People always complaining that the police need to be more involved in stopping crime. I think the community needs to be more involved. Every kid in this school and their parents knows the names of the boys that did this. So why is it taking so long to get them arrested? Apparently, a gang fight broke out on Thursday in Roseland, in Southside Chicago, and Derrion was killed in the rumble. Initial reports were that he had refused to join a gang, resulting in his beating death. However, since the amateur video has been made available, it appears he just got caught up in the fighting and was beaten to death.
Chicago police believe this gang fight is yet another in a series of fights and tensions that have been ongoing between Fenger High School students and rival gang members.
As you can see in the video below, there is a significant group of people fighting, punching, swinging boards and kicking in the street. Fox Chicago obtained the video which shows someone being hit by one of the boards and kicked and beaten after he falls to the ground. Albert died from blows from one of those boards. Also on the video, someone can be heard yelling, ‘Darrion, get up!’
Albert’s mother, Anjanette Albert, says that other student’s have told her that Derrion got drawn into the fight when he tried to help another student. Other students and staff from the Agape Community Center nearby pulled Derrion out of the fight, but it was too late to save him.
Although faces were not easily visible from the tape, police have been able to identify several of the perpetrators. They are using the tape to find clues as to who is responsible for the death of Derrion Albert. As of now there are four people being questioned about the attack, three are over 17 years of age.
Albert’s memorial service has been postponed until Monday at the request of Chicago Public Schools.
The five-minute melee left Darrion dead from a blow to the head and three other students hospitalized.

The young man that was killed didn't do anything for this to have happened to him except attempt TO WALK HOME FROM SCHOOL! This whole thing took place outside of a community center where kids would go for after school programs. There were 3 other young men killed in Chicago in past recent weeks two 17 and one 19 year old. The 17&19 year old's were sitting on their grandmothers porch COUSINS SHOT! This is the most selfish thing I heard. It is not always about ourselves. If blacks thought like this then, we would not even be sitting here having this discussion. Every generation especially blacks should be looking out for the next. Many blacks nowadays have been giving the resources to move ahead thanks to the generation who fought and died before them. However the generation before this one is not doing this. Many older blacks share the same struggle with young blacks today. But we are too lazy or too oppressed to take a stand and give this new generation better opportunities. That is true. It's the reason why I only support blacks who are educating our youth because they are the one's who need our support. How can we have more black leaders if we don't support blacks who are out trying to make a difference?! We as a race need to change our mind state and support positive. I went to a specialized HS that was right across the street from a regular HS, and booy did the beefs get crazy. Like the regular HS would try to pick on our students cuz our student body was "gifted". But our school was filled w/ many "gifted" inner city mofo's who were from the ghetto's and projects as well as some better-off suburban kids but the inner city kids wouldn't play that shyt either, so we had fights like this often w/ knives and boxcutters and one kat brought a hammer in once too. UPDATE: Three teenagers have been charged with first-degree murder in Derrion Albert's beating death.
Silvanus Shannon, 19, Eugene Riley, 18, and Eric Carson, 16, all of Chicago, were charged as adults ordered held without bond, the Tribune reports.
Prosecutors declared Albert an "innocent bystander" in the fight that led to his death.

My 17 year old brother comes home with videos on his cell phone everyday with fights that he sees at his school. I went to the same school he did (finished in 2002) and in my 4 years there, i could count the number of fights that i saw on one hand.. He comes home with dozens of footage everyday. The charges were announced after Chicago police lined up in a show of force outside Fenger this morning. Students trickled into the school at staggered intervals through the morning. Most arrived on foot wearing their standard uniform of khaki pants and black shirts.
Police patrolled the area in squad cars and staged a visible presence at the school's entrance.
"We want to provide reassurance to the public that there's a police presence and they can feel safe in the neighborhood and kids can feel safe at school," said Morgan Park District Commander Michael Kuemmeth.
Today was the first day Fenger has been open since the fatal melee that swept up Albert, an honor roll student. All Chicago public schools were closed Friday for a staff day. A march and vigil for Albert outside Fenger, organized by his family will be held at 1 p.m. Originally, the vigil had been planned for Sunday, but Albert's family agreed to postpone it at the request of the Chicago Public Schools, said Albert's grandfather Joseph Walker.
Meanwhile, four people were being questioned in connection with the attack, as an amateur video helped police identify several participants in the melee outside the Agape Community Center, 342 W. 111th St. That video was provided to Fox affiliate WFLD-Ch. 32., which turned it over to detectives Friday night. Fox said it paid its typical freelance fee of about $300 for exclusive rights to the video.
Before the announcement of charges, Chicago Police spokesman Roderick Drew said investigators have identified several people from the video, and were questioning four of them.
In a press conference at Police Headquarters regarding security at Fenger, 11220 S. Wallace St., Calumet Area Detective Division Commander Eddie Welch said the video has helped the investigation.
When asked if police are encouraging people to watch the video to see if they can identify anyone in it, Drew said, "We would rather have [the] people who were involved in it, innocent or not, to call police."

The man heard on the tape should be arrested for allowing it to continue, as well as the camera holder.(may be the same person?) I don't live very far from that beating. I may have taught those kids, it is getting TERRIBLE here. Today is 10-1-09 and those same kids today got into another fight and I saw the whole thing. Boys running, 10 police cars almost ran into my car trying to get to the fight. The mayor is a JOKE, trying to get the Olympics here and can't even clean up the city! Because of violence like this, I am giving myself a year to get out of this city, it is shot to HELL!

My sheer curiosity and needing to know and see everything made me watch it but I'm kind of regretting I did. It get at me over and over watching this that I'm watching someone be murdered...all those people there watched him get murdered and did nothing. Good Samaritan Law needs to be put in to full effect no BS. Watching that happen to someone is wrong, wrong, wrong, especially to a kid. Him being an honor students is more sad but even if he was a little trouble maker he was a kid and he got BEAT TO DEATH. Savagely beaten to death in the street with so many people watching...
