: First off, we gotta tell you that nobody gave us any free passes to the film. We had to spend our own little 10 dollars to see it - so we're gonna tell it like it is.
Now THE GOOD: The acting in this movie was GREAT. Mo'Nique killed her role and so did Gabby Sibide. Even non-actors Mariah Carey, Sherri Sheppard, and Lenny Kravitz all did a great job.
As good as the acting was, the story line was even better. It was very difficult to watch at times, but there wasn't a moment when we weren't into it. In all, this was a really well made movie.
So I know what you're asking? If you liked it so much, what's up with bad and the ugly??? Well read on . . .
The BAD: Why is the heck did Oprah and Tyler Perry only release this film in 18 theaters???? Luckily we bought our tickets in advance, but while waiting on line we saw LITERALLY DOZENS of Black folk who couldn't get in to see the film because it was sold out.
It doesn't seem to make ANY sense to build up the buzz about a film and then not let people see it.
And the film was only released in NYC, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Chicago - so if you're one of the 80% of the Black Folk in AMERICA who don't live in one of these cities - you couldn't see the film.
They’ll probably release it nationwide next week, but by then the movie already seems old and bootleg man will probably already have it. Oh well . . .
THE UGLY: : As much as we liked the movie, we were EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED by the blatant colorism in the choice of casting. The three main "good characters" in the film, Miss Rain (Paula Patton), Mrs Weiss (Mariah Carey), and Nurse John (Lenny Kravitz) were all played by biracial actors. While all of the "evil" characters in the film including Precious' mom (Mo’Nique) and dad were dark skinned Black actors.
We can't believe that this was just a coincidence, especially since it was directed by an African American. This is the kind of mess that we expect from Tyler Perry and Lee Daniels, but we're surprised that someone like Oprah would co-sign that mess.
Anyways, all in all, we think it's a very good movie that touches on some VERY relevant and important issues to the Black community. But unfortunately because of the BLATANT colorism in the movie, we can't recommend it to you guys. Sorry for being such a downer, but we gotta call it like we see it.
It will be releases nationwide in a few days I think
Either way, I'm impressed MTO commented on Colorism
Colorism is still discussed because it is still a HUGE PROMBLEM in the Black community to the poster above. How many posters do we have up here who call light as right and rudely comment on darker complextions???
MTO keeps this color thing going. Only someone with no other accomplishments to talk about would think that they're better because they have light skin. In about 30 years, when White folks have liver spots, varicose veins, and crepe-y skin, my melanin-enriched skin tone will have gorgeously stood the tests of time!
As far as the film, I didn't care for how the storyline jumped around. The actresses that played Precious' classmates at the alternative school were very underrated and might not get the credit they deserve. The Jamaican girl and the hiphop girl with the black lipstick stole the scenes at times.
Secondly, I was trying to picture why they chose such a fair-complexion child to play her daughter, "Mongo". She didn't look related to any of Precious' family members.
Finally, I hated the way it ended.
I know for a fact they did the limited release first to see how it did and then its suppose to be released everywhere else this weekend. It won't be in DC until this friday. As far as the light dark skin thing. ITS BLACK ACTORS WORKING WHO CARES...grow up! Whether you have lived it, been exposed to it or have not clue to not go see a movie that is about something of substance and happens daily is a disgrace. If some ignorant fool like Lil Wayne was making a fake gangsta movie you would beg borrow and steal to go see that mess but this you won't? BLACK FOLKS WE ARE OUR OWN WORST ENEMY!
I will say that I really like Paula Patton...but she is NO way is a good representation of Mrs. Rain as she is described in the book...they made sure to make Precious as true to description as possible...but took liberties with other characters...Rain was supposed to be a bit less polished and have dread locks
Another thing I wanted to point out as well...
This story was so dark, according to the book, but I felt that it got totally watered-down with too much comedy. Seems the message is that as black people, we can't handle serious issues without turning everything into a sitcom.
By the way, I HATED the way this stupid movie ended.
How ignorant can MTO be???? If you read the *** book first before just going to the movies- you would have known that the author describe Ms(Blue)Rain, Ms. Weiss and Nurse John as light-skinned,or a Latino ethinic group. Precious described herself as fat and Black as well as her mother. READERS: DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST BEFORE BELIEVING SOME OF THESE STORIES!!!!
MTO you guys obviously didn't read the book. That's how it was written. They describe the male nurse ms. Rain & the social worker as light skinned. A part of the book is based on the main character's color complex. Before you go crying about it read the book. I suggest you take that part down. Don't discourage anyone from seeing such a powerful movie. I hope people read the book also. It's VERY good
Mom2Girls Flag post It is also important to know that in the book Precious suffered from serious colorism....I mean big time. She actually saw good as light and dark as bad...so I would not blame that theme directly on the casting/producers... ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Good point. That's another thing. They way it was conveys in the movie probably won't be understood by most of this dumb-downed, tv pop-culture saturated generation.
