZA's best friend, Quentin Tarantino to help. So, it's probably true that the RZA got his way...it isn't a starring role, though, and Rihanna definitely couldn't hurt. Though I am suddenly seeing Sidney Portier as Laura Charles.

I read about this on M TV news. THis should be a good look for Rhianna, if she takes it. Especially if they cast Chris Brown in the role of Leroy. Big Juicy, i agree with what you said about acting, but casting (often in singing roles) will not require advanced acting skills. They are looking for what they feel will be a box office draw, which is Rhianna, and Beyonce. The hope is that their millions of fans will come to see them on the big screen. I think I worded that wrong. What I was trying to get across is that whomever plays Laura Charles doesn't necessarily have to be edgy already, hence: Rihanna.
But, I do agree that a singer should play that role. Rihanna is gorgeous, I just don't see her as Laura Charles. Not to mention that accent, but I guess it could work given the NEW script.

Why do singers want to act and actors want to sing? The two don't always cross over nicely (Madonna, Beyonce, Prince, Diddy, Bow-Wow, the list is endless). Remember when Eddie Murphy tried to sing? Throw models in there too; for some reason they think their next step is acting. That doesn't work either (Giselle, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, etc). Some very talented people are able to do both (Jennifer Husdon, although she wasn't great in "Sex and the City", perhaps Alecia Keyes, Diana Ross), but for the most part, please leave acting to the professionals. Why should Rihanna be in a movie? There are people who have been working for a break like this all their lives, but they won't get it because the studio executives want to put the latest "it" girl in it to sell more seats. Some of the girls form Top Model are already out there "acting". Please, someone stop this before artistic talent is completely extinct and replaced by looks and popularity according to 12-18 year olds.

This is nothing new. When a recording artist has started to make a name for themselves, movies are usually the next step. It's funny though. When you think about all those people who went to acting school and learned Methods, etc. and stage and all the things involved in acting, here comes a singer with a hit record or two and gets offered an acting part - and has not had one iota of acting lessons. hmmmm funny, but true. When you think about it - the way the world is today, you almost don't need 'lessons'. This mess is a REALITY and all the world is a stage and all the people merely players. Each one acting his own part. All she has to do is learn the camera angles and be able to cry on cue. I'm sure she can do it.
