A woman died from a massive allergic reaction that could have been caused by the glue in her hair extensions, a pathologist said yesterday.Atasha Graham, 34, who had used hair extensions for 14 years, collapsed after clubbing until the early hours.
Home Office pathologist Michael Heath told the inquest into her death that the latex glue used to apply her extensions – or the solvent for removing old ones – may have been to blame.
He added: ‘I’ve seen cases where people using solvent to apply extensions has actually caused anaphylactic shock.
‘There are about ten to 20 deaths a year in this country, many more in America. I have seen four in the last three months.’
Dr Heath told the hearing at Southwark Coroner’s Court in London: ‘The hair extensions in Atasha’s hair were of a latex type. This may or may not be related [to her death]. If it is the hair extension, normally a reaction would occur within half an hour of applying them.’
But he added that traces of glue or solvent could have seeped into her bloodstream hours later after she started perspiring on the dancefloor.
Sad but not sad. Have some pride, keep it natural! Those chemicals, weaves and other things black women put in their hair are highly toxic. why subject yourself to that in order to please someone else? If you do it for a man, than that man is def not worth your time if he can't love the natural way the creator has made you. I have mad respect for black women who keep it natural! Beautiful
Same thing happened to one of my friends. Her hair stylist was lucky enough to notice the signs and call an ambulance. My friend stayed in the hospital for 3 days; throat closed up and everything!!!! Please be careful with these weaves. If you are going to wear a weave, test the products on your head first!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SAD.
@Travis J I really doubt that women wear weave to impress black men...I have never met a black man that prefers weave over natural hair. So you can't blame black men this time lol.
And if a woman wants to throw a weave in her hair, that doesn't mean she hates her natural hair. Maybe she just wants to change it up a little. What's wrong with that?

I am a Londoner (UK), as was the lady at heart of this story. This story went out in the UK press yesterday. The actual tragedy occured last year in March 2011. No one dropped dead on a dancefloor. Such *** journalists that work for MTO, that prey on shock-factor stories and manipulate them completely for their benefit to grab our attention is despicable. I'm sorry that society has MANY of my sistahs thinking they MUST wear weave in order to be beautiful! I have worn weave in the past, but as someone said it was because I didn't want to continuosly heat or burn out my OWN hair, or sometimes I wanted a new look without cutting on changing my hair.
But lets be HONEST... Weaves & Wigs were worn by Old White Politicians 100s of years ago... And MANY White Men still wear Comb overs til this day... So that allergic reaction could've happened to anyone.

It is nothing with wigs or weaves if you wear them properly. You should take time and put them on properly and comb them and make sure they fit your face. Black women are some jealous ***. I really get sick of other black women convincing other black women with what they should do with hair, it's ridiculous, not all women will rock their natural hair, some like weaves, relaxers, straight, etc. Why are black women dividing themselves over hair texture? I'm a natural, I'm a weave head, I'm relaxed, look at it, doesn't make sense right? Even over hair there is division which shows me that some still don't have the sense to move on and stop the division. I am going to rock my natural hair, because I just want to. My personal choice, i have never convinced anyone else to do it, I mean why would I? I don't even wear weaves really, but I like it if it is nice and all. Black women need to do them ad stop worrying about the next black woman and stop trying to enforce what they want to do on others, it's annoying. It's sickening to hear how some blacks think, men like good looking women, relaxed hair, weaves and wigs, natural curly/kinky/nappy hair, if you look good you can get whoever you want, I know I can. Having natural hair doesn't mean you look good, I have seen plenty of unattractive women with that texture and plenty of attractive women with wigs, weave, and relaxed hair. Stop hating, look good and do you, I don't knock what another woman wants to do.