I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING IT. THE BOOK WAS POWERFUL AND REALLY NOT FUNNY(VERY CURIOUS TO SEE WHERE THE COMEDY COMES IN).
BUT ACTUALLY THE BOOK ITSELD SHOWED LIGHT SKINNED PEOPLE AS BEING GOOD PEOPLE ALTHOUGH I THINK THE AUTHOR WAS REFFERING MORE TO PRECIOUS' STATE OF MIND RATHER THAN THE WAY THINGS ARE.
THEY WERE ACTUALLY QUITE NICE TO MO'NIQUES CHARACTER WHO LOOKED PRETTY GOOD. SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE BIGGER AND UGLIER THAN PRECIOUS. MO'NIQUE LOOKS LIKE A *** BUT SHE IS NOT WHAT COMES TO MIND MIND WHEN I THINK OF A WOMAN SO FAT SHE DOESN'T BATHER BECAUSE SHE CAN NO LONGER FIT IN THE TUB
ok i offically think that mediatake out is special first the movie well release every were just not the same dates nov6 nov 13 nov 20 *** do yall home work please why thte hell doo yall think that its crazy the biracial people are in th movie that has nothing to do with it yall all ways trying to bring somebody down get a life please
I just REALLY REALLY don't understand your point about the complexion of the african american's in the film. Also, had you fact checked or listened to Oprah or Tyler you and the rest of the folks that did not get in said it was first limitly released you would've know to just wait!! Dang...pay attention, then you won't waste your time. They prerelease for a reason, with your background MTO you should already know the answer to that. I'm going to see it this weekend, sometimes watching it on a tv doesn't have the same affect.
AS USUAL MTO is saying stuff without knowing what they are talking about. If you all had bothered to read the book then you would have known that Precious and her mother were dark skinned people. It was one of the many stigmas she had to deal with. And Tyler Perry and Oprah both came on board as Executive Producers after the movie was created and had screened at Sundance. So they had nothing to do with how the movie was made!
B4 some of U get sensitive over my comments & speculate on my life, let me just say this is my opinion on the matter.
I haven't seen the movie yet, seeing that Mammy Oprah & the Tranny House Negro produced it, I just might catch it on bootleg, after I read the book.
I will say this though, I see Paula Patton as the 2nd coming of Halle Berry as far as her acting skill.
You know, somebody else said this. But the director is also criticized for making everything about color (which I believe having seen Precious fantasizing about a "light skin boyfriend" in the preview when in the book she wanted to ride in JFK Jr's corvette) so perhaps he was sending a message in a subliminal way?
the chick who played joann was dark skin and she's gorgeous. she was a lil hood ,but she was one of the best parts of the movie.
@tiredofurpipedreams can you explain to me if you hate black people so much, why would spend a single second on a black site? you will never see a racist comment on a spanish or white site from a black person because we don't care about y'all. it's nice to know that you care about us so much because you wouldn't be on here if you didn't.
@ I Luv Nerds...I saw the movie in Chicago, I too was very disturbed at how many parents brought young (infants to tweens) children to see this movie. Way too many inappropriate scenes for kids. I read the book and felt the movie was true to it about 75% of the time. However, Ms. Rain was a definite departure from the book description of her.
My interpetation when I read the book was diff. I think in the mind of the reader is wea imagination comes in if not blatanly given to you. With that said the teacher had dreads, and in my mind I pix brown skin, the therapist was white. Forgive me wea does nurse John come in @....it was crazy because I heard of the movie b4 I knew about the book so I have to say it was hard to sep Nique from the book...all *** all can't wait to c
You know, I read the book ages ago but I think Mariah's character was a biracial woman in the book too while the nurse was a Latino (I honestly only remember a nurse encouraging her to "Push" when she was having her baby...I don't remember one in the facility she went to live in after leaving home) so that would mean if one were to make this observation it would have to be premised on the director's completing some equation in casting the teacher. Why am I remembering dreads? I think the teacher had dreads? Now I wonder... My friend read the book last week, so I'll ask her.
Saw the movie in atl on friday and I must say that the acting was in fact superb, but the movie as a whole was very obnoxious. Too many scenes of pure comedy juxtaposed with dramatic and traumatic scenes left me confused and downright exhausted. Didn't really notice the colorism in the film but I would not recommend ppl go see it for any other reason except to support black actors. The movie was downright depressing for me and my friends. Twitter.com/luxe_cuervo
MTO. *** THE f**K up. Word.
This race baiting and black bashing is getting out of hand. Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey created an excellent movie with a relevant storyline. How dare you perpetuate that ***. This was a movie that gave BLACK actors an opportunity to show how talented we are. And this is your response to that daring accomplishment? Eat a ***.
