METAIRIE - The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office has arrested a Metairie man accused of shooting and robbing another man he'd arranged to meet through a dating service.

The victim, a 23-year-old Metairie man who was dressed as a woman at the time, was shot eight times in the face, chest, back, buttocks and thigh, according to a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office incident reports. He was taken to the LSU Interim Public Hospital in New Orleans where he was in stable condition.

Investigators arrested Walter Conley, 21, of 517 Elise Drive, Metairie, on Monday and booked him with attempted second-degree murder and armed robbery, a Sheriff's Office arrest report said.

The incident occurred on the night of Jan. 15. The victim told authorities he'd made arrangements to meet with an unknown man through a dating service. The two met in the parking lot of a grocery store in the 5900 block of Airline Drive in Metairie about 10:50 p.m., the incident report said.

The victim was wearing woman's clothing and a wig, according to the reports. The man got into the victim's car, and the pair drove about a half-block from the store when the he pulled out a gun and demanded the victim's purse, money and wireless telephone, the report said.

The victim got out of the car and tried to run, but the man opened fire, hitting him several times. The robber then got out of the car and fired several more shots at the victim until he fell to the ground. The man then drove off in the victim's car, a 2005 Suzuki Forenza, the arrest reports said.

The victim knocked on the door of a nearby home for help, but got no answer and tried to return to the grocery store. He collapsed near the parking lot where a passerby found him and called for help, the report said.

It's unclear how detectives identified Conley as the suspect in the case, but a warrant for his arrest was issued Friday. He was taken to the Sheriff's Office investigations bureau in Harvey where he gave a statement admitting to the shooting and the robbery, the arrest report said.
