According to the National Enquirer, all 4 men survived the boat capsizing. The four were waiting on top of the upside down boat – waiting for help – then 3 of them lost their sanity.
Here’s how Smith reportedly died:
“Schuyler told the Coast Guard that Smith became hysterical, screaming, ‘No one is coming to help us! The survivor was hanging steady on to the engine how did he convince the other three that was his spot? cant see how the other three big strappy men climbed on top that little overturned boat that was bobbing and weaving in rough water and stayed there until they just jumped in? Guess we'll never know as dead men tell no tales.
How does this story sounds fishy? They gave up he didn't. Stop trying to make something out of nothing people. I feel for them and this is a tragedy, but some people are blaming schyler when he wasn't the only white boy on the boat. He survived because he held on. Sometimes you don't give up! I love water, but would NEVER get in a boat, ship, yacht, whatever...b/c of things like that happening.
This story does seem a little far fetched and I can't fanthom them giving up so quick, especially if the boat was unsinkable? I mean, you never know what you might think and do in a situation like theirs.
And while I know it sounds like these reporters took snippets from the movies Open Water 1 & 2, what happened in the movies are realistic and the result of being in a SCRARY situation. So, what happened to them MIGHT be true.
But, I don't know...they had too many options to weigh and I'm sure the good out-weighed the bad. So, why not hang on?

I don't understand why people feel that the survivor would kill his friends... why is this about race, 1 of the 3 were white. I believed he was hallucinating when he said he saw lights way out there in the ocean. They were smart to wait until he regained his senses to get the story.... nothing he would have said would have been valid.
As a boater and offshore fisherman (with a grown-man's boat), for the people here that don't know, 5 foot waves can scare the hell out of you while your IN the boat but these guy were in 9-15 footers IN the water holding onto a capsized boat for hours. DAMNN! No, I don't believe everything this "survivor" said happen, happened. He keeps changing his story and if I swam underneath my overturned boat to retrieve life vests, well damnnit, I'm getting a vest FIRST. Not a seat cushion. Call me selfish! If they got the life vest why not swim and get the rope onboard(all boats have line) and they could've/should've tied themselves to the outdrive, individually. ***, use your *** around your belt loops at least. What happened to these guys are really 'not likely' to happen to people that been in the water for less then 1-2 days but more likely 4-5 days. ***'s not adding up, if you asked me.

Hmmmmmm I guess that's the message that someone wants to convey. Schuyler wasn't "strong" enough to make it in the NFL like Cooper or Smith but he was "strong" enough to survive this. Smith's family said he was an excellent swimmer. Funny how Smith woke up and started attacking Schuyler and Bleakley;I wonder why. If only their bodies were found in order for autopsies to be done.

I followed this story from beginning to end and didnt believe they gave up either BUT after hearing the story of the survivor and hearing the doctors talk about hypothermia and what it does to the brain..I believe it.
My heart was soooooo saddened to hear about this story. 3 talented men with careers ahead and families at home now lost in the sea and the bodies may never be found its very sad!
Being out in that water and I cant even imagine what they felt when it turned dark and u out there holding on to a boat and 12 foot waves constantly hitting u..u dont know what u would do in that situation. so dont think u know what happened cuz u wasnt there and wasnt int hat situation..it had to be a ***!!!
Cooper's wife didnt seem very sad to me either but i'm gonna say maybe she was in shock or people do grieve different. those 2 black dudes was very nice looking and its just sad!

Never underestimate the hatred of a bitter and angry white boy, whose never realized his dreams. He never went pro and the "bros" as you referred to them did. The fact that another white boy may have been collateral damage in his scheme means nothing. White people kill white people every hour of the day around the world. I agree with a few previous posters, I don't see anything fishy about it. Seriously people, watch "I *** Be Alive" on Discovery Channel sometime...People have died under similar *** while being lost at sea...You don't have any drinking water, you get dehydrated, some make the mistake of drinking the sea (salt) water which makes them hallucinate...Some just give up hope. You never know how someone will react when they look death in the eye.
Its a very sad story, and my prayers go out to their families.
There was something about this that was suspicious to me too. Not that it couldn't happen the way he said it did. It was something about the surviror. He didn't seem to care that the others did not survived. Someone asked him how he felt and did he have *** about the experience. He said no he did not and he felt great. It was as if he was glad to be rid of the others.