If I wasn't tryning to keep my eye on the CIA, I would stop coming to this muf*cka altogether.
bbop212 and others who cleared it up..thanks! I was remebering bits and pieces... I think he erred in casting Paula (who I love otherwise) but not even because it implies color bias (which other critics picked up on as well) but because it's just TOO much in an already heart-rending story. I honestly didn't like the book because it was so ugly as to be almost absurd. It's unrealistic.
OH please STFU MTO with the colorism BS! Yall always trying to start some unnecessary light dark sh*t. So what if there are 3 biracial actors in the film, what does that mean? nothing. who actually goes around counting dark to light actors in a film? It's the writers on this so called website that day after day promote this "light is better" *** when most of us who are light or mixed don't even think that way at all. yall are ridiculous
Its ridiculous how MTO loves to create threads that revolve around race/color issues. This is a *** shame. And let the race war start in 1,2,3...
Most of the time I leave one comment & keep it moving, but then come back to read the debate. But today, I will not. Cuz this *** is getting very very played out and I refuse to fall into the trap.
i didnt find *** e thing wrong with the movie unlike racist *** mto lol. I read the book yrs ago and ever since then i been waiting for the movie. It was VERY good and im glad i got my tickets early lol when me and my friends got there it was already sold out and ppl had to wait another hour be4 the next one.
It was hard finding a seat though i guess everybody had the same idea to get there early
Ok MTO let me help yall out. First off this past weekend was a Pre-screening that's why it was only in limited release (personally I think it stupis to do pre-screening but whatever)anyway you guys should have known that. Secondly, I agree about the light/dark skinned thing but Tyler & Oprah got involved after the film was made. Yall should have known that as well.
While I was thinking the same thing about them casting the light skinned actors I think it was just a coincidence and that those people fit the roles well. I mean who would deliberately go looking for mixed people? Especially someone like MC lol, who would do that? I think they all played their parts well. I couldn't see any other black female actor play the character Miss Rain. Paula did a great job.
I don't care about the Light skinned dark skinned things. I don't like that blacks on the big screen always have to be poor and have problems. It is a *** shame to watch this type of thing on the big screen and Tyler and Oprah got to nerve to put out this *** image. How are black folks ever going to overcome when they keep up with these horrible stereotypes!
take that racial bullsh*t somewhere else! I'm so over this! Everything is racial to you guys! Please! Go read the book PUSH okay! Just *** up! If anyone has an issue with Color it would be MTO not anybody else...for a black website, you guys are always drudging up some hate and lies against your own people...smh...what a shame. I'm about to stop using this site for real.
FYI to the person who said Paula Patton is 100% black. Just because your parents are mainly of african decent does not mean you are not mixed. You do not come out looking that way without something else in you. No two africans in africa have children looking like her. Clearly she has white or hispanic or something in her family. Don't be silly its America.
MTO...I know this is online journalism and all but you DO know this movie is based on a book right? Uh...in the book it's written that the characters are light or dark in the different rolls and that's the reason why she thinks the way she thinks about some things. It's also based on a true story written by the girl herself.Come on now. You're really playin yourselves talking about "It figures" with Oprah and Tyler Perry casting light and dark skin people in the rolls they did. Get the info on what you're watching before you start that mess.
I agree with MTO who agreed with a few mto posters with regards to the white saviors of the flick! While I did enjoy the movie, I didn't enjoy how black women were portrayed! Even the neighbor was ab abusive, overweight abusive welfare mother! They could have had Sherry in a more powerful role! Just read the book! It was much better!
Ms. Cali you really annoy the hell out of me! You cared enough about the the Marcus Houston thread to comment on how pretty you think his latina girlfriend is, but it seems on real black issues or if a black woman is being judged you have negative or in difference *** to say! This is why I sometimes have a problem with black men dating out, and the reason is because you *** don’t care about the race as a whole, just about the black buck in ur bed breaking ur back! SMGDH!
I will say this with respect to the Paula, and Mariah! They did a great job! Mariah has come far, and Paula has been awesome since she started! Lenny wasn’t really in the movie, but he was good eye candy! He doesn’t really look bi-racial to me, never did but that just goes to show you how strong African blood is!
chelle101, Of course I'm not naive enough to think that people aren't facing horrible things ever day, but MUCH MUCH more than abuse happens to the main character. I won't ruin the movie for some... I know it seems that I'm dismissing something that makes me uncomfortable out of insensitivity, but I can assure you I am not. The author was indulgent in developing Precious's story...and that's all I'll say (for those who haven't read/seen it).
If you actually took the time to read the book it was based before seeing the movie and writing this review you would have understood the choice of actors. To go so far as to say that the producers are "colorist" shows that you did not even take the time to do your research.
By the way, the book is powerful by it's self and I encourage everyone to read it.
