: LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The California woman who astonished doctors earlier this week by giving birth to octuplets at a suburban Los Angeles hospital already has six other children, CBS News reported on Thursday.
The woman delivered six boys and two girls prematurely by Caesarean section on Monday, surprising doctors who had seen only seven babies in ultrasound images.
Officials at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in the Los Angeles suburb of Bellflower have declined to identify the mother or reveal if she received fertility treatments, which can increase the likelihood of multiple births.
There are no known cases of naturally conceived octuplets.
A Kaiser Permanente spokeswoman declined to comment on the CBS report but said that all eight babies were still in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit and doing well.
Five of the babies were feeding and six were breathing on their own, hospital spokeswoman Nancy Tovar-Huxen said. She said doctors had not yet determined when they could go home.
In reporting on "The Early Show" that the mother already has six other children, a CBS reporter who visited the woman's Los Angeles-area home cited two unnamed acquaintances.
One of those acquaintances said that the mother lived with her parents and that two of her other children were twins.
The birth of the octuplets already has raised eyebrows, with fertility and reproductive experts saying that such high-risk pregnancies should be avoided.
"When we see something like this in the general fertility world, it gives us the heebie-jeebies," Michael Tucker, an Atlanta-based clinical embryologist and leading researcher in fertility treatments, told the Los Angeles Times.
"If a medical practitioner had anything to do with it, there's some degree of inappropriate medical therapy there," the Times quoted him as saying.
The last octuplets known to have survived birth in the United States, six girls and two boys, were born in Houston in 1998. One of the babies, a girl, died one week later.

Not sure why she was getting fertility treatments when she already had six kids and was living at home with her parents but I respect her decision not to abort the unexpected fetuses.
Per: Yahoo "Suleman said her daughter had embryos implanted last year, and after finding out she was pregnant with multiple babies was given the option by doctors of selectively reducing the number of embryos. The woman declined.
"What do you suggest she should have done? She refused to have them killed," Suleman told the Times. "That is a very painful thing."
Dr. Harold Henry said the woman was already pregnant when she came to Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center, and she was counseled about the risks of her pregnancy and on the option of aborting some of the fetuses. Doctors had been expecting only seven babies, but an eighth was born in the cesarean delivery."
Well they didn't say whether or not she even had fertility drugs anyway. I believe it is a blessing for children to come into this world regardless of how many at one time. Whatever the world thinks, GOD saw fit for these precious babies to brought into this world for a reason that we will never undestand. I pray that these babies are loved and nurtured in every way possible.

My beautiful grandmother gave birth to ten kids and they all turned out ok. She and my grandfather were not wealthy by any means, but managed to put almost all of her kids through college. And there were at least three other women on my grandmother's street who had even more kids than she did. These parents were hardworking and took great care of their large families. While it is certainly not for everyone, it can work. On Mother's Day, my grandmother used to clean up. God bless.

They undergo these fertility treatments, which we all know in our right minds are NOT guaranteed and when they don't get pregnant they call the insurance company and tell them to deny payment to the physician. This then causes a battle between doctor and insurance company, which will ultimately trickle down to everyone else in the form of higher premiums, etc.
I don't know what this lady was thinking, was she getting old and the thought of not being able to have anymore kids scared her into the fertiliy drugs?? Maybe.

Dang I only have ONE child but I really struggled BIGTIME that first year with him, as a single mom with no help from his dad or the government. I worked up until the day he was born, took about a week and a half off to recover and then went right back to work. I have a family member that works at this facility and this patient is 22 years old with 6 children already, my relative says she is foreign, you cannot really tell where she is from. Also being stated on the news that the mother is single and from a LOW INCOME family, residing with her parents in Whittier,CA where the average home is 2-3 bedrooms. I'm really tryna figure out how the woman got her hands on any type of fertility medications, being that she is 22 w/6 babies and single, I'm thinking she either lied to the doctor about how many children she already had or she obtained the drugs online or in another country. In any case someone needs to investigate because the welfare of all her children are at stake. I know this is a free counrty and we can do what we want with our bodies but why in the hell is she taking fertility drugs(which was also confirmed on the news) when she is a single mother of 6. Yve I'm not condoning Childbirth=Government check. Uncle Sam does me with no vaseline every two weeks just like he does every other working class American, and as for student loans, I'll be paying mine back even when my little one goes to college. But with all the tax money our government *** away on garbage, I can't believe people are complaining about money actually going to help people who NEED it. In a perfect world no one would have more kids than they can afford, but we don't live in a perfect world but it is NEVER a waste when money from my paycheck feeds a child or helps them get an education. I saw a recent news report on this which stated the woman isn't married and lives with her parents for financial and emotional support. It was also stated that it is her father who is a contractor in Iraq and will be leaving soon to work so that he can support the family. With either case, this is just too many kids to be taking care of at once even with her parental support!