The story do keep changing and if you seen the boat it was only room for ONE PERSON to hold on to the motor...4 people could not have held on that motor and the boat didnt have any gripping handles and once the water keep hitting the edges becomes slippery...its just sad because we can come up with all the theories but those men ARE DEAD! First off. let me send out my condolences to the family and friends of these men. One or a few of them may read this, and I would not want to disrespect them in any way. This is just so sad.
First of all there is no sources say, in this. There was only one source , and the was the 4th man, .."Schuyler"..who by the way.. is acting real shadey...the only man who happened to survive.
His take on what happened was foggy at best. His refusal to speak directly to the media..is disturbing as well. After rest and relaxation, the story of what happened should be clear. Yet, His nonchalant attitude about this raises eyebrows. . It's just that Empathy is on his side, so he is not being pressed for specifics.
I for one, do not believe these gentleman gave up . I heard Cory's father on Larry King that *** insist that his son would never have given up..and just swam off to die. Why swim off. Just go under and drown.
Nah...I personally think it came down to a matter of not all of these very athletic average weight of 200lb men.. being able to hold on to this small sinking boat..
But not a situation, where all but one, so happened to "give up" and swim off into the deep.
The life jackets were found almost 16 miles away from the boat, so how would Schuyler have known that they took them off and gave up?
I believe there was likely an unfair *** of an ability of all of the men to hang on to the boat and decision had to be made. Let's just say it became an each man for himself type situation, with some words and blame maybe even being tossed around...and only one survived. Question is,..and what price?
I believe Cory and Marquis were gentleman and took the high road...they were likely forced to have to go swim for help if anything..because Schyuler would not let go of his clinging to that boat...

Secondly I don't know what to believe. Hypothermia probably set in and even the diving experts say you only survive for so long in the water. You also have to consider that they're are sharks in the water. We may never really know what happened.
Such a tragedy. Especially that I'm a Raiders fan. It's heartbreaking for the family not having closure due to them being missing at sea. Truly sad.
I Survived on the Bio channel had a black family that lost 4 family members who drowned. They were about three miles out to sea and could see everyone on shore but no one could see them in the water. They died similar to the guys above. Check it out. Some scary sh!t.

I don't know ya'll, salt water, heat, the cold all three of these can cause delirious reactions. And what the NFL players did really does coincide with the reactions of folks stranded in the water. I think the man that survived, survived b/c he meant in his heart that " his mother would not attend his funeral"

the question indeed is when does hyperthermia set in then? The report the surviving player gave was that the 2 black guys gave up like 3 to 4 hours later...as they took off their vests...and floated into the waves.., basically giving up.

But yet it never set in on him? ..He held on nearly 46 hours later..when he was finally rescued..clinging to the boat.
Everyone's first question was where did the other guys go off to...?
I have questioned to lone survivor's story since he initially changed his story. Now this... Why would they assume no one would try to rescue them, it's not as if their loved ones didn't know they went fishing? Cooper's boat was stil at the landing dock. He would have been missed at some point. There are many holes in this guys story and hopefully the truth will come out...whatever it is.
@kimkelmor.. We have to keep in mind that it was dark when the two black guys took off their life jackets. It was dark, they were scared, and they were over 30 miles away from land. I'm not a swimmer, but I'm assuming that trying to swim in strong currents would prevent mobility if they still had vests on. With or without vest, the waves would've taken them under eventualy ------------------ I see what you are saying. It's definately all probable. But i guess i'm having a hard time believing that they just took off their vest...and just gave up, which is what the survivor stated. The giving up part is the issue.