I see people are starting their racist *** again. Like busta said in Higher Learning "They're just mad cuz they ain't me". You hate the fact that we can come from nothing and outshine anyone. People hate the fact that we pose a threat in everything positive. This is why black ppl need to realize our worth and what power we really have. We can do anything better than anyone if we get it together. *** the haters who think other wise. Bottom line black is in, and its been in WAYYY b4 Obama. Ask Elvis Presley and all those clowns who stole from us.
It amuses me how people post comments spewing so much hate towards black people, and you can barely make out what they're saying because their grammar and spelling are so TERRIBLE!!! It really shows your STUPIDITY. Go back to 3rd grade, learn spelling, sentence formation, subject-verb agreement, etc. before you attempt to put down an entire race.
COLORISM, who push more colorism than mediatakeout? Tyler Perry has said from the beginning that he and Oprah endorsed the movie neither played any part in it's production or distribution. The commericals have said for week that the movie will have a limited release. Why does everything have to go back to color with us. We we stop seeing each other in light and dark then the world will because black folks are the worse when it comes to dark and light. @1Amandapanda- you and your black huband was filming black men who marry white whales?
I respect this review for what it is but who cares about Colorizing??
This movie is real life & the real world can be very cruel, even crueler to those with darker skinned because you have to put up with so much *** from everyone & everything.
Im more concerned with its limited release, Cadilac Records where beyonce shines as a dark character like Monique wasnt even as limited, it was only limited to certain theaters, Not whole states But my point is that This movie is Wayyy better than cadilac so its not fair. SMH Why?? Judging by the previews I just know it will be superb!!
@tiredofurpipedreams- there's nothing more unattractive than a pink azz white boy. They look like raw meat that's been sitting in the sun. Nothing more attractive than a dark, sweet, choclate brother with abs of steel, and hands of the Gods. There must be something you like about black people your taking time to comment so your envious of something. I don't care for your azz so I don't take the time to access your trash sites.

Tiredofurpipedreams English doesn’t seem to be ur 2nd, 3rd, or 4th language either u stupid ***! I highly doubt that you have an education, and FYI I am extremely intelligent and have two college degrees! Half of Dominicans are black, and all have African Ancestry so please go educate ur self, and stop being an illiterate, self hating, bigot!
@tiredofurpipedreams dumb azz judging by pic don't you know if there was still slaves your azz would be one know your history and your other comment you are assuming i care what the world thinks of me or other blacks for that matter i knew i was the shiz before i even knew who obama was ps i could say a million and 1 things about hispanics but i'm not gonna be brought down to your level
Tyler Perry always has the dark skinned man play the role of the villian. Just look at Diary of a Mad Black Woman and Madea's Family Reunion. Both abusers were dark skinned and both and "*** in shining armor" were light skinned. Tyler Perry is good for that kinda ***. It's sad that we allow this type of stereotyping and discrimination within our own race. It's unheard of in most other races. Tyler is probably attacted to light skinned men as oposed to dark skinned ones.
MTO, you have got to be F*CKING KIDDING ME.....YOU, of all people, are accusing the directors/producers of the Precious movie of engaging in COLORISM???? Uh, isn't your everyday obsession of light-sknined, long-haired, size two, high-yellow women just a little bit COLORIST???? Jesus Christ, I have heard of the pot calling the kettle black, but ya'll just took it to a whole new level. I know I don't even have to ask if you read the book.....seeing as how you STILL can't spell the lead actress' name correctly.....f*ckin' morons and STILL the embarrassment of black journalism, you make me sick!
I saw this movie when it premiered in Arundel Mills Maryland. Its is a GREAT MOVIE! It is very hard to watch but you must see this film. I don't understand why they would premier a movie in places they don't plan on showing it when it came out. I had recommended this movieto alot of friends only to be disappointed at the fact its not showing here in Maryland! What are Oprah and Tyler thinking?
@tiredofurpipedreams, I truly feel sorry for you and I will pray for you and people like you. Ignorance come in all colors.I have too many successful African American friends for your theory to be true and have seen too many poor unsuccessful white people. Bottom line its not what color you are but its about who you are as a person. :) May God Bless You!
I'm haven't even read through the comments yet, but I had to make a point. MTO, you are the last ones to talk about colorism as your threads reak of some form of colorism everyday. I did notice; however that there were a lot of biracial "good" people in the film, but doesn't this reflect how so many blacks and others think. We are a colorstruck society, and that will never, ever change until we decide to get our minds together and love ourselves.
