Thank you @Stash_Doll! I keep trying to tell some of these remedial students that being Black is not always synonymous to being African American!! Black is a color or Phenotype, which means is based on common features. That is why some African Americans, some Cubans,some Puerto Ricans, some Jamaicans, etc are classified as Black because of their shared features, BUT what distinguishes them from one another is their ETHNICITY! their cultural beliefs and origin. La-la is NOT African American, but she is a Black Puerto Rican.
Itstoomuch: You may "disagree", but you are disagreeing with fact, not opinion. Lala doesn't only have dark skin, she is of African ancestry. The only difference between La and me is that her ancestors ended up in Puerto Rico and mine in America. Puerto Ricans are apart of the African Diaspora as well. I have read an interview she clearly said that she was black by race and her ethnic group is Latino. Why don't some of you pick of a history book to find out that more blacks were enslaved in Latin American countries than the US or the UK. Here's the interview where she says it directly. Just as African Americans are very Americanized(we speak English, a lot of us are of the mainstream religion here, we eat foods we have adapted to etc) African Latinos have adapted a lot of the Latin culture. We have british, scottish, irish surnames and they have spainish surnames. Most of us have European ancestry and so do most of them. The difference between black americans and black latinos is that our ancestors ended upin different places.

Since a lot of you have an issue with the definition of Latino/a and Hispanic (*cringes at that term*) I think it's best you just call her Puerto Rican...which is what she is.
