: MediaTakeOut.com learned that all HECK nearly broke loose at a Chicago performance of the play The Color Purple.
Apparently Fantasia was supposed to be in the cast - but she called in sick and somebody else took her place. That's when, according to a number of MediaTakeOut.com readers - all heck broke loose.
One member of the audience tells MediaTakeOut.com, "There were these two real ghetto girls and they kept saying 'where's Fantasia' 'who is that' 'I want my money back' all while the girl [Fantasia's replacement] was trying to sing, it was real crazy."
And then, MediaTakeOut.com learned that things got even crazier when the play let out. The insider expleined, "people wanted their money back and when [a play manager] told them no, they started threatening him. I thought a riot was going to break out."
No word yet on what caused Fannie to miss the performance. Hopefully she's OK.
The Good and Bad of this: The Good- Fantasia being in this show is bringing people to the Theater who wouldn't otherwise have gone. The Bad- Since these people aren't familiar with the Theater they don't know the "show must go on". And that the understudy is, sometimes, as good as (if not better than) the star. One good case is that Lilias White was a replacement for Jennifer Holliday in Dreamgirls. Lilias went on to win a Tony Award!
I was there at the 2pm performance. They announced as the curtains were going up that there was an understudy for Fantasia. I immediately went to the box office. I had paid $200 to her Fantasia (2 tickets, 4th row center). I had already seen Color Purple years ago and was only there to see Fantasia. The 3 remaining shows were either sold out or cancelled. They offered no refunds, claiming she got sick off a turkey sandwich on her way to the venue. They were rude and obnoxious. People got angry. Fantasia is known for being a "no show" without an explanation to her fans.
For all of you who are making ignorant comments concerning her no-shows in NY, she had to undergo surgery on her voice box. It was initially thought that she would never sing again. For those who go to plays to see a featured performer wait until it put on film and you can be sure your favorite will perform.
I am not surprised to hear this at all. I planned a vacation in NY to see her performance but only to get there and be informed she had called in sick and an understudy would be replacing her.They gave us refunds if we didn't stay.We tried it again about a month later, thankfully that day she decided to come to work. However, we could barely hear what the hell she was sayin but we enjoyed the show otherwise. She has been blessed, given an opportunity and its too bad that this lack of professionalism precedes her talent.

I would have wanted my money back too. I live in Az and if a play came without the main character present who is a featured artist at that in it...I think that it would be only fair that the audience be given that option to return to another show or get a refund. That is like Tyler Perry coming to my city and the real Madea is a fill in. WTF!I don't think s[SPAM]ooo. Fill-ins do occur sometimes but they can't be the main artist who is the head-liner. Asstcasting, thank you for all of your indepth information regarding the show and Fantasia. However, what I don't understand is all of the blatant negative comments against everyone, calling folks ignornant, dumbasses and thus...yet you are on here posting in an uneducated manner. However, I digress. I was at the Saturday 2:00 show yesterday. There wasn't pandemonium from what I saw. The show was not sold out at all! Their were scores of empty sections. Just as someone stated they didn't announce Fantasia, was not performing until the currents were beginning to raise up.
Numerous people walked out, wanting a refund. They were entitled to their disappointment. We understand that people get sick and things happen. However, they are still entitled to their opinions and displeasure. I don't know if refunds were received? However, they didn't return to the balcony nose-bleed sections were most of the tickets sold. They very well could've stayed and sat in the empty rows, which there was an abundance of. Many people moved down to closer viewing and were very intuned with the performances. The only thing I didn't like was the unprofessionalism of some of the ushers.
EVERYONE LISTEN! Being in a play let alone a MUSICAL can be very strenuous on your voice and health in general. *** after ***, the audience expects you to bring it like it's never been brpught before. HAVE ANY OF YOU EVER CALLED IN SICK FROM WORK BEFORE? It's THE COLOR PURPLE...NOT FANTASIA IN CONCERT! The play FEATURES HER, but it's an ENSEMBLE PIECE! Obviously this play is drawing crowds who normally do not attend REAL PLAYS, because if they did, they would not have acted in such a crass manner..:)
I would also like to add their were numerous people in wheel chairs, walkers and crutches having a hard time. The ushers weren't on top of their job and some of them were condescending to people who didn't understand the sitting because of the three sections of stairs for far left/right and midsection. I don't understand how entire sections didn't receive programs such as myself. If you know your ticket sales how could you not accommadate your patrons with programs. I've been too numerous stage plays. This was the most unprofessional service I've ever witnessed. That's why people were upset.
May I state again, people understand illnesses but it was the manner in which things were handled. I wasn't aware of Fantasia severe illnesses. I never read the serious surgeries and recouperations that had to take place. However, just like standard employees who fall greatly ill, they take a leave and it's announced and vendors know what they are getting/dealing with upfront.
Ghetto azz people. All they had to do at the start of the play was ask for a refund when they did not notice Fantashia there. They waited to the end of the play to ask for their money back. I would have told them hell naw too. LOL
That is like eating and cleaning your plate off then asking for a refund claiming the food was nasty. Ghetto.
All, I live in Chicago and was out the 2:00 show on yesterday and we were very upset and tried getting our money back. Fannie has a hang over from the *** before hanging out to wee hours in the morning on Friday with people I know. So that some ***. I will never support her again. Opray should refund people, I will write to her.
OK. I'm having one of those "ashamed of my people" moments. The play is The Color Purple, NOT the Fantasia Show. It includes a CAST of extremely talented African-Americans. What happened to their support? My husband and I saw it on Friday and the woman who portrayed Sophia gave Fantasia kudos because she was already not feeling well. Anyone concerned about Fantasia? Or do they think she just decided to chill for the day? I don't think she has that choice. This production is a BIG deal and Fantasia doesn't run the show--she is an employee. Having said that--Fantasia rocks!!
I'am a Fantasia fan, but like many other posters have already said, this is a play, NOT a Fantasia concert. The reason for going is to see the play and the performance of the entire cast. But I guess only people whose idea of a play doesnt stretch beyond "Madea's Family Reunion" would not know that. Come on people, can we get a little more "cultured" when it comes to the arts? Leave the ghetto attitudes and the popcorn in the purse antics at home. Dont get me wrong, I do love some Madea though.

First of all, I am ashamed to know that any of our people would act like that! Too know that people would actually act a fool in representing Chicago hurts! For the two "little girls" that acted like idots during the play, you should really be ashamed of yourself! Fantasia was never scheduled to perform on Friday or Sunday. If you would have read your ticket purchase, you would have known that. My family and I purchased tickets for a Thursday because unlike you, we READ and found out that Fantasia had two days that she would not be performing. Please Black people, reading is fundamental!