I WILL be seeing this movie. Why tell a group of people not to see it because of a few biracial/light cast members? You can come better that.
light skinned dark skinned it does matter if you look at all of Tyler Movies the darker the people the more wrong they seem to be.... the more lighter sisters and cousins always come out like angels. I must say that I have read the book and it is called "PUSH" a very detailed yet hurtful situation and in the book there are a lot of color differences between dark and light skinned. We as a people tend to direct our feelings towards the smaller issues instead of standing tall about the real things going on and how it affects us as a people
I am appalled and irate that MTO would print such rubbish about a movie that was drenched in the serious matter of abuse. MTO blatantly reported as facts character analysis that was NOT of importance. Not that it matters the color of black since according to white America you are considered black with 1/4 of your parentage being so. This movie was sad because this is happening today-everyday to all children of all races. Let's not further separate people and by doing so take the concentration off the issue. Let's save our children from the abuse.
I saw the movie last *** and hadn't read the book since high school but the directors/producers were not being racist when casting the "good" characters. The author played on the fact that Precious believed white was better than black. The casting was intentional. Great book and great movie. A must see.
@Msstagnetti - thank you for your post directed towards tiredofurpipedreams. Clearly this person as not been educated enough to know of all the great accomplishments and contributions black people have made to this country. He/she apparently only tunes into the news and only sees the negative images of black people.
@tiredofurpipedreams - There are people of all colors and races that have caused problems and commited crimes. No one color is worse than the other. If you are a bad person, you are bad person - no matter what color. You are one of the ignorant people out there who is probably suffering from low self esteem and can only feel good by putting others down. The more you post your ignorant slurs, the more stupid and ignorant you look. This post is supposed to be about the movie 'Precious' and not your ignorance!
yall *** black folks--if you would read the *** book, you all would know that in Precious' mind, she felt as though light skinned people were better, and felt as though if she was light skinned, her life would be different. havent seen the movie but i think if you have an issue with the portrayal of blacks light/dark skin...you should take that up with the author Sapphire...she wrote it, and it sounds as if the directors have done a good job exacting how she wrote the book!
tyler perry pulled the same *** with his last movie, making the blackman a child molester, and making the mexican dude the hero! he need to make a daytime soap opera and hire some of these out of work black actors! yall know yall gonna watch, plus it would be the biggest show on tv. www.indielax.com
please, please let me inform MTO that when they send people out to review films, especially the ones based on books they should READ THE *** BOOK. There is a reason the good characters are portrayed as light skinned, as Precious [you know, the main character] PERCEIVES them to be that way. When one is abused by a certain person[s], whatever they resemble is often considered 'evil' or 'bad' constantly. I think that MTO prolly didnt go see it, they prolly read someone elses review of it and pulled the color issue from an article.
if you really paid attention to the movie colorism was a part of it (Precious always wanted a "light skinned Black BF with "good hair."')
Secondly, Paula isn't bi-racial, her parents are BLACK and are from the south and it doesn't mean her parents are "mixed" in the way many think, yeah they might have a few Whites folks in their family tree, but they aren't biracial, just two people of possibly the same complexion hooking up.
I'm beginning to think that MTO says crazy *** like this on purpose because you all CAN NOT be this unprepared?! As many have already stated, in the book Precious thinks it's better to be light skinned. AND at least they got Mariah to play the welfare worker because in the book she was WHITE! WTF, MTO! You can't recommend the movie based on "colorism"...when the movie was based on the ideas of the book?!
...MTO you are falling off. This site is becoming an after school hang out spot. I'm tired of all the light skin-dark skin commentary, the racists posts, the mulitple BS posts, some of these bloggers need to be restricted from your site. For 2010 step your game up. BTW the Mike Bloomberg ads you ran on your site was foul. You can't help a black man get elected mayor??? Is MTO run by the Klan??? Thanks to you Mike might raise the NYC transit fair again (3rd time might I add). MTO you can do better, YES YOU CAN!

WELL HEY EVERYBODY IM BACK somekinda way my account got deleted, hmm guess cause Im THE TRUTH,,anywhoo, I;m currently reading the book PUSH by SAPPHIRE, and the characters are light skin because Dark skin Overweight Low selfesteem Precious correlates Ligh Skin with Good, because she hates herself, and the MEdia does NOT portray dark skin women as in Naomi Campbell color, in a good way, yes its a BOOk, about the HORRIBLE REALITY of Abuse! Idk how the movie is because its Not released in my city however as a Darker Complected Young Women and native of GA Colorism still EXISTS! lyrics media etc
WE SHOULD SUPPORT OUR BLACK ACTORS/ACTRESSES/PRODUCERS regardless of SKIN TONE however COLORISM STILL EXISTS!! YES IT DOES IDK WHAT REGION OF THE COUNTRY YOU LIVE IN BUT ITS RELAVENT especially IN THE SOUTH, Long hair thick red bones are all I hear young guys talk about, and I'm not saying this as a "Bitter Dark Girl" no, I always get TOLD UR PRETTY FOR A DARK SKIN GIRL, like why Cant i Just be Pretty or why are you soo Shocked to see someone who is DARKER THAN A BROWN PAPER BAG PRETTY backwards!! black folks range in skin tone! ppl cant control that LOVE light to dark!