Just got with my fellow boater friends and to break it down, here are the rules:
Rules of 50
1 - An average adult person has a 50/50 chance of surviving a 50 yard swim in 50 degree F. water. 2 - A 50 year old person in 50 degree F water has a 50/50 chance of surviving for 50 minutes
Predicted Survival Time average adult in 50 degree F water)
Swimming slowly - 2 hours Treading water - 2 hours Holding still - 2 3/4 hours **H.E.L.P. position - 4 hours Huddle - 4 hours Wearing a PFD - 7 hours (personal floatation device)
They were in 60 degree water so the survival times aren't that far off.
Mild Hypothermia - the person feels cold, has violent shivering and slurred speech.
Medium Hypothermia - the person has a certain loss of muscle control, drowsiness, incoherence, stupor and exhaustion.
Severe Hypothermia - the person collapses and is unconscious and shows signs of respiratory distress and/or cardiac arrest probably leading to death.
They would've been inbetween medium and severe hypothermia.
Something is very fishy about this guy's story. Did he slip those other NFLers some pills earlier that day or what? Cuz usually WE put faith in GOD to help us. Them dudes just lost it, just like that?!??!? WTH, helped him keep his sanity? When he was all alone, in the middle of the ocean, in rough waters??? HUH???

That one talks about how delirium sets in with extreme dehydration, impact of hypothermia, etc. and how there were only two survivors out of five on that episode. I think people really are reading too much into this and putting too much stock into them being athletes...The survivor is just blessed that they found him when they did or else he would have been gone too in another hour or so...

I think he could have selfishless clung to that boat..when they probably should have rotated, or took turns sharing and supporting one another.

The survivor initially said that they somehow became seperated from the boat, because they were all together at first. How? and where? He is not giving specifics.
The missing men have yet to be found anywhere near the boat. Where are they?
Later he said that they abandoned their vest and gave up. Drifting off into the waves... Even the coast guards said he may have been dilusional when he said that mess.
why would they ALL give up? Something is not right with the lone survivor and this story. That's the problem.

You realize that hundreds of people get lost at sea and never get found. The people in I Survived was just 3 miles off shore and could see the cars, boats and everything and no one could see them. The tide kept moving them in but nobody saw them.
So this guy comes up with the perfect crime but it has one flaw. HE MIGHT DIE TOO!?!

On I *** Be Alive, they got hypothermia, went delusional and one just gave up. Another got eaten by sharks. I think the last one went crazy and just started swimming away from the boat and was eaten by sharks. The sharks circled the boat for days banging into their bodies. I guess trying to get them away from the boat. There was a lot of crazy sh!t that went on with them. Only one of them kept his sanity. You have to watch it.
On I Survived. The two daughters were on top of the boat. Their mom, dad and husbands were in the water. The mom was the first to go, she died of hypothermia. The two husbands started talking gibberish and the father tried to talk to them to keep their minds straight. One just let go of the boat and before anyone knew it he was too far away from the boat for them to pull back in. One wife was holding onto her husband looking him straight in the eye, talking to him and she said she saw the life drain from them and he was dead. Holding him in her arms looking him in his eyes. That's they way he died. The father was the last one in the water and started talking gibberish and the daughters kept talking to him to keep his mind straight. He kept talking about letting go of the boat and going to sleep for a few minutes. The girls grabbed him and pulled him as far onto the boat as they could. The mother and husbands eyes turned yellow right before they died. The father's eyes had started turning yellow and the girls knew he was close to dying.
They kept yelling at the people on shore and no one could hear them. Finally the tied brought them close enough were people eventually saw them. The father suffered hypothermia but survived because his daughters pulled him as far onto the boat as they could so he couldn't drown.
This happened in Houston. It was a yearly family boating trip so they were all experienced boaters. There were search parties that couldn't find them and they were only a few miles off shore.
I'm sure Bleakley wasn't imagining seeing lights. He saw lights, it was his time. It's sad that these men lost their faith so easily. All that adversity those black men endured all their lives and they were the first ones to throw in the towel.
They would have found my skeletal remains on top of that boat because I wouldn't have jumped into nothing.

