: MediaTakeOut.com told you yesterday that there's something REAL FISHY about the way that Richard Jefferson broke it off with his fiance Kesha Ni'Cole Nichols. Well now the good folks over at the NY Post caught up with him to get his side of things - here's what he had to say to them:
“There was a lot of stress and tension in the relationship. We’ve been through a lot — but we just couldn’t continue,” said Jefferson, sounding upset during a telephone interview.How does that saying go ... thou doth protest too much ....But at least Nichols got a nice parting gift — Jefferson, who was traded from the Milwaukee Bucks to the San Antonio Spurs last month, said he’s giving her a “six-figure” settlement so she can start a new life.
“I won’t say a negative word about Kesha. She is one of my best friends,” said Jefferson, who courted for nearly five years.
He said things came to a head when they celebrated July 4 in LA, a week before their planned July 11 wedding at the luxurious Mandarin Oriental on Columbus Circle.
After Nichols boarded a plane back to New York the next day, Jefferson said, he sent her the devastating e-mail.
“Sometimes you might write an e-mail to get your thoughts down right,” he explained.
After Nichols — and the message — arrived in New York, the couple spoke by phone for two hours, Jefferson said.
“It was a conversation Kesha and I had,” he said, adding only that it was “a combination of things” that led to the split.
Jefferson said they haven’t spoken in a week.
“It’s been an emotional time for both of us,” he said. “I know she’s hurt. I’m hurt, too.”
The couple had planned to top off their $500,000 wedding with a honeymoon in London, where they had tickets to one of the Michael Jackson comeback shows.
Of the money he’s giving Nichols, Jefferson said, “I’m not trying to buy her off. She has a lump sum to help her move on.”
He added, “I’ve made my mistakes in this relationship, 100 percent. But at the end of the day, there were some people who were responsible for the demise of it.”
He insisted a rumor he’s gay had nothing to do with the breakup.
“I’m not gay,” Jefferson said. “That couldn’t be any further from the truth. I have nothing to hide.”

Richard Jefferson joined the show to clear up rumors about how and why he backed out of his wedding.
-- Jefferson wanted to clear up rumors he pulled out two hours before the wedding, which was supposed to be Saturday, July 11.
"It wasn't the 11th hour," Jefferson said. "We decided that Sunday we weren't going to continue with our nuptials.
He said he e-mailed her on the Sunday before to let her know. On Monday, he called his family. On Tuesday, she called her family.
-- Jefferson also said the wedding didn't cost him $2 million. And he didn't leave his credit cards for his friends.
Jefferson said don't believe "unnamed sources." Jefferson said people made things up. None of his friends would have called the New York Post.
-- Jefferson said that he did e-mail her because he wanted to get his thoughts down in an organized fashion.
-- Jefferson explained why they decided to end it. "We'd been arguing non-stop," Jefferson said. "There was a lot of screaming and crying."
-- Jefferson reportedly gave his former fiancee a six-figure amount. "I didn't have to do anything," Jefferson said. "I chose to give her an amount."
-- Jefferson said he wasn't relieved or happy about this. "I'm upset," Jefferson said. "I lost my best friend."
-- Dan asked Jefferson about allegations about his sexuality that were addressed in the New York Post.
"You can't fight the internet," Jefferson said of rumors about his sexuality. "They start spreading rumors and it starts snow-balling."
Jefferson said the stories about his sexuality and other aspects of his life are getting to him. "That's the furthest thing from the truth, and it sort of *** me off."
-- Jefferson said he wants his ex-fiancee, Kesha Ni'Cole Nichols, to come out and tell the truth and clear up a lot of the rumors.
"I probably will reach out to her in the next day or so," Jefferson said.
