This could happen here in the states as well. I live in Louisiana and a family went in their back yard and found a wild panther which the police came and killed it. He might have walked up on it not knowing it was there. That happened to a guy that I work with but he saw it in time and him and the panther ran in different directions. The bad thing about big cats, bears, alligators and crocodiles is that they're either going to run from you or be ready to eat you.
