: MediaTakeOut.com just got word that Soul Train founder Don Cornelius committed SUICIDE last night. According to police, he shot himself once in the head.
It's not clear what happened, but Don had just gotten out of a bad marriage, with a much younger woman.
TMZ has more info. Here's what they say:

Suicide is selfish! I love and respect him for his contributions as a entertainment Pioneer and possibly the reason most of us have been created. It is a very sad day for all even if this is the first time you heard his name for young people just learning his name because of the news. The word "Dome" is harsh. But he took his gift selfish unforgiving sin that exist! If his he'll began with the slander of his death. He chose that route. May God have mercy on him. Only he can judge. But we must ride this life out no matter whatever your past has been. It is is not up to you to decide what your path and obstacles really are on judgment day.
Just how I feel about this new news to me at the moment.
Don was born here in Chicago in 1938 and this is where it all started a lot of people didn't even know that. I often wished he would have continued the show here, because it would have been a Big Success and I often imagined myself on the show watching as a little kid "gettin down to the greatest hits and latest dances" (As they use to say), but I understand that he had to take the show to L.A where all the stars were and the sun was always shining so that's what he did and it was still a great success. This life is a rough life for us all and an uncertain existence with critical times that are hard to deal with and some people don't cope well with aging, having illness or with troubled matters of the heart. While it is very disturbing he chose to go out like that I am also glad he didn't take anyone else along with him. I show homage to the Man Don Cornelius by imitating how he ended his iconic Soul Train dance show week after week for the many years that he hosted, by raising the famous Unity Fist and saying on your R.I.P journey brother Don I wish you LOVE,PEACE and SOOOULL!!

Wow I was watching Fox 11 News when the breaking news came in that there was one gunshot that was heard coming from his home and the police were there but had to leave for work so I literally just found out that he committed suicide. That's crazy but I guess we don't know how debilitating his health was where he decided that he was tired and ready to leave this earth. So sad :-( RIP DON CORNELIUS Soooooooooul Train.
He will be soooo missed ..i grew up on Soultrain...it had Saturdays at our home crackin'...this was our Saturday ritual...turn on Soultrain and do the dances that they were doing!!!!! i learned every dance i know from Soultrain. I remember seeing him walking around lost & upset going off,when I attended the last Soul Train Awards that he was handling here in La a few years ago. News reports are saying an "apparent" suicide and the matter is being investigated. So I'm going to hold out until the investigation is complete. I've seen lots of cases where it 'appeared' to be suicide, yet the cops find things like the deceased shoes were on the wrong feet or clothes on wrong....so I'm just not ready to believe it. Not saying its not possible, just not ready to believe this.

Don's breakup with Viktoria Chapman Cornelius was brutal. He was convicted of domestic abuse and, according to him, she pepper sprayed him multiple times.
During the divorce in 2009, Don said in legal docs obtained by TMZ, 'I am 72 years old. I have significant health issues. I want to finalize this divorce before I die."
The divorce was indeed finalized later that year, but there's a provision in the settlement agreement that says Don must make Viktoria the beneficiary of both of his life insurance policies -- totaling around $300,000 in benefits.
Under California law, if a policyholder commits suicide within 2 years of the time the policy is issued, the company can deny payment. But Don had the policy for more than 2 years, so Viktoria -- the woman he despised -- will get the loot.

It could be possible that he was in great pain & wanted to end it. It could be possible that he was in pain and wanted to end it and he had a slight dementia episode where he forgot about the time frame & was focusing more on his dislike of her & what he could do to keep her from getting the money. Since he left no note & his son was kinda vague (rightfully so) about their last conversation, we'll never really know.