Was there a fight for a spot on that boat..? because clearly all of them could not cling to it, because of their size and weight?
I'm not surprised the brothers may have given up, left it in Gods hands. Think about the places the mind can take you being surrounded by unforgiving water and complete darkness and the crashing sounds of waves and the storm. Yep i believe they said '***, i'ma leave this to god.' white boys are conditioned with the hero mentality, they believe they ARE Gods, they want their Hollywood ending -yeah- they may have held on a little longer. sad sad sad story. You realize that hundreds of people get lost at sea and never get found. The people in I Survived was just 3 miles off shore and could see the cars, boats and everything and no one could see them. The tide kept moving them in but nobody saw them.
So this guy comes up with the perfect crime but it has one flaw. HE MIGHT DIE TOO!?!

Like I said a loooong time ago. This story and the partial story the guy gave when they pulled him out of the water is SUSPECT. On CNN they said the FBI was waiting to investigate the survivor once he was in better condition.
After how many years of slavery, I don't believe black people have gotten this far without the desire to survive. They weren't even lost at sea that long for them to go completely insane like that. I think the survivor had something to do with their demise.

Yup me too, My older brother who en i was a infant died by drowning in fla where my dad is from. my dad was up here while he was on vacation to see his mother. My dad never ever got over that. He was always cautious of me and my sister around water and made sure we learned how to swim. As a matter of fact I later joined the navy. RIP Dukes!!!! If any wrong doing happened rest assure *** will comeback around!!! Karma is a Mother ***!!! The family has my sympathy!!!
I do not believe this story that the survivor has reported. What black man you know would just say F**K it, I’ma just float away in the sea??? Not one!!!!!!! I don't believe that because the prior news paper said only three had a life jacket and one had a floation cushion now Media said they all removed their life jackets. Now this doesn't sound right. and if they are were on top of the boat hypothermia had not set in. This still doesn't sound right but you know what only that man and God know what happen to the other three

From the beginning this story sounded too hard to believe.
The survivor wouldn't get up off of any information for days. We know he was dehydrated but in this situation time was of the ESSENCE and the longer he waited to provide info. the better the chances of this B.S. story seeming believable to folks. Some folks.
First of all, I believe being stranded and surrounded by water can make anybody feel helpless and hopeless.
I DON'T believe that the sense of helplessness would make a person take off the one SAVING GRACE they have- a life jacket. Even if they felt like no one was coming for them, you telling me that ALL 3 felt like removing their life jackets was the way to go? I don't think so.
I think this guy gave this story of all 3 players removing their life jackets so that when and if the life jackets are found people will think 'Oh look we've found their life jackets, they must have been eaten or drowned or both.. Makes perfect sense...just like Schuyler said.

I guess some of u dont remember the movie castaway. He had built that boat and was rowing home and after a while he put his oars in the water and gave up. He was found but I mean if u in the middle of the ocean and all you see is water around you, I can understand losing hope. I might have a better hold on my sanity only because I have my children to live for, but who knows what was going through their heads!
Am I the only one that see that this story does not make sense....what black (might I add that Im black)guy or anyone you kno would take their vest off and start swimming away from other people...human nature keeps us together plus try to survive no matter what, what I think It was a survival thing after the boat flipped and they didnt have their vest on....panicked tried to get back to the boat but the one that got saved beat them off the boat to get his spot on the boat, thats why he had nothing to say for awhile after he got saved besides they drifted off...I think they all didnt have vest on seen one but the one that got saved put it on swam to the boat or was by the boat and kicked the others away after they couldnt find the other vest and tried to get his or on the boat....thats just human nature!!!!

The authorities should do a thorough investigation. I do not believe this. I believe the survivor knows more than what he's letting on. This just seems far-fetched. All of these guys just lost their mind and gave up on life. I mean they had everything to lose. I smell a rat. Dead man(men) tell no tales.
Well when I first heard that there was a survivor that Monday morning. The only thing he said was the storm came, the boat flipped over and the others "just drifted away in the sea" he said nothing about any of them going crazy and the first thing I thought was how come hes the one left hugging on cooper's boat. MSBC also reported that his legs and arms were bruised. I know if it was my boat I would have first one to decide whether or not I would be the one hugging the engine.
To be honest it didnt look like all of them could fit up there either. Look at the picture of the guy when they found him and you tell me if there was room for 4 big guys

