: WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An Indevus Pharmaceuticals gel formulated to protect women from the virus that causes AIDS appeared to protect about a third of them from infection -- the first time a so-called microbicide has been shown to work, researchers told a conference in Montreal.
Dr. Salim Abdool Karim of the Center for the AIDS Program of Research in South Africa and colleagues said the trial of 3,000 women showed the gel may have protected 30 percent of the women from infection.

That's crazy. Is it believeable? Yes. Would I have been a test subject? No. Fact of the matter there are man made products that can kill the AIDS virus but at the same time if they are injected into the human body it would kill you as well. So until there is a cheap usuable cure yall need to strap the hell up. But on some real *** yall need to focus on the rates here in the US. Washington, DC is the highest ranking location for HIV/AIDS and Prince George's County, MD, ranks #4. So the person sitting next to you at work or standing next to you in line, probably has that *** and they are smiling all in your face trynna get your goodies.
I want to know who they tested this stuff on. I guess they said hey you black female, we are going to put this gel on you.....we don't know if it works or not.....and you go out and f*ck a hiv/aids having man and see if you develop any symptons. But notice that it was in AFRICA, so I am thinking that maybe they tricked the participaants somehow. Because can you really trust drug companies? Their objective is making money, and lots of it. And I DON'T Believe this BS. 30% is a low percentage, especially it was only 3,000 woman tha participated. If the number of women increased, I am sure the percentage would singificantly reduce.

It's nothing better to me than having my doctor tell me "you're NEGATIVE". Keep protecting yourselves people. I will say that they have made progress as far as medicine. Far fewer folks dying compared to the 80's and 90's but it doesn't mean you should go out bang in the raw. A gel should not condone unprotected ***...don't be stupid please.
there is not way to prevent hiv/aids except for to wrap it up.......condoms are cheap and easy to get and if you don't want to wear a rubber the be in a monogamus sexual relationship meaning only just have *** with one guy for a long period of time and if he is whack then move on prtectedly and get tested
Anti-AIDS gel disappoints, researchers say
The Associated Press The first anti-AIDS vaginal gel to make it through late-stage testing failed to stop HIV infection in a study of 6,000 South African women, disappointed researchers announced Monday. The study was marred by low use of the gel, which could have undermined results, they said. Women used it less than half the number of times they had ***, and only 10% said they used it every time as directed.
Scientists are still analyzing the results to see if this made a difference. They also plan more tests on a revamped gel containing an AIDS drug that they hope will work better.
The gel used in the current study did prove safe, however, and researchers called that a watershed event.
But for now, the effort is the latest disappointment in two decades of trying to develop a microbicide — a cream or gel women could use to lower their risk of getting HIV through ***. A female-controlled method is especially needed in poor countries where women often can't persuade men to use condoms.

I think they are getting close to a vaccine, but I still wouldn't trust this. Just 30%, what about the other 70%. They need to work on these vaccines for STD's. Innocent people who contract viruses really need them. I feel sorry for them, but I believe Barack will put money in healthcare and research!
SMH, @ people saying, "I wish this was true so I can get my freak on". They are one of the main reasons diseases are spreading. In my field, I come across many innocent people who have contracted this and other STD's. The kids, babies, and married partners, in which one was being promiscuous. I hope researchers think of the victims!
It's 2009 if people are still getting AIDS they deserve it. Women need to stop being dumb as hell and should always carry condoms since men do not even though they should.

Please note, many people can be exposed to HIV and not get the virus. Just because you sleep with someone with HIV doesn't mean you'll get it the first go around.
I'd really wish the press would stop using the term AIDS. You don't "get" AIDS. You get HIV.