@Tiredofurpipedreams
It is apparent that someone's village just got internet access! lol. I understand that such technology can be very exciting. But I will say that there are somethings you ought to know before you go on your next grammatically flawed racist tirade. If you learn how to spell, use proper sentence syntax, and subject-noun agreement, your racist, and highly ignorant message, will become a lot easier to understand. I mean it is obvious that you want attention and people to read your simple minded and highly illiterate rant.
Also, the Dominican Republic's ethnic background is deeply rooted with African ancestry. And as much as you would like to deny it, African-Americans SHARE the same African roots as YOU! It doesn't matter if you met Africans who "don't claim" black Americans. The fact is that you and the American blacks that you hate so much are genetically tied. Think of us as brothers and sisters--I know that's a thought you love!
Finally, since it is clear that your education level flounders below the reading level necessary to read newspapers and medical *** I thought I would be gracious enough to help you understand something far beyond your comprehension level. Hypothetically, and I do mean HYPOTHETICALLY because we all know that you can't write or read, the AIDS situation in the Dominican Republic is hedging on becoming a pandemic. Which in simple terms you can understand is, "It bad. It so bad." I think you ought to worry about the AIDS situation in your country more so than the one in ours. God Bless you!
I can't wait till I have time to go watch the movie and I am not so sure about the colorism of the film being blatantly depicted to make the light skinned characters in the film appear to be SAINT LIKE and come to the rescue of the victim while the darker skinned characters happen to be the oppressors. We'll just call that coincidence! However I have noticed that the only time there is Oscar Buzz for a LIGHT SKINNED or DARK SKINNED BLACK actor/actress it is for the portrayal of a DARK VILLAIN.... What's up with that? 4u2.com
GO SEE THIS MOVIE! An absolutely moving and amazing film.
And mediatakeout do you think anyone cares about YOUR recommendation? You a website that promotes every mysoginist rapper and video ho as a star? PLEASE. Then you disparage this amazing black film. You all are TOXIC you really are. You want to race bait to promote your sad little site, fine, but stop trying to disparage a movie with depth when you turn around and promote the most gutter entertainers out there.
I normally wouldn't go so far as to actually comment on a "blog" site, but given the sensitive nature of this film, I felt I must. Being from the African American community and an incest survivor, I completely identify with what this character went through. You or whomever you had do the review, obviously did not read the book. So since they didn't do their job to adequately review the movie, I will do it for you. In the book "Precious" who so desperately wanted to be light skinned, associated the skin color as being good. The casting was deliberate!! The limited theatrical progressive release is not uncommon given that it was an independent film. I do believe "Slumdog Millionare" was released the same way as well! The each one teach one girls have all been getting major props for their performances. If you had actually been invited to a number of festival screenings or the premiere in NY or LA you would have known that as well. Which brings me to why you went on your "tyrant" of not recommending it to your readers. Could it be because you the founder of such a small insignificant site WASN'T invited, that prompted this review. Not to mention, when we as the African American Race, stop supporting black cinema, it affects how studios determine whether or not they are actually going to fund movies with African American Actors in it. So whether you like or dislike the producers, that *** be the determining factor of you seeing or encouraging others to see a movie. Now when the studios stop making black cinema all together, then we will have something to say about that too. Talk about "crabs in a barrel" syndrome. If you can't reach the top, you want to pull who is on top down to the bottom with you. BTW - Monique is far from Dark Skinned.
MTO u oughta be ashamed of yourselves for this bs right here 1st off mixed race ppl still rep the black community so y put them in a box when it comes to this movie, and so what about shades of skin color...was it 2 hard for u to watch a movie without start bringing up issues that have been holding us back as a ppl for so long? U have just degressed 100 yrs for this ***...get it 2gether MTO!!!
I loved the movie. I know crabs in the barrel just like Precious mom. There are men in this world just like Precious' dad. I was happy to see the movie with my daughter. The theme of the movie was love yourself. When you love yourself you will get an education, take care of your health, and work towards your future.

MTO *** the fock up you have a lot of nerve when you promote colorism and dehumanize blacks and make them look like clowns on this site. Or you always have to point out someons race in your post. MTO you take pleasure in the commenters going back in fourth with race wars or colorism look at what that idiot realroxanne post clear case of ignorance she needs to find a brain surgeon. If only we could get rid of low level people like that the world would b so much better.
