: MediaTakeOut.com just learned that former NBA baller Derrick Coleman's Detroit restaurant 'Sweet Georgia Brown' was just evicted from it’s Greektown location for non-payment of rent.
According to published reports, the restaurant owed more than $70,000.00 in back rent and word on the street is that they were passing RUBBER CHECKS to their employees.
Here’s what Derrick Coleman, a former NJ Net, Philadelphia Sixer and Detroit Piston, had to say about it:
"I am most concerned about my valued employees that have been with me from the beginning. I want to assist them in any way possible as my employees depend on me. With the economy, fine dining dollars are just not there -- especially in the City of Detroit. We would feel sorry for him, but the restaurant’s financial troubles seem to go back further than the recession. Here’s a list of stuff the restaurant was caught up in the past:Businesses open and close every day, and it was news to me that Sweet Georgia Brown's would be evicted this morning. The workers are my main concern."
In January 2008, the Internal Revenue Service filed a $55,697 tax lien against [The restaurant] for delinquent taxes, according to the Wayne County Register of Deeds. Court records also show seven other suits filed against the restaurant since 2005, including two by state of Michigan for back taxes in the amount of $112,358 in 2005 and $368,699 in 2007. The most recent suit was filed in December by Bloomfield Hills advertising agency Berline Group Inc. for $11,922.
