: As we all know, more often than not, we tend to see some of the most attractive females with below looking average to ugly guys (Beyonce and Jay-Z). It's very rare (especially in Hollywood) that we see a good looking male with a below average looking female (T.I. and Tiny) but why is this?
Why is that? Is possible that females are not as superficial as males are? Is more emphasis put on a female's beauty than a male's? Do women tend to look at personality more than a male does? What is it? Do women see status and power as compensation for a guy's a looks? Do ugly guys have to work more on their charisma and swagger?
Well in my opinion, I don't think superficiality is exclusive to one gender although the fact is society tends to put more emphasis on a female's beauty than a male's. An average female in western society will grow up being inundated with images of flawless looking women, stunning princess' in fairytale animations who get swept off of their feet from prince charming. Coco cola shape bottled barbie dolls to play with. The average male is more concerned with sports/games/music etc. at that age more than how they look. Being competitive, being #1 and winning is what we tend to be indoctrinated with, while the pretty cheerleaders spur them on.
Although this thesis may have been more applicable in the 20th century it is still relevant now. With 'feminism' (I use that term loosely) and '***' now penetrating and dictating society's standards of beauty today more than ever, we now have those 'minority' of women who believe dressing *** and not wearing make up is somehow a big 'F-U' to the vacuous of what 'beauty' should be. They more often than not tend to be dykes.
However, the fact remains that men have always been seen as the hunter/gatherer while the woman as the mother/family carer etc. It is always instinctive for a woman to look for security in a man over looks. Masculinity is not synonymous with 'pretty' while 'femininity' is. Men with status and power to a woman's eyes is what beauty is to a man's eyes. This isn't the case for all people but it tends to be more often than not. This is why you'll see a pretty female with an ugly male many times. You see, alot of ugly males have to compensate for their disadvantaged looks by working more on their charisma and competitive spirit. And we as men are taught to believe that having the 'trophy wife' compliments our success while many women were told (and I'm speaking prior to the 50's) marrying a successful man should be their ambition.

Nope. Your reading too much into the superficial subject. What someone sees as a "pretty female" and "ugly male" is perception. That "pretty female" may see the "ugly male" as georgeous and the "ugly male" may see the "pretty male" as average but great personality.
What we are seeing how someone on tghe outside perceives how two people feel about each other. So it has nothing to do with pretty vs ugly or or (physical beauty) opposites attract.

I agree that physical appearance is emphasized that much more in women.I think that superficiality PERIOD is an integral part of out society but I think it's expression tends to each gender in different ways.You noted how female children's toys might dictate their aspirations in life.It certainly does.Toys designated for females cater to the mindset that evinces dependence.Things like princess dolls,make-up mirrors,etc.They all consider the impression males will hold of them.It doesn't really acknowledge and nurture individuality in girls. Boy toys,on the other hand,don't emphasize the consideration of females.Rather it relies on deeds of an internal nature as a means of fulfillment within him.It lends them an interest in things that can be achieved independently.