I have to say that I kind sort of agree with MTO, because growing up as a dark akinned child it was very hard, because of the continuous teasing that I had to endure by my own race. Other races were more kind (especially white men) and more excepting of my color. I did have self-esteem issues as I got older, until my mother (God rest her soul) wrote me a poem called "chocolate cake" were she kindly explained to me how the most sought after sweet, delicious craving is for is "chocolate" it comfort, clams, soothes, and satisfication to those who desire it...
amandapanda every time I see your posts they are always neg.but I know why. your husband is black so naturally you hate the one thing YOU can never BE a woman of COLOR.I DID my thesis in sociology on this issue . LONG STORY *** EVERY WHITE GIRL I INTERVIEWED TOLD ME THAT HER FEAR WAS THAT their BLACK BOYFRIENDS WOULD LEAVE THEM FOR A BLACK WOMAN ..CAUSE THAT'S SOMETHING YOU COULD NEVER BE AND IF YOU WERE HE ...THE BROTHER... PROBABLY WOULDN'T WANT YOU...SO STOP ACTING BLACK before HE LEAVES you...becky SEATTLE IS AN INTERRACIAL FU%@ED UP CITY IF YOU DONT LIVE HERE MAYBE YOU AND OL BOY SHOULD

EVERY DARK SKINNED PERSON I KNOW WAS TEASED AS A CHILD ....I AM ALSO 1 SHADE DARKER THEN A PAPER BAG AS I CHILD I WAS TAUGHT TO HATE IT MISTREATMENT AT SCHOOL KIDS,TEACHERS CAN BE CRUEL. BUT MY MOM WHOM WAS VERY LIGHT MADE SURE WE LOVED THE SKIN WE WERE IN .THAT'S WHY SHE MARRIED MY DARK SKINNED FATHER AND THAT'S WHY I MARRIED MY TALL DARK AND HANDSOME HUSBAND...MELANIN IS A GIFT FROM THE MOST HIGH WE HAVE IT FOR A REASON...I STAY IN THE SUN TO KEEP IT NICE AND DARK!...HOTEP!
This ish written here does nothing but incite ignorance. As a black person, my story is MY STORY and only I can tell it. Unfortunately black people do get up to no good too but so does everyone else. A screenwriter would cast a movie based on the story they are trying to tell and who tells it best. And people need to leave Tyler Perry alone. I think he is a far better role model for young black men than half of these rappers we have nowadays. Why someone would choose to look up to someone like 50Cent rather than Tyler Perry boggles the mind.
To people suggesting that whoever wrote this post did not read the book Push by Sapphire... you are absolutely right and we must also remember that this is the reason why you can never class Mediatakeout under real journalism or news media... A blog of ignorant opinions it is and so shall it remain. You dont get educated on these sites it purely for entertainment... NO research, the writers are not well informed (and I am not refering to gossip) and not only do they choose to remain ignorant, they chose to promote it as well.
Colorism??? Who the hell wrote this article. This is the worst critism of a movie I've seen since A Beautiful Mind.. To think so biast should be a crime, if this were written on another blog site people would protest on the shear stupidity and ignorance spewed of this blog. Where is the editor in all this, coffee break is over... please erase this article. Can we please raise the pay scale to atract better quality writers instead of this college dropouts.
Tyler Perry is a smart mofo. If you think about it he purposely released this movie to theaters pratically in the four corners of the U.S. to stall boot legging of his movie. This way, he can capture at least 1 to 2 weeks of strong movie sales and cause a "word of mouth" buzz about the movie before it is released to other states. *** brilliant if you ask me. Get your money Tyler!
*** sorry I missed this one. I, for one am sick of color issues with us too. I will LOVE the day when BLACK FOLK will judge each other by the content of their character, NOT the color of their skin. Aint that a kick to the dome???? Its also interesting the number of posts that are telling people to basically get over it. Where are these people when certain bloggers have all day *** fests dogging dark skin people? Where is the defense? There is none, because its OK to dump *** on DS blacks. We survived being kidnapped, the Middle Passage, slavery, racism, terrorism, psychological terrorism, ONLY TO BE DONE BY EACH OTHER.
WE WE WE PERPETUATE THE STEREOTYPES IN REAL AND REEL LIFE.
Tyler Perrys movie, those kids getting *** on by their aunt. Its ok. They lil DS crack babies. When the 16 year old girl had attitude, I was surprised at how many in the theatre seemed to side with Tarajis character. Huh? If these had been 3 ababndoned LS crack babie with good hair, the AAAAAAwwwwwsssss would have been deafening and any act of unkindness by Taraji's character would NOT have been seen in the same light. YOU KNOW ITS TRUE.
I keep wondering if the film makers are geniuses that are holding up mirrors for us to see our stupidness, or if they are just continuing to beat this dead horse, sticking to the script. Dark bad. Light good. If the book was WRITTEN this way, to show Precious's state of mind, OK, cool. But if what I am hearing is true that the character portrayed by PP was a brown skin woman with locs, that is a TRAGEDY was made if the director CHOSE to not develop this character.
