Parents need to learn the difference between disciplining a youngster vs. a child who is an adult. I wanted to stay on campus but my parents said I would be in less debt after graduation if I lived at home while attending school. Contrary to what I have been accused of, I would never beat my children. Perhaps, I should have been a stronger disciplinarian as they were growing up. I never had. Unfortunately, they have taken me, and the privileged life I have given them, completely for granted.

Instead of being appreciative and realizing how fortunate they are, my children have an inflated sense of entitlement and expectation without having to work or earn their way.

However, my 'children' are no longer children, they are adults and I am trying to instill in them values and a work ethic of their own. My mother always told me "too many grown people can't live in one house" so I encourage them to have their own homes if they cannot abide by the rules of mine. I am not an uptight Dad, I am as hip as they come but I will not tolerate being taken advantage of or disrespected, especially in my home.

I've been working since the age of 14, I bought my first car by myself. Nobody gave me a car. My kids don't even remember their first car. I grew up with 6 of us in an apartment fighting over one bathroom. My kids have never had to share a bathroom, let alone a bedroom.

I'm asking everyone to let this one go... I'm only being a good parent. I'm a great father and everyone who knows me, knows this is true.

Maybe I'm being bias because of the line of work I'm in. There are so many women who are physically abused by father's, mom's boyfriend, or a sibling and too often as adults, they end up in physically abusive relationships. It sometimes feel as if it is of the cultural norm to be physically abused. I have a two year old daughter and her dad and my husband and I NEVER had to hit her to do anything. Taking away the things she loves the most is suffice. She respects us but she doesn't fear us. We didn't raise her to fear us. My dad didn't raise me to fear him but I respect him and honor him.

I'm not best friends with my parents. I'm 28. I don't hang out with my parents on the weekends drinking and smoking either. I never had a reason to fear my parents growing up. Hey Tastysis, I moved out of my parents home after I graduated from college. My dad encouraged his kids to stay home and attend college so that we wouldn't be in so much debt when we graduated. He also paid my car insurance for my 1988 Camry that had over 200,000 miles on it. But I had to get a job to pay for the remaining expenses that college life throws at you. Now the problem with some old school parenting skills that ive seen is the parents and children do not talk and cant ask certain questions. They grew up faster as adults (same as the ones now). What haven't I experienced? I had my son when I was 17, and I didn't start out the parent that I am now...I evolved! I went 2 college & took Intro to Psych! I was thought by a particular female Single professor (Dr. Harim ) the affects of corporal punishment on children.