Ok, first of all, RIP to the deceased. But..i feel better now because i'm not the only one who thinks there is a lot more to this story than is being told. Mzarrogance..i'm with you ! I saw the interview with Marquis Cooper's wife, and i'm telling you, she didn't seem at all sad, tearful, or fearful. As a matter of fact, i think i saw her smile just a little. It almost looked like she was trying not to giggle, and when i mentioned it, other people were trying to make me feel bad for saying what i saw. Lo and behold..she is the NFL wife who filed for the death certificate. My guess is to get the insurance money quickly. Look, what's swimming around in my head isn't about race, it's about survival. --Two of these men were NFL players, which means they were more physically fit than most people. The survivor was examined afterwards, and the Dr. said that he survived primarily due to his fitness and conditioning, and that most would've died. --The pics i saw of the survivor were not of him clinging to the side of the boat. He was sitting on top of the underside. Perhaps that was the safest place to be..on TOP of it. Was there enough room for all 4 of them to sit on top of the underside ? It didn't look like it to me. --Why would two NFL players think that no one was going to come looking for them ? I mean, it's not like Peyton Manning and Reggie Bush were missing but still..hellooo..they are professional football players, so of course that's going to be news, and someone will come looking for them. --Marquis had a small child. I would think that he would hold on and want to live for his child, if nothing else. If Corey had children, the same would apply to him. --If someone is tired from clinging to the side of a boat, and thinks they see lights that are close enough for them to swim to, why would they take off their life preserver ? They're tired, right ? --How are you going to swim underwater to get life vests and only get a cushion for yourself ? I don't believe that for a minute. I think he's trying to make himself look selfless so that people won't suspect him. --Professional football players are not the kind of people to 'just give up'. They play through pain all of the time. One played for the worst team in the league, and the other played for a lot of teams in a *** time. Neither of them quit football, so why would they quit on their lives ? --Again..was there enough room on the underside of the boat for them all to sit on it without it rolling over ?! The story did change a little. At one time, he made it sound like Corey and Marquis took off their vests and drifted off to sea at the same time, not a day or two apart. I don't know these people, and i don't mean to offend anyone. If i'm wrong, i'm sorry, but i'm sayin..this doesn't sound right, and it doesn't feel right either. God forbid if the survivor and Marquis' wife end up getting together from 'comforting each other through the loss'..because then all of these questions will be answered. Oh yeah..we aren't the only ones speculating. ESPN comment section under the story referenced by the link above are buzzing as well..so this ISN'T a Black thing, OK ?
not sure if i believe this story or not. it just doesn't sound right. like the tabloids are more than likely making this *** up like they make up everything else. i do know that hypothermia makes you delusional and confused so they wouldn't have been thinking in their right minds at all. however, if all of them were hanging onto the boat at some time why didn't they all just flip the boat back over and get in. it's not like it wasn't on the surface of the water.
Amen! GoTtAd this story is far from over. At first I didnt pay it much attention but its Hot all over the net. Reports saying these guys where not close friends, the two NFLers where close and the two white dudes where childhood friends. The two white dudes worked at a Gym in Tampa called LA Fitness where the two NFLers worked out. The two white dudes wanted to become NFLers and couldnt make it out of USF (probably drugs) the two NFLers didnt smoke, drink alcohol or do drugs. Both NFLers where schedule to leave Tampa in 2 days to return to their teams training camps. People should really pray for these men families to find out the truth because what everyone is asking why would 3 men stay in the water and just let one man take the safety position, being in the water is what killed three and being out the water is what saved one. He is the only witness. People are saying they where ***, the other white dude is still alive, another boat was involved, who knows what happened but God and the survivor who has changed his story daily or what these men went through before they where pushed overboard. I hope the real story will come out soon. If they dont investigate this with this many unanswered questions then I hate to say it, it will be because they where Black, because I really believe that if two black NFLers came back and left two college boys out in the Ocean I believe those two NFLers would be in Jail right now.