The director himself admitted to being prejudiced about DS blacks. This is from NYTimes magazine:
‘Precious’ is so not Obama,” Daniels said. “ ‘Precious’ is so not P.C. What I learned from doing the film is that even though I am black, I’m prejudiced. I’m prejudiced against people who are darker than me. When I was young, I went to a church where the lighter-skinned you were, the closer you sat to the altar. Anybody that’s heavy like Precious — I thought they were dirty and not very smart. Making this movie changed my heart. I’ll never look at a fat girl walking down the street the same way again.”
Notice he doesnt say he WAS prejudiced. He sat in front of who I'm assuming is a white reporter (don' know) and said this.
Think for a minute if Jennifer Hudson of Fantasia B had to audition for Puffr? Jay Z? Andre Harrell? Or any other black power player who can make or break a career? There would be back room talk about how white JH and FB are talented singers, they don't have THE LOOK.
People who endorse this mentality will never see a problem with it, because colorism is at the core of their being. Its like trying to untrain a cat from using a litter box. But don't question why ANYBODY with eyes that are in the game TO STAY, would have a problem after witnessing slight after slight after slight, and after repeateded slights, we finally QUESTION, then folks have the audacity to WONDER WHY. We've survived worse things, I just hope we can survive confused black people.
Speaking of confused

So sorry you're mother was a *** and that you're daddy went back to Europe to be with his European wife and European family. Too bad you are BOTH mother AND daughter, illiterate *** dispensers for tourists on *** junketts. THEY DON'T LOVE YOU HO. AHAHAHA You have my biggest sympathy that you are of such low intelligence that you have to slum your way over to a site filled with Black people because we are the only ones you feel superior to. And we give ammo all day to cretins like you. I know you don't know what a cretin is. As a matter of fact, you have no idea what I'm talking about. I'm wasting my time. Bye ho.
It's very OBVIOUS MTO did not read the book PUSH by Sapphire in which the movie was based off. In the book, the characters played by Mariah Carey, Paula Patton and Lenny Kravitz were either white, light bright or hispanic. The main characters like Precious, her mom and her dad were all dark skinned. The movie stayed true to the book. So before you criticize MTO, do some research and read the book. As for the movie only being released in select theaters, there were A LOT of people boycotting this movie so they had to introduce it slowly.
I think being raised to believe lighter is better or more beautiful you can't help the way you view color. Most of the time it's subconscious. For centuries, lighter skin has always been more accepted & even tho we act or do certain things that reflect that view we need to make a CONSCIOUS effort to cut out color/skin tone factors so that racism & prejudism amongst ourselves can die off. If we don't let ourselves self destruct, how will they?
@A_sez preach tell it like it is for these ignorant people. We can preach about this all day some people will get it but sadly for most it will go over their head and they will continue to have that slave mind set. There was a time in history when color was not a factor. Even though my western civ class was dull I did learn some good information.
The reason why the movie is only in a few theaters is because it's in it test market stage. Urban movies are so hard to push especially of serious subject matter. You can on push urban movies and certain theaters because blacks only frequent 25% of them (of the 3500 in the US we (black people) only frequent 800 to 1200). Pushing Precious in too many might cause it to lose like in the case of Hustle *** Flow and Crash (which cause the actors to not get paid). The reason for the color issues use to support how she view the value of black skin. Did you notice the pancake foundation on Monique
THANK YOU MTO!!!! I am so glad someone else noticed this. You hit the nail on the head with that. I thought the movie was GREAT but yes I thought it was sad that that color issue was so blantantly put in there. And please ignore these step and fetch it slaves. They are too busy wallowing in *** and foolishness to notice anything of substance
Who cares about whether they were dark skin blacks or light skin blacks as long as they were black people who were working, bringing home a paycheck..but more importantly were able to deliver the sole essence of what this movie was about.. Oh please MTO take your silly nonsense some where else..you always no how to start some some BS..I say all people should see the movie whether the actors are light or dark skin..see it because it's a great movie regardless of the skin color.

I’m really supposed to believe this Daniels had an epiphany to find the fattest, darkest BW and weave a tale of hardship just because he SAW a fattest, darkest black girl in church and used her to feed his inbred arrogance? Admit it, tom-tom -- you were PAID handsomely TO PUSH THIS IMAGE . LOL.
What’s more, am I to believe that Oprah and Tyler were so MOVED TO COMPASSION by the tale that they bankrolled the movie? Those two excel at good tom-bad tom. LOLOL. [Gender-bender] Tyler’s movies showcase beautiful blacks. Media moguls ain’t having it. Hence, “Precious,” the fattest, darkest “mammie” showcased to-date, bankrolled by a woman [Oprah] who, not so long ago, LOOKED like the movie’s star. Precious. LOLOLOL.
I got all kindsa numbers.