This woman lives 15 minutes from me, The house they live in is a 2 bedroom home so it was already over crowed. The woman went to Mexico to have the treatment done because no U.S doc would give a 33 year old woman with 6 kids this treatment it's unethical and they would loose their license.
This is a ploy to get money. Already Kaiser has received 1/2 a million in donations for this woman. People magazine has offered her 1 million so if she hold out any more she could get 3 or 4 million easy!

@ Yve I am so happy I am not your friend lol. I use to be the same way you are girl. I had no kids and I spoke about everyone and what they should do and could do. I did not believe in spanking kids, all women on welfare should get a job etc, etc. (you get the rest) Then life happened. Life clearly has not happened to you yet. Life is what you did not plan. All the things I said would never happen to me happened twice. Just wait and see.
All the people who spoke out against handouts believe in them now lol. I know so many people who lost businesses, 401k had to file bankrupt, lost their homes retirement etc. We have bigger fish to fry than what the little money you guys are speaking of. I am here in Cali, and just heard [another] news story about this woman. Apparently, her mother is speaking out against her daughter, and stated that she has been obsessed with having children since she was a child. The mom said that she felt that 14 kids was too many children to have without a husband. So, according to the woman's own mom, she is not married. And she and her mother both have the same last name, Suleman. Dang.

Grandma: Octuplets mom obsessed with kids 'Instead of becoming a kindergarten teacher ... she started having them'

LOS ANGELES - The woman who gave birth to octuplets this week conceived all 14 of her children through in vitro fertilization, is not married and has been obsessed with having children since she was a teenager, her mother said.
Angela Suleman told The Associated Press she was not supportive when her daughter, Nadya Suleman, decided to have more embryos implanted last year.
"It can't go on any longer," she said in a phone interview Friday. "She's got six children and no husband. I was brought up the traditional way. I firmly believe in marriage. But she didn't want to get married."
Nadya Suleman, 33, gave birth Monday in nearby Bellflower. She was expected to remain in the hospital for at least a few more days, and her newborns for at least a month.
A spokeswoman at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center said the babies were doing well and seven were breathing unassisted.
While her daughter recovers, Angela Suleman is taking care of the other six children, ages 2 through 7, at the family home in Whittier, about 15 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
She said she warned her daughter that when she gets home from the hospital, "I'm going to be gone."
A mother's dilemma Angela Suleman said her daughter always had trouble conceiving and underwent in vitro fertilization treatments because her fallopian tubes are "plugged up."
There were frozen embryos left over after her previous pregnancies and her daughter didn't want them destroyed, so she decided to have more children.
Her mother and doctors have said the woman was told she had the option to abort some of the embryos and, later, the fetuses. She refused.
Her mother said she does not believe her daughter will have any more children.
"She doesn't have any more (frozen embryos), so it's over now," she said. "It has to be."
Her daughter wanted to have children since she was a teenager, "but luckily she couldn't," her mother said.
"Instead of becoming a kindergarten teacher or something, she started having them, but not the normal way," he mother said.
The mother's obsession with children caused Angela Suleman considerable stress, so she sought help from a psychologist, who told her to order her daughter out of the house.
"Maybe she wouldn't have had so many kids then, but she is a grown woman," Angela Suleman said. "I feel responsible and I didn't want to throw her out."
'How can you afford that' Yolanda Garcia, 49, of Whittier, said she helped care for the mother's autistic son three years ago.
"From what I could tell back then, she was pretty happy with herself, saying she liked having kids and she wanted 12 kids in all," Garcia told the Long Beach Press-Telegram.
"She told me that all of her kids were through in vitro, and I said 'Gosh, how can you afford that and go to school at the same time?"' she added. "And she said it's because she got paid for it."
Garcia said she did not ask for details.
The mother holds a 2006 degree in child and adolescent development from California State University, Fullerton, and as late as last spring she was studying for a master's degree in counseling, college spokeswoman Paula Selleck told the Press-Telegram. Her fertility doctor has not been identified. Her mother told the Los Angeles Times all the children came from the same sperm donor but she declined to identify him.
Birth certificates reviewed by The Associated Press identify a David Solomon as the father for the four oldest children. Certificates for the other children were not immediately available.
The news that the octuplets' mother already had six children sparked an ethical debate. Some medical experts were disturbed to hear that she was offered fertility treatment, and troubled by the possibility that she was implanted with so many embryos.
Others worried that she would be overwhelmed trying to raise so many children and would end up relying on public support.
The eight babies — six boys and two girls — were delivered by Cesarean section weighing between 1 pound, 8 ounces and 3 pounds, 4 ounces. Forty-six physicians and staff assisted in the deliveries.
