A marriage license is nothing more than a contemporary vestige from slavery whereby the slaves had to get permission from "massa" to copulate, and procreate...only now "massa" is the state in which you reside in. My parents were married for 21 years & my husbands parents have been married just as long. I've only been married for 4 years but that says a lot because most marriages end before 5! This is not the June Cleaver days of the 1950's, or even the Florida Evans days of the 1970's for that matter. Women should not have to feel obligated or pressured to get married just because society expects them to.
Nowadays women just as much as men have the choice of whether or not marriage is something they want to go through with. And I don't feel that women should be thrown under the bus just because they don't want to be married. I won't go as far as to say marriage ain't a big deal, because it is. However, at the same time, it's not for everyone.

My husband & I had great examples of what marriage should be like so we were excited to get married & r still happily married 4 years later. Yes I do consider my wedding ring to be a badge of honor esp. in a time when ppl consider marriage to b a dead institution. For thousands of years marriage was more of a business arangment than a union of two people in love. Many different cultures it was about estates and property.
Also, whats better...two(or more) happy people in a loving productive relationship or two married folks who cant stand each other and wind up cheating or hating each other until they finally divorce?
Me and my childrens mother were together 12 years without a ring, and now although we are no longer romantic, we are great friends who are doing our best to raise two healthy, sane and happy boys.

EXAMPLE: The way to judge somethings value is to take it to it's extreme and see if it's sustainable. If all marriage was eliminated tomorrow, the societies of this world would be in a sea of complete kaos like how the black community is heading.
If everyone got married tomorrow, there would be much more order and structure than our societies currently have.
